Jenrry Mejia

Rafael Montero could replace Mejia against Yankees

Jenrry Mejia could soon be in the bullpen, replaced in the rotation by Mets 23-year-old RHP prospect Rafael Montero (ESPN, May 11).

Mejia’s next scheduled start would be this week against the Yankees at Citi Field.

According to multiple reports, Terry Collins talked with Mejia on field before Saturday’s game and told the young pitcher that the team had yet to make a decision about next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Yankees.

Mejia, 24, is 3-0 with a 5.06 ERA. He’s averaging over 100 pitches and roughly five innings each start.

“You get a little concerned with the extra pitches he uses,” Collins explained to reporters on Saturday.

Mejia insists that he’s better suited for the starting rotation because of his history of arm injuries.

They haven't been hitting much at all... but more frustrating are the number of games that the Mets are tied, or winning going into the 7th that the bullpen can't get anyone out. It's freakin time... put Mejia in as the closer. He's got the right stuff for it.

Mejia is good for 5 innings. Middle relief for him.

Mejia has blown big leads in two games and his early exits tax an already overworked bullpen. You can't make him the closer immediately: put him in the pen and see how he does. Bring up deGram or Montero and release Papa Gopherball. Valverde has nothing left and Farnsworth has little more than that.

Nothing will work for this team anyway so try all the crap ya want

Change the hitting coach!

It's about time. Pitching isn't our problem though. Leaving men on base in scoring position is.

To answer the article, yes. Good idea. I think Mejia, if we have to keep him at all, is better utilized in the bullpen.

The mets will do what they always do with good pitchers they trade them lol

Not only bring up Rafael Montero also bring up Noah Syndergaard as well.

Reading Mejia's comments, he sounds almost defiant. This is when his agent needs to explain to him that he could stay in the big leagues 10 yrs if he can become a reliable rp, or he can go turn himself into a malcontent that gets buried in the minor leagues.

Mejia needs to close anyway he doesn't have a long term future as a starter w all the kids

I think it's a good idea. Mets need to inject life into this team, so bring up one of the young arms

It couldn't hurt. Mejia has probs. after 5th inning. But the bats need to get going more so than the pitching.

Meija should be given a shot in the pen, he can't be worse than Farnsworth. Who knows he could be a 40 Save guy.

If the Mets are going to sign Stephen Drew, it will be after June's draft. He carries 1st round compensation to Red Sox if any team signs him. The Mets should groom Mejia to be the closer. He has experience in the bullpen and would do well as a closer.

I don't like it because they should showcase Mejia. He does well, trade him. He struggles, stick him in the pen.

Montero sounds like some form of Gee anyway, so if Gee is going that series, might be tough to have two similar pitchers starting. Maybe not.

Before this season is over I want to see Dykstra at 1st, Montero and Syndergaard in the rotation, Mejia and deGrom in the bullpen, and Wally at the helm. And, in the event Flores defense isn't offset enough by what he offers offensively, sign Stephen Drew.

Familia is throwing strikes and has nasty stuff. He should be the closer. Mejia should be the 8th inning guy and Montero should be brought up to start with Valverde being released. Makes too much sense doesn't it?

team can't hit....the pitching keeps it close for the most part #FireTerryAndStaff

I feel sorry for him he was in bull pen last few years they made him to become a starter and now they are putting him back in the pen what a waste of time and he as a right to be upset

whats with the short leash?  Can you let the kid develop?  If you are going to put him in the bullpen, at least give the  guy the closer job.  He will easily have the best talent in the bullpen.

I still can't figure out why people don't understand that we have to wait until June to call up Syndergaard. it isn't rocket science people, if we wait until June we get him for an extra year. would u rather call him up 2 weeks early and NOT get that year? come on guys learn something instead of complaining about the same thing every day.

yes. let mejia be the closer so he can throw nothing but gas

Farnsworth and Valverde have to go. Transition Mejia to the bullpen, call up Montero, call up Black and only use Dice K as the long reliever.

"Mejia insists that he’s better suited for the starting rotation because of his history of arm injuries." with this statement, it says to me. . . relief role for you.

Wilmer can't play shortstop; Wilmer's the shortstop. Valverde's the closer - no, wait, now it's Farnsworth. Outfield will be a rotation, no - hang on, it's not. Montero to the bullpen. Actually, let's put him in the limelight and start him against the Yankees when the whole city is watching. Thank god the Mets aren't air traffic controllers.

Can't hurt! Actually, nothing could hurt the way they are playing right now!!

I agree that they need a spark. Problem is, the pitching is not that bad (even counting the bullpen). They do have the sorriest collection of unprofessional hitters I've ever seen. Seriously, how many times can guys be in scoring position with ZERO outs and not cross the plate.

Third round compensation from the mets. First is protected and second went for Grandy.

@SuperDuper  if you recall, Mejia is the one pitcher in the rotation who HAS actually gotten run support.. He has blown large leads.....his confidence is shot right now....

Pretty sure montero throws harder than gee

Not an extra year of control, by waiting until June. That deadline already passed. It's just an extra year before he becomes arbitration eligible. The waiting is just to pay him less, not to keep him longer before free agency.
