Recap: Giants 6 – Mets 4

The Giants knocked off the Mets 6-4 on Sunday at AT&T Park to sweep their three-game series.

Need to Know:  The Mets dropped their sixth straight game to the Giants as Zack Wheeler (2-6) took the loss. The Mets, who sat David Wright out of the lineup, got three hits from Daniel Murphy and three hits and two home runs from Curtis Granderson. The rest of the Mets lineup managed only three hits and was 3 of 26 in the loss. Tim Lincecum picked up the win for the Giants to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Mets, trailing 5-3 in the eighth, pushed across a run when Daniel Murphy scored on a wild pitch and Granderson moving up to third. Chris Young popped out to end the inning with Granderson, the tying run, on third. San Francisco tacked on a run in its half of the eighth in a Brandon Hicks RBI single off Mets reliever Vic Black. In the ninth, the  Lucas Duda walked to lead  off the inning, but Sergio Romo came on in relief and got the final three outs for his 20th save for the Giants.   Wheeler had an odd game, he lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed six hits, two walks and four runs but struck out six. His ERA is now 4.19.

Game ball: Granderson gets it with 10 total bases, two home runs and a double as he flashed the kind of power the Mets are paying him for.

It's becoming more difficult to sit and watch this team play - though it was nice to finally see Granderson do something.  Even if they are not playing well, I enjoy listening to the announcers - but on Saturday even they were not up to par.  Bases loaded with one out and a fly ball is hit to right that eventually bounces off the wall.  Chris Young is runner on third and he goes two thirds of the way down the line before retreating to tag the bag in event ball is caught.  There is absolutely NO REASON he should have ever left the bag!  That is something kids are taught in Little League and through high school!  I'm not sure what is more amazing - that the announcers muffed up who was responsible for runner eventually being thrown out as there were two occupying same bag, or that there can be professional players making over $7 million for the season who can't hit, field and have basic lack of understanding of simple fundamentals taught to all kids!

Chris Young popped out to end the inning. How many times have we heard that this year?

Collins managed his worst game of the year.  He is beginning to panic. Met's have no fire. They are spoiled little girls without heart or talent.

They will be able to fire Terry next month when they move people and get the Payroll in the 65 million dollar range.

Guys don't you get it yet. Sandy is not going anywhere he was given to the mets my Bud Selig as a smokescreen. His job was to cut the payroll to help the Wilpons keep the team. Bud is the only reason the Wilpons still have this team. They are buddies!!!!! Terry isn't going anywhere because they try to save a nickel if they can and so they wont pay the money to bring someone in and still pay Terry. Our best hope is once Bud retires and the new commish looks at the books and realize the wilpons cant afford a team in NY.

Flores, the Mets last win, Monday Flores 3 hits, GS, 6 RBI's. Tuesday bangs a double off the wall with a Man On. He never starts again, we never win again. Saturday Night he BLAMES Tejada for running them out of a big inning they lose their 5th in a row by 1 run. Who starts Sunday who starts and does nothing, Tejada.

I believe this demonstrates vividly what I already knew, Terry is an idiot, period.

I don't get it there getting men on base getting them to 3rd with less than 2out but not getting them in if they were they would be a above 500 team right now. I give the blame to terry Collins he's just a plain old manager. He dosent have any creativity like maybe tinkering the lineup lets say put abreu lead of then murph wright grandy duda due decker decker tejada or Flores. And maybe also if there's a runner on 3rd 1 out and Chris Youngs at the plate he's struggling. You put a squeeze bunt on get him that RBI get in that run from third it's that easy. You have to tell the players you don't need a base hit al u need is a slow grounder or a bunt. Anyone can do it. I think Wally backman would replace him beautifully. Look at the team he's managing in triple a there 14 games above 500. I think Wally knows how to be a creative manger and at the same time instill a winning culture in the mets dugout. I'm sick of terry Collins already were supposed to be a 500 team this year and were 6 games below now. Terry Collinss never took us anywhere I'm sure Wally Blackman would change the culture and make a winning atmosphere in New York

This team is ...a nitemare....if we go into next year the same as this.. I hope Sandy will take some responsibility for this. We are 253 wins  297 losses under the great Alderson era this is his 4th year as GM.

Here's my question; everyone on here say no one else wanted Chris Young or Granderson and we were fools to bid against ourselves. But Backman's been available for a long time and no other team wants him. So my question is, why not? Shouldn't that be as much of a red flag as our signing the other two?

The June Swoon has cometh.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THEY HONESTLY ARENT THIS BAD. THERE BAD BUT MAKES AWFUL MOVES. AFRAID TO PUSH HIS PITCHERS. IM DONE WITH THIS TEAM UNTIL WE HAVE A REAL MGR AND GM.

FIRE COLLINS AND SANDY ASAP!!!!!!!!!

At the very least, CUT CHRIS YOUNG! He does nothing to help the team, matter and fact he hurts the team. Money is already spent, so just cut him already. That's the least they can do!

The best chance for Wally to ever manage the Mets would be if the Mets go on full implode and lose a lot of games at a ridiculous rate.  Only then could I see the Wilpons giving Backman the managing job in an effort to stem the losing and bring back the fans.

Even at that, I think they'd only give him the interim tag for the remainder of the season.  But this would be Wally's best and probably only hope of ever managing the Mets.  I don't see any other scenario where he'd be hired.  And if he seizes the opportunity and turns the team around, at that point the Wilpons and Sandy would have to bring him back in 2015.

So for those that are fans of Wally and want him managing, I think you have to hope the Mets keep on losing so that they are forced to fire Terry during the season, opening the door to Wally.

Can we have another 3am west coast managerial firing.  Throw in the GM as well too.

When people say "Terry Collins, he's a great manager", I say to myself "where can one find the drug that would make one so delusional."

Hey the Mets in the past years have started off competitively and then tanked, so maybe this year they've stunk from the start and will finish strong? One can hope

Why did Willie Randolph have such a short leash yet nothing is Terry Collins' fault, He has a Fking kite string.

I predict they will have a new manager by week's end.

But whoever it is they'd better bring about 18 players with them. Otherwise this team will continue to be a disaster and the people on here will not know what to do..

And not sure if this point has been raised, but hey, what about Keith's comments?  It got a little much as he repeated it so much over the weekend, but he really gave it to the management regarding how in SF, they don't play all that music and throw out all the bells and whistles.  The fans can focus on the game, nice and quiet, except the fans. He even said that they are all rooting without the need to be prompted.  I could sense some tension between him and management - hey, we also had Alderson's buddy former hitting coach Hutchens' comments about the announcers, particularly Keith, who wasn't singled out by name.  And when Keith gets home, will somebody get in his ear about this?  In some ways, I wonder if he's getting fed up with them and/or the other way around.  Of course, his Mets legendary status is secure with the fans and probably even still with Jeff Wilpon, who I think values and idolizes the '86 Mets.  From what we hear, Alderson and Co. are less endeared (as Mookie says, at least, if I'm remembering right) and this might add fuel to the fire.  I don't like all the music at Citi either.  Would rather concentrate on baseball.

Justin Turner over David Wright. This blog has many foolish comments. That takes the cake.

@theglider  I guess, but he's also had issues in his past which I believe has scared other teams off.  I don't know that it has so much to do with his ability as a manager.

wingo43

No, actually they are that bad. We have an inexperienced bullpen which is in constant flux with no closer and we have 5 hitters who are hitting right near the Mendoza line if not under it.

We suck.

It's hard for me to blame TC.  I fault the Wilpons the most and Sandy second.

Rimo Chaloney

I don't see any other way Sandy or the Wilpons would hire Wally to manage the Mets.  It can only happen mid-season during an epic meltdown of a season in my humble opinion

@StayTrueOrangeNBlue I wouldn't say he was a "great manager," but (1) the team has not quit on him; and (2) the roster stinks.  Can't make chicken salad out of chicken dung.

@StayTrueOrangeNBlue because Willie was brought in to win, he had a team

Collins was brought in to babysit, you can change the manager but you won't change the record.

@cver I think Hernandez was offered an opportunity to be on the field and he said no. He therefore should shut up, or put up.

@cver He's right; I've been screaming about that for years.  I HATE sitting in my seat at Citifield because it's annoying as hell.  It's like being at a table with someone tapping their foot for three hours or listing to a never ending car commercial.

The only peace you get is when the players are in action.

@cver I loved that Keith was all over the "people are here for baseball not the circus" stuff.  I like Citifield a lot but HATE the constant bombardment of music and sound samples being blasted at me and all.  I especially LOATHE the piped in cheering which actually keeps me from going to games more than the thought of dropping a couple a of hundred dollars to watch the Mets lose.

I have also noticed that Darling has been criticizing collins, the coaches and managements approach to nearly everything.  I thought maybe this break from broadcasting for Darling was because they are pissed at him.

@strake  D Wright gets a bad rap. The guy is never in trouble and always does and says the right thing and is loyal. Look at his numbers when they played in a normal size park and he had guys around him in the line up. I think he is trying to do too much and it doesn't help they built a park that took his power to right center away. Oh and Citi has killed other batters with a lot more power then him. Its not excuses its reality. All that said he is still on pace to get 3000 hits and 400 home runs so no uhhhh I don't want turner lol

On what planet does any rational minded adult think another person would take pleasure from having a sample of some no-talent hack ordering you to clap and then a cheesy 80's drum machine being smacked on relentlessly blasted into their ears at airline level decibels?

Met games are the world's worst bar mitzvah.

Eat me..go get back to beating your wife or something.

Has there been ANY MET manager since Hodges (who didn't live long enough) who wasn't reviled by fans? Even Davey Johnson was run out of town. Everybody here hated on Willie until he was gone. ..and your telling me Willie would be doing any better with this lineup?

Dumbass fans being dumbass fans again.

@rico Know what really bugs me like mad about the Mets. That perpetually smiling college-aged twosome (the blonde and the big guy) that hawks t shirts, special events, etc) during Mets games, and also "hosts" dumb stuff like trivia quizzes at Citi Field. Ugh....notice the constantly smiling duo never mentions wins? Or ballplayers. That's because the Mets know they stink on ice, and are trying to sell fans the sizzle and not the steak - kids run the bases, post-game concerts, etc. But they never mention "pennant race" or "big wins," do they.

The Mets organization seems to only want a full stadium full of Forest Gumps, ooohing and ahhing and "wow, look at all the pretty colors!" Contrast that to San Francisco, where fans "ooohh and ahhh" EVERY PLAY. Not at Citi; the fans are too busy standing in a line for a Shake Shack.

Fellow serious baseball fans: we're doomed...as long as we're Mets fans.

sorry state of affairs ... when the mets lose theglider

says a lot

i dont think he's gone by week's end

if this team is 12-13 games under by July.... the hot seat is nuclear

there's just no margin of error with this offense -- if the pitchers are not perfect and/or if the manager is not perfect (and he's far from it) -- they have a 75% chance of losing

more than 50 games this year.. they've scored 5 runs or less ....

@oldrockingguy @theglider The Mets is like a Government that the people hate, and the dictator is a pain in the a$$ but no one can over throw them because Alderson is on shurms and thinks this is winning
