Nieuwenhuis over den Dekker because of Chris Young?

In the wake of releasing Bobby Abreu, the Mets chose to promote Kirk Nieuwenhuis over Matt den Dekker because he is more used to be being a bench player, Mets GM Sandy Alderson told reporter Adam Rubin (ESPN, Aug. 6).

Den Dekker is hitting .331 this season in Triple-A, including batting .436 during his past 10 games. He has just 25 strike outs in 161 at bats in Las Vegas.

“He’s swinging the bat really well,” Alderson said of den Dekker. “Obviously we’re cognizant of what Matt’s doing and we’re pleased about it.”

Alderson told Rubin he might wait for September call-ups before promoting den Dekker to the Mets, as opposed to demoting or releasing a current player to make room for him on the 25-man roster.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

I’d rather watch den Dekker than Chris Young. The Mets are six games under .500 with 48 games left, they’re 29-34 in games when Young is in the starting lineup, he’s batting .206 this season and roughly .200 since the middle of May. What can Young possibly do in the next 48 games to better justify his roster spot and contract? More importantly, what has he done in the last 250 at bats to suggest the next 100 will be any different?

I’m all for veteran leadership on a young team. It’s important. But, it’s not more important than rewarding good performance and fielding the best possible roster. Den Dekker is 26 years old. He’s always been incredibly gifted in the field, as good as Juan Lagares. However, den Dekker has worked very hard the last four years to finally be doing what he’s doing with the bat.

Den Dekker was knocked as being a fourth outfielder, one-way player. Well, he’s on fire in Triple-A. I have no idea if he can hit this way in the big leagues — in fact, I have serious doubts he can. However, he should be rewarded with an opportunity, while in a hot streak, to see if his adjustments and hard work can finally translate at the next level. And, because Young’s presence is forcing the need for a bench player, Alderson is choosing the more appropriate player for that role, Nieuwenhuis, as opposed to den Dekker, who has most recently been the most productive of the three… and that’s a shame…

I am pro Sandy and what he has been doing, but CY experiment has got to end and while I don't think Den Decker is the answer to anything long term, he is going to help us win more games this year than CY is and will get some reps in the Major Leagues which can help him for next year and beyond.  This move makes no sense to me.

I've probably been watching Matt play longer than anyone here.  Since he was 11 years old.  The kid is for real and is a great athlete.  He has worked on things and continue to work hard to improve his weaknesses.  Give him a shot.  Bring him up NOW.

Oh yeah, if they're promoting from AAA, make sure to bring Wally along also!

Really, why bother? If MDD is called up, Tc will have him firmly implanted on the bench just like Flores. Leave him in AAA so he can at least play.

What leadership can a guy barely hitting his weight (If it was colon it would be one thing) and has totally deteriorated as an outfielder possibly provide?  How to keep your head up after receiving a contract no other team would possibly give you and haven't earned a dollar of?

It would be awesome if some disgruntled met employee leaked the true reason for keeping Young this long.

There is no possible way any other team was willing to give this guy a contract close to what the Mets did, let alone a major league contract.

Right now, Neiwenhuis and den Dekker are both better players than Chris Young. Whatever CY was capable of in the past has expired. Lets hope Sandy addresses his future with the Mets before next season.

At this point, Tejada is almost a better option offensively than CY in LF.  That's how bad CY has been.

Total BS, for a team that's been shutout 10 times, scored 1 run or less in 20 of there losses and 2 runs or less in 30 of there losses, how in the world do you not promote the hottest hitter in your organization who also happens to be one of your best defenders, denDekker should be starting in the OF right now, let Kirk be a bench player but this team needs hitting desperately and your $20 million a year investment has a sub .390 slugging pct and what the hell is Tejada still playing over Flores who at 22 years of age one of the best AAA hitters over the past 2 years is sitting on the bench, TC is obviously not the guy but you can argue a case for SA plus he is a fellow Marine and some of the moves he has made have been solid but no moves at the deadline and denDekker not being promoted and Flores still on the bench, come on Sandy stop with the BS, I was born at night but it wasn't last night!

There are 7.5 million reasons why Chris Young is still on the roster.  Fred & Jeff simply do not grasp the concept of "sunk cost."

I wonder if the reason Kirk N is here instead of den Dekker is because the Mets didn't want to completely pick the 51s apart prior to their playoffs.  We took Flores, deGrom, and Carlyle, we might take Montero,  maybe the Mets saw Kirk and Matt somewhat similarly and decided to take the one that had a bit more success in the majors (since they both bat left, I don't see any point of one over the other).

Yes, I would have pulled up both, and DFA'ed Chris Young.  I'd rather see Kirk and Matt play in August games, when they still count for other teams...

"Mets chose to promote Kirk Nieuwenhuis over Matt den Dekker because he is more used to be being a bench player"  And exactly how does this philosophy apply to Wilmer Flores, Sandy?  I have no problem with organizational pholosophies, but they should be CONSISTENT, and not change from player to player.

Ha!  CY is NOT in the lineup today:

CY is Jason Bay all over again.  The Mets obviously aren't crazy about their options if they let him go -- if it's a choice between bad at $7.5M versus only slightly better for nearly nothing, why not try to squeeze as much value as you can from the sunk cost?  I'm not crazy about it but I understand their thinking.  It's all moot in a few weeks anyway -- he won't play much in September and won't be re-upped for next year.

The more reporters ask Sandy about Chris Young, the more he digs his heels in out of stubbornness.

I'd definitely rather just throw a glove on wilmer and stick him in left field.

Such a typical Met organization statement that they protect a scrub, do nothing overpaid player while the young promising player gets to rot in the minor leagues.  He's 26 years old.  When is the right time to find out.  This organization has no idea how to run a franchise and I have to believe that Sandy has given in the the Wilpon philosphy of don't cut guys you have to pay anyway.  They don't want to field the best team that gives them a chance or hope to win.  Can you imagine another organization that has AAA players killing the ball but we can't bring you up because the GM promised a guy batting 200 on a good day his at bats.  We don't care about winning right now.  You wonder why the fan base is disappearing and attendance is down every year.

I'm a big fan of Sandy, but the CY situation needs to be handled. Those AB's that are being wasted on CY are so important for young players and their development. With a kid up in the show playing in CY's spot you let him play, allow him to fail and rebound. His numbers will still be better than CY's. If Wilmer was starting at SS and denDekker was in left I would be excited to watch whole lineup.

@Evil_MrM Or possibly they are scared to expose Den Decker at the major league level when they will be trying to include him in a deal over the winter?  IF he is terrible with Mets, does that decrease his value, which is clearly inflated playing in Vegas (see also Danaurd, Flores for inflated numbers).

This was said in the past by Sandy about the playoffs. But it was about getting players experience in playoff situations.

Please play more young players and less players named Young.

Evil_MrM

@Doubleday  I see your point, but the reason we have Flores here is to be a backup utility infielder (a position his talent is wasted at) rather than bring up Omar Quintanilla.

We have lots of backup outfielders on the club, but no backup infielders (Campbell doesn't really count, does he?  Do you really want him to play SS?).

Flores can go 5for 5 with 5 homeruns and still will be benched tommorrow with people saying he is a defensive liability

Evil_MrM

@darkknight  I'd rather throw a glove on you and stick you in left field, I doubt Flores has EVER played a game in OF in his professional career.

We have better quality OFs available, both on the team and in AAA, as long as they're not named Young...

@cpamerica5 What is a sandy fan. He owns the longest losing streak by a GM in the history of baseball. His signings are terible other then a roid Byrd he has signed no one good. Rice was his claim but he was exposed. He didnt even shed payroll allowing contracts to expire or releasing players early is not creative.

Hererra and Black for Byrd and Buck could end up paying huge dividends for years to come, this 20 year old kid is a future all star, if you have not seen him play you will in spring training next year, he is that good. Wheeler for a Beltran rental, another one that will be huge for years to come. Drafting Nimmo, Smith and best of all Conforto were all solid picks and Snydergaard as a tossin with dArnaud was as good as any of the other trades mentioned. Although Wright is not performing up to contract standards, SA had no choice but to sign him, he also made the right call on Duda and signing Colon and Granderson were not bad moves although they have underperformed so far, trading Dickey, tough call but the right one, especially for we got back and letting Reyes walk rather then paying $100mill plus was right to, would have been hard to justify trading him during the season when he won the Mets 1st batting title, there are more moves that I can mention but no need, SA has helped rebuild a mess that he inherited but keeping TC in place is wrong and I question not giving this team another bat at the deadline to give them a fighting chance to pick off a WC spot and if no move then give your best AAA guys a chance to play everyday and that would be Flores and right now dendekker!

Charlie Hangley
Charlie Hangley

@hashburry  True.  But they're not really saving anything per se by waiting this long.  Young's getting his 7.5 either way.  If it were me, I'd have sent him packing after he sabotaged a potentially outstanding catch by Lagares on Monday afternoon.

Mark Rakentine

@hashburry @Evil_MrM Flores was signed at 17 and has hit at every level. There is no evidence that Vegas inflated his numbers....especially since now he never plays.

Evil_MrM
Evil_MrM

@Mike Herrington @Evil_MrM  I don't disagree but, without EYJ, this is a really slow team.  Wasting a bench spot for what is amounting to a late-game pinch runner is ludicrous, but it's where we are...

@semperfi All the moves you mentioned were ok as far as stars with his picks most of them wont make it those are odds Omars guys are the styars and Omar Got Dickey Signed Beltran Niese Gee Lagares Duda Harvey deGromm Montero Flores  those are moves.

hashburry

@Mark Rakentine @hashburry @Evil_MrM Vegas inflates everyone's numbers.  It is not a some kind of aberration.  It's like Colorado, just a fact of life.  I would guess that MDD or Flores never hit .340 anywhere else.  DenDecker has been up before, and didn't tear it up at the major league level.  It was just a possible, if not plausible theory as to why they haven't brought him up.

@Evil_MrM @Mike Herrington But EY can't hit. If he could hit, he would be a good addition to the team. But as they say, "you can't steal first."

Evil_MrM

@Doubleday @Evil_MrM  He's 23 and playing in AA.  If the club still thinks he has a future, should we wreck it by having him jump two levels and stick him on the bench? (Yes, I know we did last year, but we were in much worse shape last year...)

@cpamerica5 @Mexpert Pagan terrible Beltran good the non trades are the killer Reyes. I am unimpressed with trading a cy Young pitcher for a head case injury prone catcher with a 220 avg the worst arm ever and i believe leading the the league in passed balls Not to mention he cant catch.Yes I know Thor blah blah blah he hasnt pitched an inning yet. Look what the sox got for Letser Rental and Price Garza etc. Sandy is terrible he always was if not for roiding up Smoke Steward Whelch McGuire Canseco and the rest of the A's he has nothing.

@Mexpert @Karl Leopold how far do you want to go back?

2011 - released Castillo & Perez,

signed FA's Hairriston and Harris, Isringhousan

Traded for Allen Dykstra (AAA hitter now), traded Beltran for Wheeler.

Traded Pagan (yes that one did not work out)

Mexpert
Mexpert

@Karl Leopold @Mexpert Anyone can release a player That is the stupidest argument ever. A good Gm is creative and can trade them with other more attractive contracts the way the Marlins and Reds Sox did. Allen Dykstra???? why dont you mention the the ex draft choices from Sandy and Depodesta they got 2 firstbasemen this spring ex Padres that flopped. That's all they do and Dykstra is not a MLB player and never will be. Wheeler is ok but look what the sox got for Lester  and TB for Price and Garza. You cant compare. Who is HARRIS??
