Earlier today on WFAN, Jerry Manuel told Mike Francesa he will use Bobby Parnell in save situations at certain points this season, just as Hisanori Takahashi will also serve as the team’s closer in certain spots.
Manuel also said he assess tonight as a big start for Pat Misch, as the Marlins can be tough on left-handed pitchers – in addition, Misch’s success will help direct how he plans the rotation going forward.
Lastly, he more or less said he is in the business of winning baseball games and trying to get this team hot, not play rookies for the sake of playing rookies.
Manuel also talked to reporters before the game, and, according to SNY’s Matt Dunn, he essentially said:
- He and the team still believe Jeff Francoeur can be a productive hitter, just like he was at this time last season.
- Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan can be a serious one-two punch at the top of the lineup for years to come.
- Ruben Tejada has struggled at the plate, but, though he will never be a great offensive player, someday soon he will be good.
