Don't let Mr. Met's smile fool you, he's lonely. Someone needs to stand next to him with ugly plaid shorts and a beer belly. Wearing a goofy smile would help too.

How awesome would...Matt Kemp and Stephen Drew be.

1. Kemp - R - CF

2. Murphy - L - 2B

3. Wright - R - 3B

4. Granderson - L - LF

5. Davis - L - 1B

6. Duda - L - RF

7. Drew - L - SS

8. D'Arnaud - R - C

9. Wheeler-Niese-Colon-Gee-Mejia

We still have way too many Lefty to Righty hitters, and I'd rather see Satin or Flores learn to play OF, so then you have 3 options at 1B/OF for maximum security cause I do not trust Duda or Davis yet, but that's a pretty decent squad.

Of course both those players would put us at the league avg. for payroll, and we all know they don't want that...

Team still needs a shortstop, and 1b. Still don't know what we have at catcher.  We will start the season better in the outfield defensively. But other than DW, we don't yet know what will be our infield.

BTW. I signed up with my original Metsblog name via SNY.tv with email address I use for junk!  Still, I don't like the new posting format.  I miss the characters here...the good, the bad and the absurd.

They made a couple of solid moves but it would be great if they could just add one more major power bat and they need to address the bullpen

Cannot wait! That means 2 more months of this crappy cold weather

Just curious.  If the season started now - how many wins do you think the Mets end up with this season.

I'll start.

I don't want to get rid of ike just for the hell of it but I can't say the same thing for duda...

First base is interesting.  Our choices are:
Duda alone

Duda/Satin platoon

Davis

Flores

I don't want to give the job to Duda...he's way too limited of a player.

If we were on the cusp of the postseason, I'd say Duda/Satin platoon - it's got the best chance to put up league average production.  But we're not that close, IMO, to the playoffs.

That leaves Davis or Flores.  Since we decided to punt on 2014 (or at least make it a VERY long shot), I think Davis has the best chance to put up higher than league average production next year.  It's not a great chance, but the best chance.  Plus, Davis is under team control for three more years, so if he stinks we cut bait, confident he won't pull a Chris Davis someplace else.  And if he finally puts it together and is good, we can trade him or sign him long term.

Flores should be the backup plan, he's still young.  We can have him start the year in AAA to rebuild his confidence (and value).  He's our fall-back 1B option, our back-up 3B if Wright gets injured, or a trade chip to a team that needs a 3B (which is actually a lot of teams).

Satin & Duda could be used to fill out our bench or be traded.

a new shortstop, preferably Drew or Owings would be great, get rid of Ike, the only thing we still lack would be the serious slugger/homerun threat we wanted.

Hey guys at Metsblog this new system blows. Couldn't keep my old userid and it doesn't notify you when someone responds to your posts.

When did Drew become a good SS.? Making some good defensive plays in the playoffs does not make your lack of plate discipline, high strike out rate, and no base running skills disappear.

If Drew doesn't get signed by Christmas then his value will drop. I think if it does then Sandy will make a push for him. If Drew does get signed for a reasonable amount of money they should trade Montero and other prospects in a deal for a 1B. We can be legitimate contenders with a reliable SS and 1B. Although, if they don't sign Drew, which I'm perfectly fine with, they should trade Montero and others for Owings or Gregorius and have Flores and Ike/Duda at 1B.

jasonbay
jasonbay

Please, please, please Santa - deliver Chris Owings to the Mets this Christmas.  I can't stand another season watching pudgy, disinterested Tejada or a career backup like Quintanilla.

hrvwlzthor
hrvwlzthor

I think right now with Tejada at SS we can win 82-85 but if we get a solid SS like Drew than they can win between 86-89 and contend for a WC

hankypanky

Can't wait to see Flores at first base where he belongs. Hopefully Duda and Davis will be gone in package trades and Satin will be on the bench. That plus the pitching staff should put us at 85 wins.

the first month into Mid-Jan will go fast (holidays, etc.);  that second month into mid-Feb is going to drag!!

@Jeff Tinsman

Are you kidding?  What is Duda doing in the outfield?  What is Davis still doing on this team?  Where is Lagares, E. Young or C Young?

kenmetskni

Duda in RF?! Flores in the OF?! Do you think just anyone can play OF?

Jamal Damon
Jamal Damon

@jasonbayIf Bartolo Colon pitches like he did last year and Chris Young yes I said his can have year anywhere close to his numbers two years ago then I will say 80 but I will stick with 75 until then..

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

75. Still too many question marks for 80 wins. SS, 1B, lead off hitter, #5 hitter, bullpen (Parnell's health).

I hear what ur saying but there will always be people who show. The Wilpons should either start responding money and if they don't want to then sell

Granderson is not a hr threat? Dude gonna launch 30+. His splits show he is not a Yankee stadium only guy.

hankincolo

@MMIAA I agree, it wasn't broken but they fixed it, WTF is up with that?

Muhammad Khan
Muhammad Khan

He's not great but would def be an upgrade over Tejada

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

He had a 777 OPS last year. That is very good for a SS. Especially a SS who plays very good D.

jasonbay
jasonbay

@tommets I don't see any good 1B candidates we could realistically land in trade.  I'd rather see us trade for a young middle infielder since SEA and AZ seem to have a surplus.  Tejada and Tovar seem like career backups, and Cecchini and Rosario are far away if they make it at all.  I'd like a young SS with upside who we can develop alongside TdA.

Hodges14
Hodges14

@tommets   Definitely still have work to do.. need a SS, settle first base, a backup catcher and some bullpen help.  Good to see the Mets actually trying to improve this winter.  Keep it up!

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

I like the direction we are going, but I don't see this as a 500 team with Tejada at SS. Even if he plays well I am afraid he will get hurt again. Then we are back to ground zero.

niesesnose
niesesnose

I think we're more an 80-82 win team now and with a new SS (Owings/Drew) we can win like 84

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

I'd be on board with 85 wins if we had Flores at 1B and Owings at SS. Also, the bullpen needs some help. Parnell's health is still a question mark.

niesesnose
niesesnose

Because when you get into February you start to realize how close Spring training and you start anticipating it, and when you anticipate something greatly it seems to take longer to come

hankincolo
hankincolo

@metsaholic Davis has been so bad and so confounding, other teams are finding players they probably consider more reliable.  That's why he's still on the Mets.

jasonbay
jasonbay

@kenmetskni He's been very streaky over the past few years, and he was replacement level in 2012.  And he's not getting any younger.

niesesnose
niesesnose

Chris Owings hopefully. And for backup catcher, I really have no problem with Recker. The guy has decent power.

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

It is nice to see. What are your thoughts on Chris Owings at SS? It would probably take Montero plus someone else (like Plawecki or another pitching prospect), but he is the guy I want.

Izeaac Izenhower
Izeaac Izenhower

@kenmetskni  I still think your paying too much for a streaky player who never lived up to his potential. he doesn't rank too high in many major batting categories against other SS. Besides OPS.

I understand that he is a free agent. With the enormous amount of K 124 and lack of base speed 6 SB. Why overpay for him? I am not saying he isn't an upgrade to what we have but he is not worth that much. Would you take any of these SS listed below over him? If so why or why not?

I'd much rather we get Owings. I don't really want Drew. However, the person I was replying to didn't seem to think Drew had any value.

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

Didi Gregorius is one if Arizona's young SS. The better player, and the one I want, is Chris Owings.

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

Agreed. In fine with Recker as a back up. Trade Montero (or Gee) and a younger pitching prospect (not Syndergaard) for Chris Owings.

Owings SS

Murphy 2B

Wright 3B

Granderson LF

Flores 1B

C. Young RF

d'Darnaud C

Lagares CF

Trade Ike for bullpen help. Keep Duda as insurance for Flores at 1B.

Bench: EYjr, Satin, denDekker, Recker, Tejada

Rotation: Colon, Wheeler, Niese, Gee or Montero, Mejia/Dice K/Degrom/Syndergaard (when ready)

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

I agree. Gregorius carried a 700 OPS in the minors. Last year, in over 100 games with the Dbacks, he had ZERO steals. We need a SS who can be our lead off hitter. Than we can keep Murphy and Lagares in the everyday lineup and not try to shoe horn EYjr in there. Owings is the guy!

jasonbay
jasonbay

@niesesnose Didi hit .252 and OPS+ of 94 in his age 23 season.  I wouldn't say he's hopeless with the bat.

niesesnose
niesesnose

Really don't see the big deal about Didi. Guy is all glove and can't hit.
