Opinion: The Mets are Keeping their Options Open

In the last 12 hours, FoxSports.com, the New York Post and the Daily News all reported that, while the Mets would like to sign free-agent RHP John Lackey, they will also pursue, and are more likely to sign, one or two starting pitchers from a group that includes Joel Pineiro, Ben Sheets, Jason Marquis and Randy Wolf.

By the way, be aware that Yahoo! is running a story that paraphrases the New York Post as having said, ‘Sheets is apparently at the top of the list for the Mets this off-season.’  However, the Post report does not say this at all.  Instead, the Post reports Pineiro is at the top of the team’s list, with Sheets simply among the group of middle-of-the-rotation starters being considered.

Nevertheless, I always find it interesting when three different media outlets report essentially the same story, with the same players being mentioned, citing roughly the same type of sources, all within a few hours of one another.  I will not believe it is a coincidence.

The thing is, I don’t think anybody really knows what the Mets are going to do, or can do, this off season.  They may think they know, and they may end up being right.  But, today, right now, I think it’s all just logical speculation, with a hint of direction from a source.

I say this, because, one day there is a report talking of how the Mets will spend money, the next day another says they won’t, which is followed by a report saying they will pursue Lackey, which is followed by reports that say they won’t, and then others are published saying they’ll do both, i.e., pursue Lackey and a middle-of-the-rotation starter, while others say they won’t.

Well, which is it?  Nobody knows.  I don’t think this means reporters are being duped, nor do I think it means the Mets are clueless.  Instead, I think it means what it should mean, which is that it’s early in the off season, the Mets have some money to spend, there are a lot of options and different ways to go, with more free agents likely to hit the market in four weeks, and so there is no point in rushing to make a move for the sake of making a move.

I mean, if Omar Minaya wants to sign Lackey, or he wants to trade for a pitcher, it would be wise to signal he is open to signing more than one of Pineiro, Sheets, Wolf and Marquis, who he also may genuinely be interested in.  The same can be said for Matt Holliday, with Jason Bay also on the market, and players like Carl Crawford and Jose Guillen maybe available in trade.

In short, I believe the Mets are simply keeping their options open, which is exactly what they should be doing.

If only the rest of the team showed as much heart.  It seemed this fire had gone out of Hamonic this year IMO and tonight he looked more like the guy in last years playoffs.

By my count, New Jersey has six men on the ice. If Carter's involved in something, where's the penalty there?

24 seconds earlier and he plays Sunday instead of being suspended? Great rule.

Anyone could see that the Islanders diamond penalty kill leaves the far side guy wide open. They got burned twice on it. I'm. Time to let Poulin play I would have played him Tonight over Nabby after how Nabby played against the Leafs. Everyone forgets before that 6 goal nightmare for Poulin, he was playing pretty well. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the next Bobrovski; hopefully management can see what I see. One more thing I would trade Strome, his game doesn't translate to the NHL level.   You will all see this when he doesn't do much for the rest of the season.

So the refs don't call the charge on Carter which leads to Hamonic taking matters into his own hands. They called a charge on Clutterbuck earlier which was bogus but what Carter did was fine.? Amazing

@Brian Thomas  i cant believe what i just read....poulin has the potential to be the next bobrovski, and strome should be traded because at age 20 and 180lbs, his game hasnt fully translated from AHL to NHL success? i would much rather have snow be my GM then you based on these ridiculous comments.

i bet you're one of the guys bashing snow for trading nino too

@Brian Thomas  Poulin played 28 games and was horrific or did you just get cable or something?

@Brian Thomas  Yeah Strome is washed up, he's played like 10 NHL games, and after all he is 21 or so, time to trade him for a 5th rounder.

Yes agree 100%. Very questionable calls. But like I said he just defended his team. I say call up cantin see what he can do. This team needs to do down swinging. Hey go get gillies back. Pry mcgratton from Calgary and just make a mockery of this league.

@dimaio34 Maybe.  But it's the league rules.  The suspension wasn't a judgment call - it was automatic because of the instigator penalty.  I don't blame him, but you can't argue that he went out of his way.  Had Hammer not had to come all the way from the other end of the ice, it's probably just a roughing or fighting, not the instigator.

Yes I did. There are still six men on the ice. If you are still on and the puck hits you, that's a penalty. That can only mean that your man shouldn't leave the bench until you are back on it yourself. He left himself in play. The refs don't call it unless you somehow find yourself part of the play.

Ryan Sweeney
Ryan Sweeney

@bossy4ever  thats not how changes work in hockey.  he was by rule off of the ice.  if the puck had hit him, yeah it would have been too many men..but it didnt.  a guy can be several strides away from the bench when your replacement gets on the ice as long as you are not playing the puck as the guy coming off.
