Poll results from Sandy and Terry approval ratings

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Last week, I ran two polls, each asking voters to state whether they approve or disapprove of the jobs being done by Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins in their respective positions on the Mets.

The following chart show how these results track over the last few years…

Management_Approval_Ratings (1)

Based on results from the 7,000 voters to each poll, it looks like Alderson has maintained a fairly high level of support, which I’d say is consistent with what I hear from fans at the ballpark and on talk radio and read from those via e-mail and social media. The major roster issues seem to be based more on spending strategy than execution, and it seems all rage about budget is directed toward the owners, regardless of how much say Alderson may or may not have in how that many is spent.

That said, he seems to get a lot of credit for totally turning around the farm system and getting the team in position to be able to legitimately compete with home grown players. At the same time, if he fails to acquire a big bat or significantly improve this team (if even only on paper) before the start of next year, I guarantee his support will take a major hit.

On the other hand, it looks like the tide has really started to turn against Terry Collins. He stayed at or above a 50 percent approval for a long while, but has since taken a beating. Again, this is very consistent with what I see and hear when talking with other Mets fans.

I’m usually fairly benign when it comes to baseball managers, and even I wrote last week that I’m starting to question how this team is being managed, especially as it pertains to soon having better players. Again, I’m not necessarily saying Terry should be fired; I’m just saying, based on what I’ve seen from Collins lately, and even though I know he’s under contract for another year, I think serious consideration should be paid to whether or not he’s the right man for the job going forward. And, clearly I’m not alone…

I have no confidence in SA.Until the WIlpons either sell or raise payroll to about 100-110 million to keep us at least in the middle of the pack the franchise is going nowhere.

Record will improve a bit next year just by getting rid of TC and Harvey returning.Hope he doesn't trade  De Grom or Wheeler away for a bust ala Andres Torres .Pagan has consistently killed us since that trade.

If we at least brought in Wally or a professional manager instead of the erratic Collins  i could see us improving to .500 or slightly above without much roster change.

Alderson's free agent pickups have been pretty much awful. Other than Colon, (whom Sandy is desperate to trade due to salary), his other major signings were Marcum, Granderson, FF and CYoung. Not a single one was worth the money he paid. His trades were better, but at the end of day, the team is still below .500. Anyone think things will be radically different next year? I don't.

Just as an FYI, Matt - this poll is kinda flawed. A straight yes/no can be misleading. I'm not overly happy with TC, but I don't think he should be fired either.

It boggles the mind that Alderson's support could be this high. I guess this proves that Lincoln was wrong.

"At the same time, if he fails to ...significantly improve this team (if even only on paper) before the start of next year, I guarantee his support will take a major hit."

He's been here for FOUR YEARS and this team STILL STINKS.  And his support hasn't taken a major hit, or even dropped at all.  I thought 2014 was the year?  All the "bad contracts" are gone, aren't they?  Now its 2015? 2016? It will go on forever and the fans will still make excuses for this guy.  It's sick.

I would bet that most of the negative comments are by 20- to 30 years olds of the "PARTICIPANT TROPHY" Generation. Many of these kids would complain if they won the world series in 5 games instead of 4.

They say: "We need a bat"--but don't offer well thought out game plan of who they want to offer for this bat and how much the bat will cost.

Sandy's mistakes have been 1 year errors (CY) ---

OMAR's errors: Jason Bay, Castillo, and $138 million to Santana that ended up with spending MORE MILLIONS than VICTORIES. You don't give pitchers in their upper 20's contracts of $138 million. The pre instant replay no hitter was not worth $138 million.

We are building the team through the farm system around great young pitching.

GREAT PITCHING BEATS GREAT HITTING.  Don't trade young inexpensive great pitching unless you are absolutely over loaded with it.

I equate this team to the 1984 Mets. May still miss the playoffs still in 2015 but the corner has turned and we are headed in the right direction.

Let's Go Mets!

Everybody just loves to complain, its human nature. Sandy Alderson took over a 1st class horror show that was the NY Mets organization and has done a commendable job in turning it around. Most people wanted results "yesterday", which is kind of understandable coming from the average fan. But also setting up the organization for continued success had to be part of the plan by anyone with any integrity and Sandy has done that. Terry Collins is in the unenviable job of Manager, all eyes are on him as he tries to win with a sub par roster, thus taking all the blame for the on field failures. If anyone is to blame for the failure of the NY Mets organization, it is the Wilpons. Greed and bad judgment has been their modus operandi as well as a failure to understand that fact. Baseball operations should be left to the baseball people hired to do that job and the owners should stick to being owners, (i.e.- writing checks and schmoozing). Only time will tell if Sandy has done a commendable job, which I believe he is doing and all will be forgotten when the fruits of his labors are realized.

I think I figured out why Robin Williams ended his life.  He must have logged in and read the comments section of the METS blog.  if ever there was a collection of miserable folks cuddling up to their pain and anger and channeling it at the METS it's here!

Alderson is weak.  He didn't even want Duda and Murphy on the roster.  He signed Granderson and what has that gotten us?  The pitching was in place when he got here.  He was looking to trade our consistent hitter, Murphy…to get a bat in the line-up.  OK…let's trade our only .300 hitter to get another hitter…he is a f**king genius!

Terry Collins has had to live with the hand he has been dealt.  At least the team has been competitive with a horrible offense and bull pen.

Some selective memory in these posts -- there was no way that Alderson could have gotten anything close to equal value for Reyes when it was obvious to everyone that he would test free agency.  Also, at that time Reyes was one of the few reasons anyone came to the ballpark.  All said, there was little upside to trading him for scraps.

Chris Young clearly was a mistake, but Colon has done exactly what they expected of him, maybe even a little more.  Granderson has been disappointing but not terribly so -- he does get on base, is a pretty good outfielder and adds a sorely needed veteran presence in the clubhouse.  Duda over Ike speaks for itself, and there is reason to be optimistic about the return on the Byrd and Dickey deals. The minor league system has gone from the trash heap to top five.  And sometimes it's about the deals you don't make -- check Mark Trumbo's numbers in Arizona, for example.

Alderson isn't perfect but look around -- the Tigers' payroll is north of Jupiter but they're chasing the freakin' Royals with an atrocious bullpen.  The Yankees spent a ton but they are seven games out of first and begging for the second wild card (sound familiar?).

I'm as frustrated as everyone else, but I'm more hopeful than I was a couple of years ago.

If this team had Harvey this season and Parnell (so we wouldn't have to rely on either Farnsworth or Valverde) would we be better?

The organization is better now than it was in 2011. Far better. Add those two back into the mix and we'd be better still.

Let's hope we're not crippled by major injuries in 2015.

I don't really think this poll is accurate. I agree Collins rating belongs in the dumpster as he is in no way a baseball manager. As for Alderson, I agree he has done some good things, but IMHO he is nothing more than a snake oil salesman. The blame of the franchise being where it is in this point of time is on his and the Wilpons shoulders with Collins being their henchman in the entire affair.

I don't know what fans Cerrone has spoken to, but any and all I have spoken to or know do not see Alderson in a positive light. But, if the Wilpons and Alderson actually attempt to make the team better this off season ( something I'm not holding my breath on), then they might regain a degree of trust from the fan base. As for Collins, the team will never win with him as the manager. He must go. I would like to see Wally ( another thing I'm not holding my breath on) or a manager in that style ( no nonsense, baseball savvy and definitely not a yes man for Aldersons ego). It's very depressing seeing this team in this condition year after year. Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Do we really need polls to rate management? What is the bar that defines success? Have either one of these managers met that bar? Have they made the correct moves to allow for success? Overwhelmingly, the answer is no. At the very least, by his own declaration, 90 wins was the goal. Both men should accept responsibility and move on.

grillruben

If we sign Byrd or Cruz over Young we are  in playoff contention. I'm not giving Alderson a pass. I think he stinks. We forget to look at the moves he didn't make. And getting absolutely nothing for Reyes was a devastating move. He knew they weren't gonna re-sign him so not trading him was insane. Abreu was unproven, but at that money, and success of Cuban players, that was a slam dunk move he didn't make.

I look at the Dodgers pitching guys like Hernendez and Correa and have a hard time thinking we couldn't have dealt Colon to them.

Also knowing we weren't gonna contend this season I think it was idiotic to not sell Gee at his pinnacle.

While he doesn't have Minaya's budget, he's done a poor job with what he does have. Also, Frank Fransisco.

TC is not the man to preach consistency in hitting approach or otherwise.  He  doesn't know the meaning of the word. (see Tejada/Flores, denDekker and the LF platoon, etc etc)

Disagree. Wilpons - yes... but Alderson has done a decent job with what he's been given to work with. We're saddled with very little baggage going into next year.

@2ndhalffun Harvey, Niese, Gee, Familia, Mejia, Duda, Murphy,Wright, Lagares were ALL Omar.

When people say:

WE NEED A BAT

they offer Cruz and Abreu!! In case you missed it they could have been had for less than Grandy and Chris Young. Cruz could have been signed in addition to Young with all that "if we're in it we're buyers" money.

Sandy is a buffoon and the fact that people here excuse him is absurd.

upstater
upstater

@2ndhalffun  Like 1984? Really? You think Sandy will trade for the equivalent of Hernandez and Carter? And someone on the current roster will hit like a Strawberry? Subtract those 3 guys and replace them with Duda, d'Arnaud and Granderson, and you think that's a playoff team?

upstater
upstater

@2ndhalffun  Wrong, wrong, wrong. I've been a Mets fan since the beginning. Minaya made some bad moves, true, but at least he tried. In NY, you have to try. Alderson hasn't tried. The kids he is getting credit for are mostly Minaya picks or the fruit of Minaya signings. When Sandy builds a team that plays better than .500, I'll believe. But this team won't come close and unless he all of a sudden makes a couple of brilliant trades or signings, next year's team won't either.

@Shinowa Macca Abeyta what exactly was so bad about the met organization when alderson took over? they were a 79-83 team with reyes, wright, beltran, pagan, murphy, thole, santana, dickey, niese, pelfrey... ike davis as a top young player...and harvey, lagares, gee, parnell, montero, tejada, and mejia in the organization.

you could make a very good argument the mets were better off before alderson took over than they are now.

Pete Brilvitch

Didn't he keep Duda over Ike? I've never heard that Sandy didn't want Murphy on the roster. Is it because he explored trade possibilities? If so, why is that such a bad thing? Were Wheeler and Colon already in place? What about Thor who should be in next year's rotation?

theglider

The pitching was in place? How so?

2ndhalffun

@Bob Primosch Additionally the money that Reyes got was a huge % of the payroll. I loved Reyes but at that time the Mets were going through the Madoff mess and just couldn't spend that much. I am more optimistic now than have been since 1984 turn around.

BringBackDaveTelghe

And don't forget to mention by keeping Reyes he got a first round comp pick for him...which turned into Pawlecki...one of the better C prospects in all of baseball.

BringBackDaveTelghe

We're trending in the right direction.  Honestly...my biggest fear right now is that Wilmer Flores and den Dekker put up OK to decent stats the rest of the year and the team rolls into next season with them as the starters.  It would just be more of the same with no real improvements anywhere.

@rf04 We're still "saddled" with Wright!

You Can't find a Clydesdale to fit that saddle.

Sandy HAS been terrible.

Wheeler is one claim to fame.

Darnaud the jury is still out on.

Let a batting champ walk for ZERO.

Traded a Cy Young winner for 2 prospects...........1 of which he is terrified of allowing super 2.

Farnsworth?

Valverde?

Chris Young?

Bobby Abreu?

Not going after Cruz?

Not going after THE RIGHT ABREU?

Not keeping a Justin Turner?

Signing Rick Ankiel?

Sandy has shown he has not done a decent job as you previously stated

upstater

@Coupon Hater @2ndhalffun  And deGrom and Flores and den dekker. And perhaps even Wheeler should count for Minaya, since Sandy couldn't have gotten him without Minaya having signed Beltran to a deal that Sandy would never have agreed to.

rf04

@upstater @2ndhalffun He's tried within the budget he's been given. I think considering that, he's done a decent... not good or great job. But if some of these young players pan out well - maybe he has done a great job. Too early to know for sure.

@kingman76 @Bob Primosch Sure Reyes was often injured but Wright has played 1 game more than reyes since 2011!!! ONE!

Reyes has same HR more 3B, higher batting avg, higher slg, more sb, more hits, more runs, less k and a higher OPS than Wright in LESS AB this year.

But Sandy did great dropping 1/4 the Budget on Davey! NOT

People forget that Reyes was injured. They also forget that he was injured in the past and was destined to get injured again. He was a joy to watch, but that was then.

flmetsfan

@BringBackDaveTelghe But that's what they want.  They want to encourage hope without investing in the franchise.  Despite how many people posting around here say that Flores is an upgrade over Tejada, he's not a major league shortstop, and denDecker is at most a fourth outfielder.

You know what I'm expecting next year..."we don't have to spend money on a shortstop when we can always bring up Matt Renyolds after Super Two."

As they continue to convince their fans that prosperity is just another rookie ballplayer away, the Mets will turn into the proverbial, "wait 'till next year" team for years to come.

theglider
theglider

They will get a shortstop who can field. That's all they want from that position and for good reason.

The thinking is they'd rather have a #8 hitter with a glove than a #6 hitter who's a butcher.

That's what happened this year. The fact that we're still in shouting distance, although still a long shot at best, is remarkable.

We've lost 3/5 of our rotation (not counting Harvey), Parnell, Meija, and Dice-K.
