Palm Beach Gardens city council orders to end project for new Spring Training facility

The Palm Beach Gardens city council has ordered an end to a project to build a new Spring Training complex for the Blue Jays and Astros (Palm Beach Post, Jan. 10).

Currently, the Astros’ complex is in Kissimmee, and the Blue Jays’ complex is in Dunedin on the west coast of Florida.

The Braves and the Expos are the two most recent teams to have their complexes in West Palm Beach – both left in 1997.

This isn’t good news for the Mets, or any of the teams with a complex on the east coast of Florida. It impacts not only their Spring Training travel, but also the travel of the Single-A St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League.

As it stands today, the Mets play way too many games against the same opponents during Spring Training. A lot of those games are against their NL East rivals, which they play 19 games against — each — during the regular season. At a minimum, they have a one-hour bus ride to any other camp, and teams like the Astros, Braves and Tigers are all currently 2-3 hours away from Port St. Lucie. This current problem also creates an uncomfortable familiarity which teams both on the west coast of Florida and in Arizona do not have to deal with to this degree.

This would have added two more teams within a one hour drive of Port St. Lucie, both of which are not in the National League East. It would mean fewer games against the same teams, less time spent on buses, and more time spent on baseball fields during a time players need to be preparing for the regular season. Hopefully there’s some kind of resolution in the coming year, as it would be a win for a lot of organizations…

Move out to Port Charlotte. My in-laws have a house 5 mins from the Rays facility. It works for me because I would get to see good baseball. Lol.

You would think Disney and Orlando would take a look at how well spring training is run in Arizona and how that all of the teams are within 50 miles of each other.  They could totally make Florida spring training an easy spring destination: Disney and Baseball.  Some great family trips there...

So they've gotta triple a team in the brutal temperatures of las vegas, which I'd think would be tough on pitchers in terms of fatigue along with ideal hitting conditions, and their spring training facility is in Floridian Siberia, giving competitors too good a look. We don't like being the "poor me" mets fans, but this is not reassuring stuff.

The one thing I don't like is the fact the mets play waaaaay too many spring training games against their nl east rivals I know this will never happen but I would like to see them move to either the west coast of Florida or to Arizona that way they could play teams that they would only face 6 times a year not 19.

Don't the Mets have some stpulation in their agreement with Port St. Lucie that lets them opt out of the location early if no team move closer?

138 acres of land in the Tampa Bay area was recently sold to build a spring training facility.  Still a long way away and they need to lure a team there... but I'd love if it were the Mets!  Mainly because this would be 5 minutes from my house, so nothing against Port St. Lucie.  But as it stands now it would also make it so they are within an hour or so from 6 other teams (Yankees, Phillies, Braves, Tigers, Pirates and Astros).

boohoo they have to ride a bus to go play practice children's games, while many of them are making millions of dollars a year. My heart aches for these big babies.

This from the NY Times, March 12, 2012:

"As part of the $2.4 million stadium renovation deal with county officials, the Mets extended their lease agreement to 2023. But that contract has a clause that allows them to walk away, albeit with some financial penalties, if the number of teams in the area, including the Mets, drops below four. This area is liberally considered to stretch as far as the Braves in Orlando."

The Wilpons would move the spring training camp to Saskatchewan if there was another buck in it for them. I don't think the Mets will move, but they will probably use this clause to squeeze more money out of PSL.

Just another thing the Mets and the clowns who own the team got absolutely wrong.  You probably don't want teams in your own division to have first hand experience in spring training seeing all your pitchers, especially the young ones.  Ideally you'd want them to hone their wares against teams they wouldn't see much of during the regular season. This organization is awful in absolutely every aspect of the game.

Who we play in ST games means nothing for the regular season. Get real.

@7up17togo Maybe Jeff can make a couple of round trips and fly them in his helicopter to the games.

@Macacawitz The argument works the other way around, too. Are the owners of the braves clowns?

Let's be honest about something though...do you really think any data gleamed from spring training stats or abs is going to help a pitcher of batter?

Maybe it helps with seeing a release point but that's really it. If ST stats are nonsensical on every level I'm not sure what Info you're really getting.

@Macacawitz

and now tell what the Mets Ownership can do about the facts that pretty much only NL East (exept St:Loius) are in the vicinity - it was not that way when the Mets moved there in the 80s and the league looked very different as well. The only thing they actually could do is move the team somewhere else.

Otherwise don't put blame just for the blame sake - this is really something they can't do anything about.

@Kavalor @Macacawitz Then move the team.  Others do, every year.  The Mets will sit on a problem for five years when other teams fix it in a week.

There is some little small thing like contacts involved.
