Now who is the team to beat?

miniMCavatarMatthew Cerrone: In 2006, the Phillies finished in second place, but 12 games back of the NL East Champion Mets. Nevertheless, a few months later, Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins proclaimed the Phillies “the team to beat in the National League East.” The Mets mocked his quote during Spring Training, six months before blowing a seven-game lead… to the Phillies.

“This year, tell Jimmy Rollins we are the team to beat,” Mets OF Carlos Beltran told New York media the following Spring, weeks after his team acquired Johan Santana from the Twins.

The Mets eventually lost the division by three games to the Phillies in 2008.

Today, six years later, the two teams begin a three-game series to end August, and kick off September, fighting to stay out of last place…

In fact, the standings are the complete reverse of how they looked on the final day of 2008…

“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans,” John Lennon once said.

This feels extra poignant today when looking at the state of this division.

I believe the Mets and Phillies are both now the team to beat and pad your record.

If the season ended today, Washington would finish with the best record in the NL for the 2nd time in the last 3 years. it's safe to say they're the team to beat in this division.

I feel like Bill Murray In Groundhog's Day The past 5 years are exactly the same (and boring) We all know the team will not be good. Are told differently. Team struggles offensively in the 1st half hangs around before collapsing.

Collins, Manuel say the same thing day after day, Month after Month, as does Wright, Sandy, Fred, etc.

Sandy has done a good job building the Farm System. Two things I don't like. 1) Why did they draft High School kids in the 1st round for 3 years when they had no position players on the farm or money to spend. 2) 2015 looks to be another year of failing to play .500 ball. (Why did they not trade Reyes?) Who is looking forward to see Granderson in Right field tonight

Wally Backman was just named PCL manager of the year. Congratulations Wally!!!

This I'm going to say is messed up but I think it will be the only way we free ourselves of TC. I hope the Mets finish in last place in the division and possibly own one of the worst records in baseball. Only then, and maybe, will Alderson make the move and fire his behind.

To paraphrase John Lennon:

The Mets are run by insane people with insane objectives. We're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think all Mets fans are liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.

It pains me deeply that the long season has come to a battle between the Mets and Phils for last place. Great piece in today's NY Times by Powell on the current situation at Citifield. Sure, hindsight is 20/20 but he is making points that nearly every one on this site (myself included) has been belaboring for the past six months. If Sandy signs Jose Abreu, Nelson Cruz or Jhonny Peralta we are, in all probability, a .500 team. Instead, we got Chris Young, Omar Quintanilla, Kyle Farnsworth, Jose Valverde and the wrong Abreu.

As long as Washington is stacked the way that they are and they continue to have Rizzo at the helm, they will be the class of the division. The Braves will never surrender as that is a well run org. Something dramatic would have to happen for the Mets to win this division any time soon. Especially when they have owners that can't afford it right now and a GM (to me) really does not care about winning and is doing what he was asked to do which is keep payroll under control

The Phillies also went on to win the World Series in 2008. You can't even compare these two teams.

when all is said and done i think the mets will only have better record then rockies and arizona .but collins is a good manager and deserve another chance lmao

Well, not the Mets. That's for sure. And unless some major upgrades are done on the offensive side it will be a bit longer before the Mets can become "The Team To Beat"

Well the Phils are a bad team, but we are the Mets. Say hello to last place

sandy i agree managing is more then wins but if your saying that collins is getting most out of players then we are really worse then our record. btw we might be in last place after tonight.so if this is what you call players playing for manager we nned mor then a SS and OF  we are like 5 players away if this is max effort but the truth is the players aint going all out for terry so he has to go.

The Nationals.  And it has been that way for a couple of years.

It's too bad the Mets didn't go all in on the rebuild 2-3 years ago when they should have and instead lied and acted as though they were still trying to win games.  If they had done it correctly they would have traded Reyes and Wright.  Now they will use Wright, Granderson and Bay as an excuse not to send money.  Their pitching staff better be lights out next year or its going to be another long losing season.  Very discouraging to say the least.

I would think every team we play should be the team to beat?

A series loss to the Phillies and we are in last place.

Great job to Sandy "Smoke & Mirros" Alderson and the rest of his highly paid worthless GM staff!

LAST PLACE!

@drmetfan I dont feel Alderson has the passion to bring the Mets back to respectability. I think he is here to do a job which was trim payroll and he has done it.....

Terry will be here for the next two years....no matter what the Mets do

@Kenneth Meltsner How about if he signed Choo, Drew, and Beltran?

Hindsight is indeed 20/20.

If we signed Abreu, the we don't figure out the Duda is a huge asset at first (and making $1m this year).

And after a fast start, Cruz is batting .204/.270/.380 in his last 73 games.  Are you confident that the real Cruz is the one with a 1.000 OPS in his first 56 games or .650 in his last 73?  It'd be nice if we had him this year, but I'm still OK with Sandy not signing for the four years that Cruz originally wanted.  He's 33 and already bad defensively -- he's played more DH than OF this year.  And we don't have a DH.

BerryBeltran
BerryBeltran

@Kenneth Meltsner and people suggest Sandy has improved this team greatly...I honestly think he does not have both feet in the door in regards to winning. He was hand picked to do a job by Bud Selig which was help the Mets slash payroll after they got hit hard by the Madoff thing.

@grillruben Well, you kind of can.  They rose that much higher, and fell that much further.

@jojo218

To be fair it's not like we have a manager in our organization that is having any success. Or a guy that has ties to the team and is a fan favorite while leading one of our minor league teams to success. Nor do we have a guy that was just named manager of the year in the highest level of minor league ball and has clearly demonstrated he is ready to be a major league manager...

@matt greco  Whats so great about promoting the fact of once being very good to now being like crap?

@nwmets More smoke and mirrors to hide the real issue here: this team stinks and Alderson and co DO NOT know what they are doing.
