Game Recap: Mets 4, Phillies 3 (11 innings)

Result: The Mets won, 4-3, in 11 innings over the Phillies – the third straight extra inning game between the two teams – on a Lucas Duda two-run home run in the top of 11th in Philadelphia.

Need to Know: Duda supplied some much-needed power with a long home run to center field at Citizens Bank Park scoring  Travis d’Arnaud to break a 2-2 tie off of Philippe Aumont. In the bottom of the 11th, Phillies’ Marlon Byrd homered off Mets’ Jenrry Mejia, but Mejia got Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard to pop-up to end the game. The Mets and Phillies played three straight extra inning games with the Phillies winning in 14 on Friday, the Mets in 14 on Saturday and then again in 11. Jon Niese was strong in eight innings of work scattering eight hits and striking out six in the no-decision for the Mets. Duda wasn’t in the starting lineup and came in the game as part of a double-switch in the 10th.

Game Ball: Josh Edgin blew away the Phillies out of the pen in the 10th with three strikeouts to pick up the win. The bullpen in general has been stellar the last two games.

What’s Next: The Mets and Phillies will complete their marathon of a five-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Bartolo Colon goes for the Mets against Roberto Hernandez for the Phillies.

The last two wins have been impressive but we must temper this optimism with the fact that we are playing a team that is arguably worse than we are. Hell, Daniel Murphy could serve as their base-running coach. And much as it pains me you have to applaud TC's moves these past two days--especially given what he's had to work with. Was worth sitting-through four hours of lousy baseball just to see the look on Hamels' face.

I was at the game yesterday and could not believe Niese was taken out after a quick 1-2-3 eight inning and only 91 pitches. We won the game and our bullpen looked good besides the hiccup to Byrd, but with it being uber-depleted, why not ride Niese's performance?

Duda CRUSHED that ball!

Love to see Duda continue with the pop off his bat. Degrom, Montero has to keep those pitches away from the home run hitters in any teams lineup! I like the idea of Montero in the bullpen he resembles somewhat of like a Mejia type pitcher. A 2 innings tops kinda guy, were he could find a home with his great poise for a young pitcher. I was a big fan of Marlyn Byrd, John Buck, but you never know maybe we could resign one of them in our near future. Probably more Byrd, seeing Plawecki most diff ineptly will be up soon. Like Recker a lot like a relief catcher in late innings for Plawecki. Not sold on d'naurd! With his trade record so far maybe we could get that all-star type shortstop we could use with Flores as backup and Tejada a late inning sub once in a while off the bench. A 3 shortstop rotation with the lessor 2 getting some short innings late in the game might help the position!! Let's Go Met's!!

Nice to see the changes made are bringing results. We still need that big bat in the line-up . It would be nice to get it before the ASG. Funny how getting rid of some non contributers can spark a club of young kids. Keep up the good work guys, still have some house cleaning to do though.

God Bless you all!

Have to give kudos to TC on a well-managed weekend.  Extras 3 days in a row and he squeezed the juice out of a bullpen running on fumes. Bravo - and I can't believe I just said that.

Degrom looks sensational.  trade him?

no no no.

Happy for the win. But man Sandy Alderson is a true moron. Nelson Cruz, who Sandy could have had is hitting 315, w/ 20 HR. Think what that would do for our lineup, if swapped out for CY. Lol.

Wow! what a wknd. Imagine if we win tom, what a road trip it'll be. Niese should start being in the conversation of being the starting pitcher in the ASG. The bullpen aside from the blip by Mejia has been outta this world. I believe they will keep it up. I love the way this team is playing. They got real heart in the way they play. I'm holding my breath on L Lag tho. He's been soo valuable. I'm hoping just a 2 week stint on the dl. We can manage that by mixing and matching in the OF, now that Abreu is looking Moises for us. Keep it up Metsies.

I have joined the chorus of being disgusted with the Mets. But I have to admit that I was pleased when the hitting coach was let go. And honestly I never dreamed that we would have this kind of pitching staff with such powerful and young relief pitching. Also quite honestly I never dreamed that after 56 games we would be 27 and 29. I thought things would be much worse. So for the pitching I feel it proper to give a well done to Sandy Alderson.

What is the record for the most innings played in a single regular season series between two teams?  This has got to be a contender.

Have to wonder what might have been if SA had resigned Byrd and Hawkins for relative pennies, compared to the monies he squandered on Granderson, Colon and C. Young--a trifecta of expensive FA signings that for the most part has been a huge failure!

Despite all the bs this year, they could still make playoffs with NL not strong this year.  Need to make a move soon though or strong pitching will be overwhelmed by bad lineup.  How about this one: Murphy, E. Young, and DeGrom for Kemp, D. Gordon?

Dodgers could put Murph at 3rd, EY as 4th outfielder, shed salary, and solve crowded outfield.  They have big $ committed to rookie 2nd baseman coming up.  Mets put Gordon at short to bat leadoff, Flores to 2nd, Kemp to left.  Lineup = Gordon, Granderson, Wright, Kemp, Duda, Lagares, Flores, d'Arnaud.  But will Wilpons pony up?

With all of the extra innings played over the past three games it is nice to see the Mets come out of it with 2 wins.  There is nothing more frustrating than to go extra innings and then lose.  I'd love to see the Mets win tomorrow and take 4 of 5 from the Phillies.

Once again, our starting pitching brings it. The only thing keeping the team's head close to above water.

They do this every year......win for a couple weeks, lose for a couple weeks. They get our hopes up, and shoot our hopes down. If history repeats itself, they'll play decent until the allstar break, then go "0" for August.

game ball should be to niese, he is the only reason we could have our bullpen pitch

I just hope that when Gee comes back they trade Montro plus others for a big bat, this team could win the div........just think if they had signed Bird and Cruz rather than Young and Granderson where they would be now

It will be quite interesting this off season to see which starters Sandy tries to move for a big bat. Niese looks great but he may be the odd man out if the Mets are really trying to improve their offense. He will have solid trade value and you have to give up something to get something, plus besides Colon, he's one of the more expensive starters which with the Wilpon's in charge we all know how important money is. I expect Colon will be traded by the deadline for several prospects.

Duda is quietly putting up a decent season, if he can just catch fire for a week or two I think he will become more confident and a much more consistent presence.

It's hilarious how much the post game comments keep decreasing the more the Mets win. I don't know what these people are gonna do with their time once the Mets start winning all the time. I kinda feel sorry for them cause it's gotta be really tough living in a misery of negativity

@AJRodriguezMD The mistakes and blunders by Terry were too numerous to list. Including running out exhausted players.

Kenneth Meltsner

@Max Denby I agree. Even if the guy was only HALF as productive his numbers would still dwarf those of Chris Young. One more bat and a bullpen minus Valverde and Farnsworth and the team is challenging for first-place.

@Max Denby

and you thinl he would do the same things in New York and the NL east , as in Baltimore and the AL East? btw in you calculation you have also 28 other morons as GM's then nobody was wailling to give hom his demands until he was desparate and settled for the 1y contact

Colon was not squandered and those were not expensive signings. Expensive for us maybe, not compared to what the best players on the market got in terms of years or dollars.

@04doctored14 There would be no Vick Black without Byrd trade. And the Mets received an undisclosed amount in cash for that trade. And Grandy was a big factor in the 2 wins against the Yanks.

hojostraw

@04doctored14 Colon has had 3 BRUTAL starts. But his other 7 have been quality starts. his overall stats look bad, and his out of shape body and complete ineptitude at the plate bother fans. But I'll happily take 70% quality starts.

@donw If you believe that Kemp can somehow get healthy, it's a no brainer and would be a steal for the Mets.  But Kemp is such a huge question mark, with a huge contract....it would be a big gamble.

cmetsfan

@donw No interest in moving degrom. No interest in moving Line drive hitting Murphy out of cavernous Citi feild.

Aside from Kemp almost beating up Mattingly today, any power hitter is gonna be a gamble at Citi so if it's another guy unwilling to use the whole field, that wouldn't be pretty if he struggled.

Are you a Dodgers fan? Makes no sense for the Mets. Makes us a poorer team actually.

@donw Making D. Gordon part of the deal forces Magic's hand into having to re-sign HanRam for big money.  Dodgers have leverage over HanRam with D. Gordon (a natural SS).  I think they wouldn't MIND having HanRam, but will definitely go into 2015 with Gordon and Guerrero.

@donw I think Murphy has to go to the AL to DH.  But I think it will be in a package with Montero.

This is baseball - full of streaks through all 162 games. Get used to it. The better teams make the good streaks last longer than the bad ones

@hrvwlzthor I wish people like you would stop worrying about others that are supposedly "negative" in your eyes and ALWAYS bringing it up - well I guess the Wright haters aren't out in force today, oh I guess the haters aren't posting tonight et al.....  It's a free blog open to all comers - negative and positive.  It would be a boring comment section if everyone agreed on everything.

Whats the point of coming on a blog and saying "yay we won" most people just want an avenue to display their dismay with things. And mets arent 20 games over .500 by the way

@jenkins He dosn't hit for power. We need him at citi, to hit line drives. No power hitters a given in Queens until somebody proves it over the 81 home games.

@Jaime @Nick Congello Ike had trade value duda had none. In a few days we will find out who is the "player to be named later' in the Ike trade and it could be a good one.  So outside of signing a quality FA this is not just duda over ike.

My point is why are their 500 comments after a loss but 80 after a win. Ur telling me that's there's nothing positive to talk about without being rara after they've just won 6 of 8 and the fact that their BP looks lights out since Mejia was put in there. In the last 23 innings the BP has given up 3 ER, just to compare the Yankees BP today in the 9th inning gave up 6 ER. So ur saying there's nothing positive to talk about? Off course there is but you choose not to talk about it cause just like the media, talk radio, etc., winning and positivity is boring losing and turmoil and negativity is sadly not boring and gets ratings. We've come to the point where a fan can't even say he's happy that his team won because he/she is afraid that they will get ridiculed on social media, how sad.

@Wayno I agree, I like when the mets win but I don't feel compelled  to brag about winning.
