Orioles, Mets and Rays all interested in M’s SS Nick Franklin

The Orioles are now interested in Mariners infielder Nick Franklin, joining the Rays and Mets, sources told Jon Heyman (CBS Sports, Mar. 13).

In Baltimore and Tampa, Franklin would be a candidate to play second base, his natural position, while the Mets view him as a possible shortstop.

According to Heyman, “The likelihood of a trade somewhere seems strong at this point,” since, “discussions are ongoing.”

Franklin, who hit 12 home runs for the Mariners last season, is batting .304 this spring.

The Mets have been scouting Franklin most of the spring, while also monitoring competition between D-Backs SS Didi Gregoriusand Chris Owings, multiple sources told columnist John Harper (Daily News, Mar. 12).

Meanwhile, as of late February, the Mets still had strong interest in signing free-agent SS Stephen Drew (NY Post, Feb. 25). They reportedly offered him a one-year, $9.5 million deal, but he’s still looking for more money and years (Heyman, Feb. 21).

Here are poll results from yesterday asking about the team’s future at shortstop:

what should the mets do at ss

So 91% of fans don't want to see Tejada play SS, although that will be the ultimate outcome of this.

You "fans" are saying you want Drew at $12M per??  PLEASE. The dude is worth 9, more like 8 and that's with a history of injuries and a mediocre bat. But ya, let's do it as a significant upgrade from what we have right now and see him play 80-90 games.

The results of this poll are scary. Mets fans will just throw money at a problem, even when there are better options available. Stephen Drew is an improvement over Tejada/Flores, but he's still just an average player. With better shortstop options out there next offseason, why would you ever want to give Drew more money and years than he's worth?

If we're going to spend money, we should bring in Morales, who could provide far more offensive production than Drew for the same price. Also, if we're going to make a move at shortstop we're much better off trading a guy like Rafael Montero for either Owings or Franklin. We have a plethora of pitching prospects, and we can afford to trade an arm for a bat. Let's not overvalue our own prospects here. Montero is expendable.

Why don't the Mets try to get Byrd back and play SS. Worked out well last year when they had him instead of Bourn who would have cost the team a draft pick. Lets make lightening strike twice!

There was suppose to be a position battle at short and Flores has started one stinking game there. I am not saying Flores is the answer at short but how do we know if we don't give him reps. Running Tejeda out there everyday is just showcasing to other teams how weak we are at that position and how much of an upper hand the other team has over the Mets in a trade. I swear more and more I feel like Collins asks himself "what would be best for my team" so he can do the exact opposite.

franklin and the kids from the d backs have years of cheap pay. Drew making 12 million is not what the mets need to do. Also why do we need to keep all of our pitching prospects? Most good prospects are not very good in the majors. Just make the trade for franklin. He can hit. D looks average, but who cares. He will be cheap for years

Franklin is a 2nd baseman. Flores is a 3rd baseman. Tejada is a minor league SS. They need to get Drew or work a deal with the Diamondbacks for a true SS.

LOL stephen drew at 12M per season, you guys are delusional. That is just not good business, period. It's not about being a fan, it's really about not drinking the kool-aid, you can't pay 12M for 1 win, just can't.

For those of you who say "Give Flores the Job".

CCCCCCCOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEE OOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!

Flores at SS will only make things worse.  He is inexperienced at SS.  Tejada is showing he can't handle the position. Nick Franklin is no more than an average shortstop with offensive pop and barely average defense.   He ain't worth trading young, quality pitching for.

WHY NOT SIGN STEPHEN DREW!?!?!?!?!  The Mets want him, and Scott Boras knows it.  If Sandy wants to reach his "90 wins" goal, Stephen Drew is the only answer.

As long as it costs plawecki and a pitching prospect even if it's degrom I say as long as the ss is a legit ss and can help this team win

what would it take to get Starlin Castro?

So I have not checked all of the postings, but what do we think about Jimmy Rollins in a trade for the year?  GIve the Tejada, Matz, Newenhies and call it a day.

I know it is in the devision but they get 3 youngsters they can use for trades or put in lineup when their old folks die.  If Sandberg is tired of his act already, maybe Ruben Amaro will pull the trigger and pay of fthe option fo rnext year of 5 million.

I did vote Flores....but only because it was the given option I preffered.  I would like to trade for Franlin without giving up Montero.  There has been some talk (not by Mets sites) that deGrom could get it done, or he and a lower prospect.  I am not sure - but no one has stepped up and offered a Montero prospect thus far.  The Mariners could keep Nick - they love reminding people that he has optinos left - but they are also in a win now approach and need both right handed punch from the OF or DH and stable starting pitching to complement the youngsters they are grooming.  I am not saying that the Mets match up on those demands but it suggests Seattle would listen to a package outside of Montero (who doesnt immediately help them either).

Maybe Nick isn't the long term answer at short but it is important to note that shortstop is actually his naturall position, not second base, where he was forced to play most of last year.

I'm really surprised how many people are interested in Flores playing SS everyday.  The strength of the team is starting pitching.  They must have strong infield defense.  Murphy and Flores up the middle is not the formula.  Thy have to get a guy in here who can make all of the routine plays, and make some that aren't.  When routine outs turn into infield hits, because our SS or 2nd baseman can't get to the ball fast enough, it extends innings and as we have seen, when the Mets allow an inning to extend, they almost always end up paying for it.  Get a Major League Shortstop in here to play everyday.  I don't care if he's not much of a threat with the bat.

Tthe Cubs have Baez, Bryant and Alcantara all coming up very soon and they occupy, 2B, SS and 3B. This coupled with the Cubs need for pitching should be enough for Alderson to at least see what it would take. I think a package of Montero and Plawecki is a nice conversation starter and could possibly net Starlin Castro.

If Sandy made all his moveos bases on the polls here, we'd be talking world series right now!

I'm only half joking.

If you want something decent you have to give something up decent. With that said I would borderline trade Placweki, and Montero for Owings.

Im not sold on trading Montero for Franklin though.

@Ron Davis I don't think they would move Castro to 3B considering they have the 8th rated prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America in Kris Bryant. The other option for Castro could be 2B, but they also have a highly rated prospect in Arismendy Alcantara at that position as well.  The Cubs need pitching and we can offer that to them...Castro is only 23 years old and I think Alderson should look in that direction.

@Sean Arnell  How does anyone really know Flores cant play ss. They said Ripken couldnt playthe Mets put Turner at ss Flores is better than Turner. Give him 10 games!!

95% of player evaluation is done during workouts and team drills? They don't need to use Flores in ST games to evaluate his ability to play the position. If they felt both were capable on defense, the ST games might be used to judge how they deal with some pressure.Flores was never going to be the everyday SS,they just wanted to see if he was capable enough on defense to be used as a utility backup.Dont you think if he could play SS every day they would use him over Tejada, who has just fallen apart. They are trying to win games.

72tilltc

@Zach Goeringer  The Mets dont want to face the truth they fear Flores will be good and then will command big bucks. They would rather keep players down. This way all the fans can point to 2015 as the year they forget they were pointing to 2104 when Sandy arrived next year it will be 2016.

Joseph DeFazio

@Zach Goeringer  I definitely agree that RT is showcasing how weak of a position the Mets are in at SS.  It is absolutely going to drive the price up to make a trade with the M's or Arizona.

franklin can hit. They say he can play there without hurting too much.  Hes a tejada who can hit. Range is overrated, look at jeter

@Luis Torres Quiñones  the combination of Q and Tejada last year was almost a -2.... Drew was >3.  Based on that (and based on Tejada's spring there's no reason not to) it's a 4-5 win swing which is worth more than 12 mil on the market today....

@Brandon Butler Brandon, Flores has played there for years and this is the same team that stuck Duda in left.  There is zero reason to not give him an opportunity.  We heard the same stuff about Murphy and quite a few terrible players took 2B reps before him.

@lindro88  We aren't winning anything this year. We also do not have any other capable starting SSs in the minors. What's the big deal of letting the kid show what he's got? I'm really surprised at how many people would be willing to throw a 2 year deal at an aging, injury prone SS with 70 year old man knees.

Zac Tindall

It would take montero plawecki degrom and Wilmer to get Castro or atleast 3 of the 4

@ChrisNYG Actually if the Mets were to sign Drew it would cost them one prospect, they would have to forfeit there 3rd round draft pick and would also loose draft money.

@72tilltc @Sean ArnellAgain, stop overvaluaing our own prospects. EVERY scout projects that Flores can't play shortstop. And even if he could at least carry himself there, what's the guarantee that he can hit in the majors?

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@Zach Goeringer Yes I watched the game. So he looks stiff so we abandon the idea after a few innings? Tejeda hasn't exactly been a gold glover this spring, in fact he has looked awful. Again I say I'm not promoting the idea of Flores as a starting shortstop, I'm saying don't float the idea around and make it a position battle if you aren't going to play him there in meaningless spring training games.

JoMama

@thehat and through what, a 80 game season?  do the math, he's not worth 12, not even 10

@Zac Tindall If d'Arnaud doesn't pan out we are going to wish we held onto Plawecki. Then we will be in the same position with catcher that we are now with shortstop.

@Nick Squatrito @lindro88  Right on.  Also, what's the point of having DiceK toss even one pitch?  Mejia AND Montero are both ready right now and since we're not a WS contender, why waste valuable learning time for no reason?

@Zach Goeringer Agreed. Its not like our situation has changed at all since October, we could have been grooming him since then.
