Carlos Beltran to the Giants is awaiting approval

According to SNY, a deal that will send Carlos Beltran to the Giants is currently awaiting player and league approval. Beltran has 24 hours to approve the trade.

Wheeler is the only prospect the Mets will be getting in the deal, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said on Twitter. In addition, according to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Mets will pay roughly $4 million of the $6 million due to Beltran for 2011.

Opinion added by Matthew Cerrone:

So, basically, we’re talking a top-pitching prospect in Wheeler for Beltran and cash, which, as far as I’m concerned, is a steal considering Beltran will test free agency at the end of this season and he cannot bring back draft pick compensation if he leaves. Wheeler instantly becomes the team’s top pitching prospect along with Matt Harvey, who, with Jeurys Familia, give the team a good stable of young pitching.

Andy Martino of the Daily News says talks between the Giants and Mets broke down last week over Zack Wheeler, ‘but Sandy Alderson held firm and never dropped price.’

Updated at 2:10 pm:

According to Sherman, the Giants are on verge of acquiring Beltran.

ESPN’s Buster Olney Wheeler is the center piece of the deal. To be more specific, OF prospect Gary Brown and LHP Jonathan Sanchez are not in the deal, Sherman said on Twitter.

According to Heyman, though the Rangers ‘tried hard,’ the Giants are currently the favorites to acquire Beltran, ‘and a deal could get done soon.’

Opinion added by Matthew Cerrone:

As I mentioned earlier today, I believe the Mets have been in deep talks with the Rangers and Giants over the last day or so, while continuing to keep a dialogue open with the Braves, Phillies, Red Sox and others. Right now, if I had to bet, I say he goes to one of Texas or San Francisco (though right now it’s clearly looking like the Giants) who will pay about half of his salary, while giving up at least two prospects in return.

Earlier today, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said Scott Boras is trying to get Beltran traded to the Giants, since they are a team that will have the necessary money to re-sign him after the season.

This past weekend, two Mets beat reporters said they were hearing more and more talk from people close to the team suggesting Beltran would eventually end up in San Francisco.

According to FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, while the Rangers are offering the Mets more players for Carlos Beltran, the Giants are offering fewer players but more quality.
