The Orioles are now interested in Mariners infielder Nick Franklin, joining the Rays and Mets, sources told Jon Heyman (CBS Sports, Mar. 13).
In Baltimore and Tampa, Franklin would be a candidate to play second base, his natural position, while the Mets view him as a possible shortstop.
According to Heyman, “The likelihood of a trade somewhere seems strong at this point,” since, “discussions are ongoing.”
Franklin, who hit 12 home runs for the Mariners last season, is batting .304 this spring.
The Mets have been scouting Franklin most of the spring, while also monitoring competition between D-Backs SS Didi Gregoriusand Chris Owings, multiple sources told columnist John Harper (Daily News, Mar. 12).
Meanwhile, as of late February, the Mets still had strong interest in signing free-agent SS Stephen Drew (NY Post, Feb. 25). They reportedly offered him a one-year, $9.5 million deal, but he’s still looking for more money and years (Heyman, Feb. 21).
