Quote: Wondering about the Future of Wright & Reyes

“I know it is fashionable to point to Oliver Perez or Jerry Manuel or some other issue with the Mets. But if David Wright and Jose Reyes were performing like 2006-2008, there would be a few more wins right now compensating for the other problems… I keep wondering about the future as much as 2010… The Mets probably know now – or should know – that they cannot build their team around Reyes and Wright.  And that is an extraordinary setback for now and beyond.”

~ Joel Sherman, New York Post

…i don’t know if this is true… it might be… i just don’t think it’s totally fair to judge these guys on what is happening right now, today… for whatever reason, reyes is struggling to get back to form… perhaps missing an entire year of baseball will do that to a guy… wright is trying to understand who he needs to be in this next phase of his career, post-beaning, in New York, on a team with so-so hitters… in 2006 – 2008, they were not THE guys… they were supporting characters, to a certain extent…

…so, maybe joel is correct… maybe that is their fate… or, maybe to be better, wright and reyes will be unable to rise until they too are surrounded by good supporting players… yes, Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriguez, and a few others, need nothing… they’re just awesome, period… but that’s rare… for all of Derek Jeters’s legend, would he be Derek Jeter had he had to play with an average cast of characters for so many years… would he, too, then have been just average… we’ll never know… but, to expect wright and reyes, who are still in their mid-20s to be great with barely any help is a little unrealistic… however, i think it’s totally fair for joel to ask these questions… he’s not alone, and this will not be the last time this topic is discussed…
