Off-field, business rumors, and what to do or not to do

Matthew Cerrone , Lead Writer

I’ve lost count of the number of e-mails, reports, and tweets sent to me over the years (some citing sources, some totally anonymous, some straight from people involved) saying what is or isn’t going to eventually happen to this team’s Ownership – be it good news, bad news or barely news. I have seen people who seem right (with no sources) and people who seem wrong (with great sources). And, trying to keep up with who is, has been, might be and isn’t wrong, right or credible has become exhausting…

The thing is, eventually, some day, be it one year or 10 years from now, we will know definitively what happens, because the story will be written with an actual beginning, middle and end. Until then, it just doesn’t seem fair or fun to post each individual rumor every time one pops up. If I did that, it’s all that would ever be on this blog and it would be impossible to determine fact from fiction…

Therefore, ever since the Madoff case was settled – when readers made quite clear to me they prefer baseball news here to business news – when it comes to off-field, business-related stories, I wait for the team’s beat reporters and city’s financial reporters to swarm as a group before I post something. In other words, if they are silent, I’m silent… like tonight… so I can focus on the hot stove (or not stove, depending on how you look at it).
