Opening Day lineup; Cowgill every day CF; Turner or Lutz for last spot

Collin Cowgill 3 polaroidTerry Collins announced his Opening Day lineup:

1) Collin Cowgill, CF
2) Daniel Murphy, 2B
3) David Wright, 3B
4) Ike Davis, 1B
5) Marlon Byrd, RF
6) Lucas Duda, LF
7) John Buck, C
8) Ruben Tejada, SS
9) Jon Niese, LHP

Collin Cowgill will be the Mets everyday center fielder, Collins told reporters. He will not work in a platoon.

The outfield will be Lucas Duda in left field, Cowgill in center and Marlon Byrd in right field, according to Collins.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis has made the Mets roster as an extra outfielder.

The final roster spot will go to Justin Turner, unless he lands on the disabled list. The decision on Turner will come tomorrow after the team’s workout. If Turner goes on the DL, Zack Lutz will make the team.

This certainly gives the Mets the best defensive solution — that is something Collins was concerned about without Nieuwenhuis. But the lack of a platoon could prove to be problematic against the tough left-handers in the division, and make it difficult to navigate matchups in the later innings as well.
