Daniel Murphy 1 (Baron)

Recap: Daniel Murphy’s Q&A on Twitter

Daniel Murphy answered fan-submitted questions through the team’s Twitter account on Wednesday, and now we know:

He loves playing in New York because of the atmosphere… Tony Gwynn was his favorite player growing up… He likes playing for Terry Collins, who he says is passionate and energetic… The only other job he’s ever had is cutting lawns… He listens to Mercy Me and eats peanut butter with honey before every game… Ike Davis is eccentric and one of the funniest guys on the team… He watches Homeland, How I Met Your Mother, he’s hooked on Hunger Games and enjoys the Lord of the Rings… “The Dude,” for Lucas Duda, is the best nickname on the team.

The Mets have been reportedly listening to offers for Murphy, but their asking price is “substantial,” according to people who have checked in on him (Rubin, Dec. 11).

Earlier this week, Murphy told reporters he expects to be on the Mets next season, which is exactly where he wants to be.

“I want to be in New York,” Murphy said (Rubin, Dec. 17). “We’ve struggled the last couple of years, and I also feel like hopefully my best baseball is ahead of me. … I think I’ll be here. … I want to be here. I think this organization is headed in the right direction, and I really want to be a part of it.”

Murph! You're an underrated part of our homegrown core and a professional hitter. You are Dave Magadan reincarnated! Unfortunately, you are probably our most tradeablle commodity and we have backup options in house. Whatever happens, we love rooting for you when you come up to the plate to the Dropkick Murphys.

Sounds like marketing speak for Murph is sticking around.

I love Murph!!  THE METS MUST KEEP HIM!!!

Don't really know why this is newsworthy but if Ike is the funniest guy on the team I'd rather see a Q&A with him.

Mercy Me??? Wow. Take his man card and Trade him now!!!

I only hope that someone who makes decisions is reading.  Flores is going to rake in the majors - I just have that feeling.  Murphy has become the heart and soul of the team, he's durable, and he plays hard.  So........TRADE IKE DAVID AND LUCAS DUDA, teach Wilmer how to play first base, sign Stephen Drew, and keep Tejada on the bench as a backup for 2B/3B/SS.

I'm watching Jose Fernandez highlights. How in the world could Sandy pass on this guy to get Brandon Nimmo? Holy smokes.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

Than lets sign Drew and be done with this. Cause trading Wheeler or Montero for anything less than a Stanton or Reyes is absurd.

getting Jose back will never happen. Do you really think sandy is going to admit the big mistake he made in not signing him. And that was going to give up 3 players for him when he could have been had for nothing. There's a better chance the Mets out spend the Yankees this year then sandy trading for Jose.

hwabouthat

Question.

Is trading Wheeler for Stanton a bad thing?

Is Wheeler, Thor, Montero, > Thor, Montero, Stanton? Or Wheeler, Thor, Reyes,

I hate the idea of possibly losing one of the Mets more productive players.

Reyes for Montero, Niese, Murphy. The Jays save about 15 mil on the deal get a starting lefty pitcher on a very nice deal who is still young with MLB experience. Plus a very solid prospect who has mid rotation stuff and throws strikes. You get Murphy who hits the crap out of the ball and is a solid team guy. The Jays also can have money to sign Drew to play SS. Getting rid of Reyes fills 4 holes for the JAYS.

I really like Murph and hope he sticks around. The guy works really hard and is constantly trying to better himself. They posted some statistics for second basemen for the past 2 seasons combined on SNY the other day which showed that Murphy was in the top 3 National league second basemen in like 5 key offensive categories - Avg, hits, xtra base hits, etc etc....pretty impressive really. I would not completely oppose trading him, but we better be getting back an equal performance player in return. We could do a lot worse than Daniel Murphy, trust me...he's pretty darn good.

Ike, Murphy, Tejada, and Mejia MIGHT raise an eyebrow from Toronto on Reyes.  They are looking for a starting pitcher, a second baseman, and some power.  Doubt Sandy has it in him, however.  Nevertheless, we need a leadoff hitter.

I would understand moving him in the right deal-- I would understand moving anyone in the right deal-- but from a purely sentimental standpoint I hope it never happens because from what I can see (granted, from the outside looking in)  he seems like a really good guy.  I hope his story works out in a way similar to the way things worked out for guys Mookie Wilson and Jesse Orosco-- players who clearly were giving it everything they had but often in hopeless causes for some pretty bad teams but who stuck it out long enough that they got to be part of the good times when they finally arrived.

Murph clearly enjoys being a Met, has a real sense of loyalty to the organization and has always been a good soldier about playing hard and being optimistic even when there was so often little apparent reason to play hard or be optimistic.   He's played everywhere on the diamond they've asked him to (not always successfully granted, but his effort was never the problem) without complaint and plenty of guys would've squawked about that.  It would be nice if all that was rewarded by his being part of a winner with the Mets.

And just so we're clear, none of that has anything to do with how good a player he is or how valuable he is to the team or alternatively as  trade chip.  I'm being purely sentimental.    You're allowed to be purely sentimental when you're a fan.

Team insiders say Murphy also likes puppies, rainbows, and unicorns, according to people familiar with Murphy`s thinking. (Cerrone)

Any possible scenario we can get Reyes back? He's due 16 mil this year. I mean Drew is going to get 12 mil. And Chris Youngs contract is for 1 year, Colon could be traded at the deadline when Thor and Montero come up. Granderson also has a no trade clause on his contract.

The Mets should trade for Reyes contract, hope Colon can dominate trade him at the deadline to a team that is desperate and get a solid prospect. I would definitely go to the ball park to see Reyes Wright d'Arnaud and Granderson, Murphy.

hwabouthat

Murphy is the man. Trade Duda AND Ike. Put Flores at 1st base and lets ride this thing out til Harvey returns in 2015. Then we'll have a sick rotation of

Harvey

Wheels

Thor

Montero

Mejia

Gee

Niese

Hefner

deGrom

With Chris Young on a 1 year deal. I could see Sandy trading some of that pitching for a of Stanton caliber.

maxster

Leave Murphy alone, and stop screwing around with Wilmer Flores. You are messing with him moving a 22 year old all over the field. HE SHOULD BE YOUR EVERYDAY 1st BASEMAN>. This kid is raking again in winter ball. Dump Duda and IKE, they suck. You have a jewel right in front of you. WAKE UP SANDY!!!!

Mr. SERCH
Mr. SERCH

If you think he's reached his ceiling, can maximize his value in a return, and have good replacements, whether in-house or from another signing, then you must trade him.

If you feel he is peaking and will get better, there is NO REASON to trade him unless the Mets are absolutely FLOORED by an offer...

cant trade him just to "save money" and because you have cheaper alternatives. He's a damn good player and they dont come along often. BUT, if you can improve the team in other areaS or for the future, then you move him....so he better not be some sort of salary dump

@hwabouthat The Jays are not looking to shave payroll, the Mets aren't looking to add it.  Other than that...

@hwabouthat : I love Reyes as much as anybody.  But holy crap you want to give away our 3rd best hitter, our only left starter and our 2nd best pitching prospect for a guy who the Mets could have signed without giving away anything a few years ago?

kefhrny17
kefhrny17

@hwabouthat and creates more holes for the Mets... Reyes? Please move on...

Vin Santiago
Vin Santiago

@hwabouthat so the Mets would get rid of three players under team friendly contracts to get a guy who's going to handcuff the team financially for the next four or five years who's never won anything but a batting title he sat himself to win?

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@sydd3 replies in pending... wow...

I'd sure sandy would do that deal if it was a remote possibility. Unfortunately it's not even close to reality. Ike wouldn't sniff an position, they have Bautista, Encarnacion, Lowerie, and Lind who are all better than ike, and all fighting for 3rd, 1st, DH... Murphy's upgrade at 2nd would come close to the downgrade at SS.... ANd Mejia while intriguing isn't as intriguing to other teams as he is to the Mets.

denelor

@hwabouthat I'd love to have him back in a salary dump for a few low level guys.  Problem is Toronto is in win now mode.  They're not trading Reyes for peanuts just to dump his salary.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@hwabouthat Possible but HIGHLY unlikely, especially if you don't plan on trading montero or Thor

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@maxsterWinter league stats are meaningless. Basically A-AA level talent, and Wilmer BETTER be raking against those.

I'm fine dumping Duda & Ike and seeing wilmer there, but don't complain when he goes thru struggles as well.

I'm also fine with a platoon of Duda/Satin with the mess that is out there and no other solutions in house.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@Sentimental SteveLike everything depends on Return, along with what other moves it makes.. Additionally if the Mets believe they can get similar production and defense from say Flores, i don't see any reason to not move him.

It looks likely as they won't be moving him this year, but it wouldn't shock me. He's solid, one of the few that mets have (Wright, Grandy, Murph) right now.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

@kefhrny17 Flores at second. Montero isn't on the MLB team yet so no hole there. Niese can be replaced by deGrom, Thor after the super 2 status deadline. And a bunch of scrap heaps to fill out the 5th spot in the rotation. Signing Drew is fair and easy. But Reyes bring waay more to the table.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

@Vin Santiago@hwabouthat Yes. But he won't "handcuff" the Mets as you say. The combined contracts of Niese and Murphy add up to about 43 mil. Reyes is owed 64 million. We have "in house" replacements that can take over for Murphy and Niese at dirt cheap prices. Flores, Thor, deGrom even going out and signing a Harang or Dice K would be relatively cheap. We lose production at 2nd base but not much as I think Flores would be a very passable hitting second baseman. Niese is good and has potential to be real good, but hasn't put it together and if trading him get us Reyes so be it. Montero is just still a prospect, you have to give to receive in these types of deals and you can look at this deal as us NOT having to give up Wheels or Thor AND gaining a top 5 SS at age 30 and fan favorite.

Sidd
Sidd

@Mark Kelly @sydd Replace Mejia with Montero or Niese.  Ike is nothing more than a $4M salary dump.  I think The value of Mejia remains in the bullpen.  Recall he was first billed as the second coming of Mariano Rivera.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@denelor@hwabouthatReyes will NEVER be moved for a few low level guys. Even in a complete salary dump.

WHen miami moved him they got BA's #86 prospect(Nicolino), Henderson Alverez who was already in the majors at 21, Yunel Escobar, Hechavarria (MLB#82 prospect), Marisnick(#64 BA prospect) and Mathis. THey flipped Escobar for Dietrick.

So they got a MLB Arm (who is 21 and was great last year), 3 top 100 Prospects (mets have 3 now) a catcher, and a 23 YO 2nd baseman... I know more players were included... YOu will still have to include some sort of top prospect.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

@Mark Kelly@hwabouthat Suppose the Jays would take Niese and Montero? We save some cash on the Niese deal and the Jays get back 2 very solid pitchers. We would still be able to scrap a rotation together with the loss of Niese.

Wheeler

Colon

Gee

Mejia

Sign a bunch of scrap heap guys like we've been doing til Thor, deGrom are ready.

2015 we'll have Harvey and Hefner back.

I understand not resigning him at the time as they had to choose between Wright and Reyes. But getting Reyes back would bring alot of fans back to the park and would go a loooong way into the Mets fans starting to forgive the Wilpons and giving the front office more respect.

gameball

@Mark Kelly@maxsterDuda Satin platoon could be a very acceptable stopgap to a more permanent 1B solution (D.Smith?)

Sorry Murph, I have no faith in Ike as a full-time 1B, despite his sense of humor.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@hwabouthat@Mark KellyAdditionally he's going to  make less than Murphy this year and isn't a FA until 2017 (when he'll be 28 and looking for a 200 mil contract)

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@hwabouthat@Mark Kelly2-3 guys most likely.

Stanton is 23 YO. and just had his worst season as a PRO with a 131 OPS+... To show how good he is, curtis granderson has had exactly 2 season with a better OPS+ than that.

I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Stanton. But it's going to GASH your minors... Wheeler/Thor, Montero is a start... throw in 1-2 other top 15 guys that they want, probably position players...

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@hwabouthat@kefhrny17But 5th starter hole, and 2nd base hole...

Your banking on an unknown that Flores will replace everything you get from Murph. Montero's hole is in SP depth, same with DeGrom and Thor..

You need more than 5 SP every year and trotting out scrap heaps aren't the way to build a winning team.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@hwabouthat@Vin Santiago Reyes is owed more than 64. He's owed 66 from 2015-2017 and 16 mil this year... so 82... Plus 4 for the buyout so 86.

Most don't think Flores can  handle 2nd (not sure what the FO thinks)... And you dont' want to rush Thor, DeGrom...

I'd love reyes and wish they never let him go, and don't think this is a remote possibilty... And he's agruably a top 2-3 SS in baseball.  not top 5.. when healthy and playing 160 games.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@syddI think if Mejia is BP bound his value Plummets and Montero as a SP becomes vastly more valuable.

Adding in Neise won't help the deal... Basically your not giving any salary relief to Tor, and they aren't getting a prospect package that is intreguiging, nor MLB level production to replace Jose.

To get Jose you will need to part with top prospects, it's just the way it is. Maybe you can throw them Murph, but you will need to include 1 or 2 TOP 5 guys who have HIGH ceilings (think more Thor than Montero)...

Jose is a proven AS, arguably the 1st or 2nd best all around SS in baseball with Tulo. These types of players just aren't given away.

Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly

@hwabouthat@Mark KellyNeise and Montero i could see as a possibility.... If they lose some SP and are in need. THis would still signal more of a win now mentality then a salary dump or re-build.
