Poll results on level of disappointment at trade deadline

In a poll posted to MetsBlog earlier today, 55 percent of more than 5,200 voters said they are not disappointed the Mets did not make deal before Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline…

In a poll with the exact-same question posted to ESPN New York late Thursday, roughly the same percentage of their 1,600 voters said the same…

I don't want cargo or tulo they are always injured and not a regular injury

Something where there out a long time I mean tulo had needles stuck in his hip flexor and second of all it would be to much payrol for Fred and jeffy Who need to be put through wavers

Before i make my point let me say this Wright is no miggy...Let me continue. Miggy in 2012/2013 had unreal years. Hes still great but he is not hitting like miggy. The difference was Fielder. Yes he wasnt terrific in detroit but still he could take you deep any at bat. Duda is not fielder...he is better this year but to say duda is fielder is absurd. Wright had Delgado and beltran in his best years. Point being get a real threat...someone who pitchers fear. Someone even the best of pitchers dont want to face with men on. not tulo...Stanton can be had...trade pitchers to the cubs who can trade their hitters to miami who gave away their future third baseman and have holes in their infield.

I think its for the best we didnt make a move

mets have one of the best farm systems in baseball. Sign the cuban tomas and trade for castro in a deal centered around montero, and maybe a lower level arm. trade colon for a solid prospect to replenish what we may lose and just maybe entertain a possible trade of murphy, and if we vet a good offer for murph I would fast track herrera ( I know he hasnt done it long enough but Its a calculated gamble ) with matt reynolds at second UNTIL dilson is ready to start the season. Money wise we cut 11 mil with the trade of colon, we cut around 9 mill with the trade of murph with arbitration. keep up with me, thats 20 mill off the books but with castro making 9 mill per and tomas will sign around a 10 mill per contract, Our payroll doesnt change much with that logic.

At the end of the day talent is what makes a team better and not just spending money just to say we spend money. Trade, free agency, and promote from the minors all have equal factors in making the mets better. Maybe my theory is slightly off but the grand point is you need multiple ways in making your team better PLUS not being afraid to take a gamble on some prospects. pitching is all there, even the bullpen and we needed two bats and knowing this front office and trying at the same time of making the fans happy, while getting tirex of the murph errors, this is a win win and win for the fans and the front office.

ps: The cargo tulo talk is kinda interesting but I value the farm system and value of young prospect MORE than a couple of off injured big contract huge split road and home stats.

Montero + flores> smyly franklin for price .. don't say you don't need starting pitchers because what you can do is trade price on the off season for a big bat and still have thor on your roster ... look what Boston just did your saying if the mets made that move they wouldn't be able to do the same?? Face it Collins is not a fan of flores or he'd be playing him every day .. and on top of that we have a road block at second base with Murphy so now you take care of the log jam at second you rent out price you get your left fielder and then you shoot for a short stop now go for Castro .. can move Nimmo and lower level pitching prospect and boom there's your 2015 team ... not hard at all to be a mets gm..

lineup is:

Grandy

Murphy

Wright

Duda

C. Young

D'Arnaud

Lagares

Tejada

Niese.

Michael Jacoutot
Michael Jacoutot

just an FYI - C Young is batting 5th and playing LF today.  so much for just "showcasing" him.

from mets.com....Young went 1-for-10 over three games from July 21 to July 24 before doubling in four straight at-bats on consecutive nights Saturday and Sunday at the Brewers. Since, he is 2-for-14 with an RBI and two runs scored, including a 1-for-5 performance in Wednesday's win.

is his Defense that much better than Soup's? Yes, but THAT much?!

I am disappointed that any trades did not take place. The trade deadline is exciting, especially when we make a great deal. I voted that I was disappointed.

That being said, it sounds like the right deal was probably not available to us. I imagine that there are at least a few others like, me who would have voted that they were disappointed but also believe the right action was likely taken.

I wasn't disappointed until I saw what Tampa got for Price. Now i know we need a LF or SS but I would had been as excited if we got Price. I know we could have gotten Price without giving up Syndeguard or Herrera or Nimmo. Flores,Montero,Plawecki would have gotten that done. Price,Wheeler,Colon,Gee/Niese,deGrom is a nice 5 for the next 2 months. Then next season Harvey,Price,Wheeler,Syndeguard,deGrom would have been dominant

"Stanton can be had"? Yeah, throw in deGrom and Wheeler. Let's create holes in our starting rotation.

@dannym28 Miggy was on that same level in 2010 and 2011 before Fielder got there. Also, Victor Martinez is having a better year than Fielder did last year and very comparable to 2012 Fielder. Miggy has been historically great and sustaining that performance for very long is so improbable, even for someone as incredible as him.

benmoz

@Chris even though he's no sure thing, he seems like one of the better outifeld options we could possibly sign this offseason, and most importantly he's young.

benmoz
benmoz

@imjimmybx he's not a 3 hitter plain and simple. His best years was when he was hitting 5th; behind Beltran and/or Delgado.

They seem to be able to have Duda as the legit 4 hitter now, so they need to sign/trade for a 3 hitter and move Wright back to 5 if they want to get the most out of him

benmoz
benmoz

@gattsu because he's hitting .315 over his last 5 games

gattsu

@moeb You literally think exactly how I do regarding the Mets, down to the T. I agree that Murphy is worth shopping. I understand why people are reluctant to deal one of our few good bats but if you get great value for him then you do it. I really like Murphy and I believe that he can be part of a winning club here, but if he can help address the SS/LF problem then I would explore it.

benmoz
benmoz

@Cathy Rivera The Tigers had to give up Austin Jackson, who is WAY better and more proven than Flores, and Flores could only hope to actually produce consistenyl like Austin jackson does for as many years as he has done so, and Smyly who has over 280 innings in his career with a 3.50 ERA. He is better than Montero as this point.

that being said, the Rays didn't really get too much for Price, but he has only 1 year left after this one at a very high price tag (no pun intended) on his contract.

benmoz

If you want a pitcher for 20 million a year, just sign Lester in the offseason (never gonna happen with the Mets, but that's my point exactly) while we are in fantasy world, we wouldn't even have to give up any prospects for the pitcher.

Not that we need it AT ALL though, even with the injuries to Niese, Gee, our rotation has been ridiculous this year, and has won us tons of games while the offense has been non existent.

It is smart for Sandy to wait it out an extort as much value out of the players that we want to move, while spending the least in terms of prospects to fill the holes that we want to fill.

Y'all are complaining now, but wont be in 2 or 3 years, when we have a conteding team and a deep farm system because we didn't give up half of it for Carlos Gonzalez or something.

I'm not saying that definitely won't happen, but the point is Sandy clearly wasn't comfortable trading for them (the Rockies probably asked for Syndergaard and a lot more just for Cargo, and there's no point in ding that right now, unless you really fancy yourself in the wild card race right now, in which case I point you to the fact that we are only 5.5 games out anyway.

@benmoz I've been saying this about Wright for years. It's a shame that he's been on a team most of his career that didn't give him enough support. He should have always been a two or five-hole hitter.

jmjmjm
jmjmjm

@benmoz  This is conjecture. In 2008 he batted 3rd for 619 of his 626ab and was great. In 2007, he hit .368 in 242ab batting third.

gattsu
gattsu

@benmoz @gattsu Great... That small sample of success will guarantee his starts for the rest of the season.

Cathy Rivera
Cathy Rivera

Tigers gave up Jackson because they needed a Mariners prospect to get price ... Instead of a 3 team trade just look it it from the Rays perspective. . They basically gave away for David price for smyly and Franklin. .. so if the mets have the same prospects the Rays wanted for price you wouldn't have to involve a third team... Also I know price will have a high "price" tag after next year (lol will never get old) but if your just renting him for the remainder of this season and dealing him in this upcoming off season who cares what he's going to get when he's a free agent.. OK and if montero is not as proven as smyly your saying you wouldn't pull that trigger with gee and flores then?

@11gilkey not a need? Niese's arm is not doing well Gee hasnt shown much since coming back and even if they were healthy that is a massive upgrade over those 2. I would have taken a shot especially with so many games against washington coming up. Pitching is what wins now not 40+ homerun hitters. Those guys do nothing in the post season

benmoz
benmoz

@jmjmjm @benmoz in 07 and 08 when he hit 3rd he had Beltran and Delgado hitting behind him... so they switched it up. My point is he has no protection in this lineup. There is no feared consistent hitter in the Mets lineup right now batting behind Wright to prevent all pitchers from basically toying with him the entire time, pitching around him, whatever you want to call it.

benmoz
benmoz

@imjimmybx I know he has been hurt a ton over the past few years, but he is hurt this year as well. He has said publicy that his shoulder is not 100%, and I'm sure that is affecting it somewhat.

And as I've been saying for years now, there is no true feared hitter in the lineup to provide Wright protection. Duda is having a great year but his hitting comes late in the game, and in spurts.

The point is that pitchers basically pitch around Wright all the time, and he's chasing because he's pressing trying to carry the team on his back like he always has.

I firmly believe that with at least 1 more legit bat (if not two) the entire lineup will perform better as a whole, including Wright.

benmoz
benmoz

@gattsu @benmoz If you want to manage like that go right ahead. And that's why you're not a MLB manager haha.

gattsu
gattsu

@sjm25 @gattsu Well if SS/LF can be addressed without dealing Murphy AND if the Wilpons are willing to pay him, then I absolutely keep Murphy as well. I've always liked Hardy and would definitely prefer him over Castro. Who I really want from the Cubs is either Baez or Bryant (I know this is probably impossible). I've heard that Baez won't be able to field SS at the major league level though, so it may be best to just sign a proven bat like Hardy and keep our prospects.

Michael Jacoutot
Michael Jacoutot

@11gilkey i'm going to agree with Bernard (gilkey) that we need to hold on to our position players.  you're giving up 2 of our top 5 position prospects for another SP.  We're set there.

dannym28
dannym28

why give up assets like Herrera and probably a matz + niese for an expensive pitcher rather than saving those pieces for a position we need real help at

jmjmjm
jmjmjm

I don't get how not having protection in the lineup means that Wright is not a #3 hitter. I get that hitters may perform better when they're surrounded by other hitters, I just don't get what this says about Wright's ability to hit third and how this would be any different than if he were hitting second, fourth, fifth, etc.

gattsu
gattsu

@Michael Jacoutot @11gilkey If gilkey's proposed package of Flores, Montero and Plawecki could net us Price, I do that trade EVERY SINGLE DAY! Imagine this rotation for 2015:

Price

Harvey

Wheeler

DeGrom

Niese

That's not even including Gee, Syndergaard, Colon, or Montero. They compete with Niese for the 5th spot and the losers make great trade chips. There is no such thing as too much pitching and Price would give us the best starting pitching in the league for YEARS to come.

paul hydock
paul hydock

@jmjmjm You get better pitches when you are "protected" in any lineup  !!

dannym28
dannym28

@gattsu @dannym28 @Michael Jacoutot @11gilkey no attitude but my point is why spend on pitching when we have glaring holes in 2/8 of our lineup. Lets use assets for hitters first and then we should focus on the pitchers. but you are right tampa was robbed
