Opinion: I like the Subway Series

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

I like the Subway Series. I try to deny it, but it is pretty fun.

The games do not mean more than when winning or losing against a team from the NL East. But, it’s still a fun time. The media attention, the near sell outs and the general stadium buzz is refreshing in May, when it’s easy to say, ‘Eh, it’s still early,’ and, ‘There’s still so much baseball left to play.’ These statements are true. However, even if it’s manufactured and mostly for the fans, it’s nice to inject a playoff atmosphere here at a time when it wouldn’t otherwise exist.

“I don’t know if it’s New York, but it felt like a college football game out there tonight. Like a big party,” Mets OF Chris Young said after Monday’s game at Yankee Stadium.

According to SeatGeek.com, fans bought about 3,500 tickets on the secondary market for Monday and Tuesday compared to 1,200 tickets in the two-day period before the first game there last season (WSJ, May 14). In addition, multiple reports indicate YES ratings were up for both games, which will probably also be the case for SNY’s broadcast on Wednesday.

It’s easy to talk about how the Subway Series is overrated it is, or how it isn’t the same as it used to be. This may be true. But, if you were at Citi Field on Wednesday, often shoulder to shoulder with Yankees fans, shoulder to shoulder with Mets fans, it certainly didn’t fell meaningless and insignificant. People were in to it, and so was I.

So far in the past 24 hours we learned that Matt likes the subway series and that he thinks the fans are jaded regarding the farnsworth $ issue.  He has not had the time over the past few days to discuss the Saul Katz story or Juan Lagares playing time.  I guess those things are hard to write about when you have little Jeffie Coupon looking over your shoulder

I love the subway series because the games are nationally televised! For the  "out of market" fans (like me) who cannot afford the mlb package, its great to see the team!

this would have been a solid title for an article if it were a 10 year old's book report

It's nice to hear more noise from the stands but it has turned into just another series. It's nothing special anymore.

I've never liked inter-league.  I only want to see the American league in the All-Star game, and the World Series.

I like New York in June, how about you?

I enjoyed it last night because people were kicking back, having fun, and just enjoying the game.  In years past there was way too much dick-ish behavior on both sides of the game.  People roaring over every strike like it was WWIII.  Fans acting like their team winning was some kind of life affirming statement about their value as a human being.  There was just a cool feeling last night, people laughing, posing for silly pictures, and having a good time.

Perhaps motivated by the realization that neither of our teams are doing bupkiss this year.

Tonight theyre gonna give Jeter a gift. He'll probably whiz on it, right on the field. Thank goodness we have subway series.

OPINION: Subway series is a trap

I've never liked the subway series.  Because pretty much since it's inception the Mets have played the underdog foil to the yankees popular QB/homecoming king.  If the Mets won it was a cute story of overcoming odds and if they lost it was expected.  The fact that the games aren't sold out anymore even though the series has shrunk by 2 games a year, I think illustrates we fans' disinterest with it now. Bring back the Mayor's Trophy game...

One series a year. Alternate stadiums. Maybe winner stays home for the next game for some extra spice.

I wasn't surprised at the capacity crowds in Yankee Stadium but shocked to see so many empty seats in CitiField. I guess the fanbase wants to send a message to ownership to fix the club and fix it fast. By the way, I love the Subway Series especially when our Metsies win. Lets Go Mets!

bring back the " Mayor's Trophy" make it like the Stanley cup...each year either the  winning mets or yankees get inscribed on the cup and could be displayed in each teams museum until the other team wins the cup.

"the near sell outs..." lol. Remember when it would sell out. People are figuring out that while it's sort of manageable to sit in that toxic atmosphere for a few hours, unlike Philly fans, yankee fans don't go away, so they stick around all year and theyre obnoxious. Series is lame.

But at least we helped YES's or My 9's ratings...pfft

After the Mets won the first 2 games in Yankee stadium, I DID NOT HEAR FROM ONE YANKEE FAN.

After the Yankee win last night, I received several calls and emails from all sorts of Yankee fans, telling me how the first 2 games "really didn't count" because anyone can hit in Yankee stadium, and that last night's game in CitiField was the game that really indicated who the better team is overall.  Why are they like this?  Are there any other fans in sports like this?

Hey Cerrone....whens that opinion pieces coming on the NYT article that alludes to your boss losing control of the team....lots of metsblog comments on it....just wondering when we can expect your opinion.

I don't believe Chris Young has ever been to an SEC Football game if he equated the crowd noise to a CFB game.  More like a Rutgers game.

Beating them is not worth possibly losing to them in the regular season. Theyve mastered baseball economics so they want to sell tickets as much as anything, so a few loses rolls right of their backs. Plus Wilpons use the series as a vehicle to embarrass us mets fans, however they can.

Still think its unfair that the rest of the division doesn't have to face the yankees 4 times a year (used to be 6 times before 2013)

The Yankee portion of Monday and Tuesday's games were on WWOR Channel 9 (produced by YES), as the Mets games were on WPIX (produced by SNY).

Facts are silly things.

@Michelle Sparno  Dumb way it was done! Should have been done at home plate before the game so ALL the fans could enjoy it.

@C.K. Dexter Haven  Not sure even the mayor's cup is necessary anymore, unless there's some charity implications. If that's the case, play a team featuring hulk hogan and Stallone too, why not.

@grillruben  At most 2games, and really it'd be better to just play the Cubs one more time.

When the met's owners aren't a subsidiary of the Stienbrenners or whatever the hells going on, people can suggest expanding it.

@Father Dooley

1 - Didn't count? If the Yanks miss the playoffs by those 2 loses at Yankee stadium, just ask them, if those two loses counted for anything.

2 - Why are they like this you ask?  You mean obnoxious and self-entitled? There probably are similar fans in other cities but likely not NEARLY as annoying.

Unfortunately, the constant drumbeat of 20-whatever championships, perpetuates their superior feeling.

Meanwhile, with two rookies starting tonight, that will be a more fair test of which team is better as the moment. BTW, last seven against the Spanks, Mets have won 6, Yanks one. Keep that in mind.

@nwmets @72tilltc  Actually I care about the news, the lineups and opinions of real fans. It is stupid people with bad assumptions that are a waste of oxygen.

@Will Keesee @shea

A.) When did Cerrone post his opinion (as i clearly called for) when all knowing one did that happened? I know he posted the article but it was mysteriously lacking an opinion and....

B) no the guy (Katz) did not deny it...a mets spokesperson denied it.  Please, if you are going to argue, utilize facts when doing so. The New York Times is not the Daily News or Post....its a respectable paper that rarely runs trash...if they ran it there's likely some truth to it. (or at least more truth that typically comes from a mets spokesperson)

Its the best hope fans have had since Irving Picard and yet this great fan has no opinion...

@Will Keesee @cmetsfan  I agree with Number 1, but who cares about number 2. I hate the yanks as much as the next Mets fan, but they win and win often. You can argue their tactics and how they deplete the farm system and spend "recklessly", but it's not your money and they seem to win regardless of how they spend it.

@72tilltc "You like the Wilpons Sandy and Terry."

That's a bad assumption right there!

hankincolo
hankincolo

@hankincolo Try this. Go to the Mets' website. Call up the game they played in Yankee stadium on May 29th, last year. Mets scored FIVE runs in the first. Lots of hits, some sloppy fielding by the Yanks. NEAR the END of the highlight reel, marked as, Ike drives in two with a single...

Look for the Girl wearing a white headband over her black hair a few rows up, first base side. She is absolutely exasperated over her Yanks getting whacked. I can only imagine it was the game turning ugly for her and nothing else that was annoying her.

To me, her reaction smelled of, ...what? This can't be happening to MY Yankees. Yeah, sweetie it was happening...and you wasted, or your Dad or Mom wasted hundreds on that obnoxiously priced seat.

cmetsfan
cmetsfan

@Joseph DeFazio He's full of it. Their fanbase outnumbers us like 3-1 and they outdraw the mets in attendance, and they've been accumulating mass championships for  generations, especially recently. Their franchise is probably worth 4billion and I wouldn't be surprised if they literally own the Wilpons.

Wilpon's are operating at a big loss too. Of FANS!
