22-year Mets pitching prospect Rafael Montero threw live batting practice today…

He’s created quite the buzz down here. The front office has been mentioning him to lots of people, because I keep hearing the same story from everyone I talk with. They love his arm, but they also rave about his command. He locates well, works both sides of the plate, and so there is confidence he’ll progress with ease by not walking lots of hitters.

Today, he was watched Jeff Wilpon, Sandy Alderson, Terry Collins, J.P. Ricciardi and Bob Geren, and plenty of media and fans.

His four-seam fastball is hot. It zips. Travis d’Arnaud and Jordanny Valdespin were often late and seemingly impressed. But, he’s also raw and a bit scrawny. I’m not totally sold. I want to see him against upper-level hitters.

He only has limited experience in Single-A. It sounds to me like he’ll start this season in Double-A, and could see Triple-A by late summer. Clearly, one year from now, he’s going to be the talk of camp…
