Opinion: It’s going to be a difficult April, Mets need to be strong

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

This is not good. 0-3 is bad. I know it’s early, but look at the schedule. I’m afraid it may get a lot worse before it gets better…

The Mets next play the Reds at Citi Field, after which they travel to Atlanta, Anaheim and Arizona for nine consecutive road games in different time zones. They return home for a nine-game home stand, which includes the Braves and Cardinals, after which they go to Philadelphia.

There is a distinct possibility at this point, even if playing as well as they can, the Mets could begin May with a 10-17 record.

Atlanta Braves v New York Mets

The good news is that these match ups will be behind them and the schedule will get easier. I know this ground can certainly be made up in the remaining 135 games. I hope it happens. However, I also know this city, I know how we behave, I know too well how local media can pounce on a narrative and beat a thing to death before it ever gets a chance to find new life.

This Mets team better have tough inner strength, a lot of focus and more skill than they’ve shown, because I have a feeling they’re going to need it…

it's going o be a difficult May, June, July, August, and September. I'm gathering the offseason will be long too. Also 2015,16,17,18.

Though I remain strongly optimistic about 2019, regardless of ownership.

LOL "A difficult April"...Yo Matt, it will only be "difficult" because the Mets are awful.  Whenever your schedule looks tough, its a pretty good indicator that you are no good.  Can you please look up which 27 game stretch of the season will be "difficult" for the Cardinals?  Thx

10-17? That seems like a pipe dream Matt

The METS are like the Walkig Dead of baseball :{ They are just trying to survive another bad season. Wait until next year. I am sick of this team rolling over infront of the home fans. I don't care how bad a team is, when you play at home, infront of fans that have spent hard earned money to attend a home game,  I don't care how they play, but, you have to have winning record at home.

The Mets terrible start reminds me of the beginning of the 1984 season when the likes of Mike Torrez, Dick Tidrow, Craig Swan and Bruce Berenyi seemed to be getting shelled everyday early on in the season.  That created opportunities for then young pitchers, Ron Darling, Walt Terrell and Sid Fernandez to be called up to the major leagues and eventually flourish.  Perhaps the Mets might take stock and consider cleaning out their bullpen this month and promoting their young, minor league pitchers.

1984 became a very exciting season once Darling, Terrell and Fernandez arrived.  Of course those Mets were an offensive machine.  But that's a story for another day.

Great signing Young 7.25 million.. If it wasnt for the Mets this guy would be lucky to get 1 million

Come on man... How, after the first 3 games can you seriously think they'll be 10-14 against that schedule!!!??? Do you have them going 5-4 on that trip???!!! I hope I'm wrong, of course I do... but you've only had to be a Mets fan for the last 6 years to know that they don't surprise you in a good way...

8-19 at best! and that's 11 under after ONE MONTH!!! haha.... can the Mets get me to the freakin Draft at least!!??

In general, I like the Mets strategy. They are trying not to hand out too many awful contracts and trying to develop their own players. This is good news.

But the state of the major league ball club is just unacceptable. The bullpen is a nightmare. I can't blame all the people who are saying they are boycotting the team.

Development is one thing, and it's a good thing, but complete neglect of the major league roster is not ok. If you want to hold onto your prospects to develop them, that's a good thing, but then you HAVE to spend cash to get some real major league players on the roster. Granderson was a start but just a start, and may not have been the smartest signing anyway.

But we have no acceptable first baseman. No acceptable shortstop. And, I'd argue, at least one outfield spot without an acceptable player. I'm not saying you need an all-star at every position, but average would be nice.

Geez.

60 wins maybe 70 but that's all I see sorry I've been a mets fan since the 70s and they'll always be my team but who the hell is scouting these players Stevie Wonder. C'mon now enough is enough.

The Mets have done it! They made early April feel like its August and they're playing out the string. Congrats!!

10-17? HA HA HA. They should be so lucky to finish 10-17 this month.

Same ole story, every year. What happened to the new strength and conditionening coach to avoid such injuries?? We live in one of the cities with highest priced tickets, and cant even afford a couple decent relievers. Change the topic and put attention on something different. I cant even afford to bring my son to a game for the team ive been loyal to since 1970!!!! SAD,SAD,SAD

44 yrs of wasted time, and what have the Mets done for me? Made me depressed.

I hope Sandy called Boras about KM and SD at some point tonight. No they don't help the bullpen, and yes we still don't get near 90 wins, but at least they are major leaguers and who knows, maybe the bullpen at some point turns it around, and you have a product you can actual watch.

One of the most upsetting continual comments to me is "We gotta see what _____  can do."  Fill in the blank with your favorite Met of the last several years....Lucas Duda, Ike Davis, Ruben Tejeda, Omar Quintilla, etc.

The definition of insanity is continually doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Sorry but this Mets fan since the beginning has tuned out I was at opening day No more $ to the Wilpons from me until they spend some on the team. No more excuses and no more promises. It's time for results Sandy. This is your team.

I think the Mets will be cold until June when Syndergaard gets the call. They always seem to rally around a new guy when they show up (i.e.. Harvey two years ago and EY Jr. last year). That being said, the Mets will be a 70-79 win team, and hopefully get the answers they need this season to prepare adequately for 2015. The questions needed to be answered are the following:

1) Is Tejada their shortstop of the future? If not, they should go out and sign a guy like Asdrubal Cabrera.

2) Will Davis or Duda hit enough to be everyday first basemen?

3) Is Colon a 2 year guy or 2014 trade bait? This is obviously based on the projections for the 2015 pitching rotation.

4) Can Travis d'Arnaud hit at the major league level?

5) Which of the young arms are solid bullpen pieces?

A Yankee fan friend today asked me why the media doesn't get after ownership more, saying that if the Yanks were in the same position the media would have a field day and run the ownership out of town.  I thought about it for a minute and I had no answer for him.. the media should start.

Still think that Sleepy Alderson should contact the Texas Rangers and see if the can trade for Moreland who lost his job to Prince Fielder, he may just want to have something to prove in a new city, NYC!!!
Another point, i wonder if DUD-a "earning" the job might mean a trade is in the works involving Ike?

Matthew-

How can they play nine consecutive games in different time zones, when there are three games in each city?  If two trains leave Chicago, one carrying Mets pitchers to surgery, and the other carrying watermelons, which one has a better chance of winning a ballgame?

JC
JC

Going into the off season, the two main needs were solidifying SS and 1B.  Neither was done and the team predicts 90 wins.  The bullpen could not be worse.  The defense aside from Lagares is terrible.  Through three games the only decent things I see from this team are starting pitching and Lagares.

@Olerud42 You can fix this without spending a ton just contact Boras for Drew/Morales asap. With those 2 you can really charge up the fan base while the season would be saved...Wont happen.

Brian Webster

@Tom Batton My sentiments exactly! Cerrone meant this as a negative nightmare scenario article laying out their upcoming schedule and then he throws out 10-17 as what their record could be after April? I literally laughed out loud! They are already 0-3. So 10-14 over that stretch is as bad as Matt thinks this team could do? Talk about delusional and wearing rose colored glasses.

@Paul Wesolowski "Prevention And Recovery" - the big Jeff Fredo Wilpon program. What happened? Did that go away with all the fundamentals drills? Bunt practice for pitchers?

@Jeff Steinberg  I know the answers t your questions. 1) No  2) No  3) Trade bait  4) No  5) Maybe Familia, the other 6 are not young and are awful

@rubiconx0  I was thinking the exact same thing about Ike, because naming Duda like that this early after proving nothing makes NO SENSE at all...

JC
JC

also, if they want to show the fans they care, cut/trade Duda and Ike, sign Morales.  Not going to make us win 90 but it would show the fans that they realize a 3 man platoon is a complete joke.  Thinking the 3 man platoon would work is like trying to trade 3 garbage players for a star in fantasy baseball and thinking it wouldn't get rejected.

Uri Bloch

Cut Turner??? Save 1 million what are they doing????

JC

@John Paul Cullinane @rubiconx0you are talking about a team that tried to use a 3 man platoon at 1B, I wouldn't let "making sense" be part of evaluating a move the mets make ;-)
