Result: The Mets fell to the Braves 5-3 in the opener of a three-game series in Atlanta on Monday.
Need to know: Curtis Granderson got things going early with a leadoff home run off of Alex Wood, the 26th leadoff blast of his career. Travis d’Arnaud then registered an RBI double in the second to score Chris Young. Young’s sac fly in the third gave the Mets a 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler bounced back from the worst start of his career last week by allowing one earned run over seven and one-third innings. However, the bullpen would not be able to pick him up. Jeurys Familia came on to pitch the eighth inning and would make a key throwing error that helped load the bases with no one out. Then, Tommy La Stella singled to tie the game. Later in the inning, with two outs and the bases still loaded, Eric Campbell committed the Mets’ third error of the inning on a high hop, and the Braves took a lead they would not relinquish.
Game ball: La Stella gets it, for delivering the big blow off of Familia, a two-run single to tie the game in the eighth.
What’s next: The two teams continue their three-game set on Tuesday night in Atlanta at 7:10 PM. Daisuke Matsuzaka will pitch against Mike Minor.
