Jordany Valdespin

Valdespin, Quintanilla, Hefner, Turner, Atchison non-tendered

Omar Quintanilla, Jordany Valdespin, Justin Turner, Jeremy Hefner and Scott Atchison have been non-tendered by the Mets, meaning each player is now a free agent.

The Mets have trim a projected $4 million from their 2014 payroll by cutting these five players from the 40-man roster, which is now at 35.

Teams had to decide by midnight Monday whether to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players.

I’m surprised the Mets cut Hefner and Turner. Hefner will miss all of 2014, but he is still under team control and could be useful in 2015. Sure, the Mets need roster flexibility and it saves them about $500,000, but they could have always gotten that roster spot back later by putting him on the 60-day disabled list. Turner is a fringe player and he is replaceable, but Terry Collins really liked him, he is a good clubhouse presence, and he has shown to be a versatile and capable player off the bench. It’s also possible he comes back on a lesser deal. It’s also possible both players could return on minor-league deals.

The Mets like Quintanilla and Atchison, so they could always try to re-sign them for less money than they would have earned in arbitration. This is a very common move around MLB this time of year…

There had been rumblings this past September that Ike Davis was a candidate to be cut, but that seems highly unlikely a) given his surprising value on the trade market, and b) because he’s going to earn a lot less next year than was anticipated this past summer.

9:05 pm: Hefner and Turner were non-tendered by the Mets. Hefner will miss all of 2014 with Tommy John Surgery.

4:57 pm: Valdespin has been non-tendered (Rubin), even though he wasn’t arbitration eligible until 2016 (Carig).

3:10 pm: Atchison is interested in returning to the Mets, but intends to explore his options (Ackert).

2:25 pm: The Mets could non-tender more than just Quintanilla and Atchison, a team official said (Ackert).

1:45 pm: Atchison has been non-tendered (Rubin). TheMets have already shown interest in bringing him back, but an offer hasn’t been made and he plans on testing the free-agent market (Castillo).

1:42 pm: Quintanilla has been non-tendered (Castillo).

6:20 am: This table lists each Mets player eligible for salary arbitration this winter, their service time, 2013 salary and projected 2014 salary from MLB Trade Rumors…

Player Service Time 2013 Salary Projected 2014 Salary
Daniel Murphy 4.1 $2.9 million $5.8 million
Ike Davis 3.1 $3.1 million $3.5 million
Dillon Gee 3.0 $527,000 $3.4 million
Bobby Parnell 4.1 $1.7 million $3.2 million
Eric Young Jr. 3.1 $490,000 $1.9 million
Lucas Duda 2.1 $520,000 $1.8 million
Scott Atchison 4.1 $700,000 $1.3 million
Ruben Tejada 2.1 $514,000 $1.0 million
Omar Quintanilla 4.1 $500,000 $900.000

According to MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes, 202 other players are currently arbitration eligible.

Dierkes anticipates the following position players could all be in risk of being non-tender: Daric Barton, Tyler Flowers, Chris Getz, Paul Janish, George Kottara, Lou Marson, John Mayberry, Travis Snider and Drew Stubbs.

This team better start opening the bankbooks and fast, as they promised, or they will be losing a shitload of fans this seasons

I did like him, but a poor attitude effected his baseball, disappointed we trade him for a prospect at least instead some team will get hits for free.

they just got Chris Young, there's no need to empty the bank account on a pure pull lefty that won't hit more than 10 HRs per year in Citifield.

Too immature. There's a lot of talent there but's being blocked by the kid's immaturity.
