Niese and Hairston likely headed to DL

Following tonight’s 9-4 defeat to the Phillies, Terry Collins told reporters Jon Niese re-injured his rib cage muscle, and may have to be placed on the DL.

“We don’t have the luxury of skipping him,” Collins explained. “We have a double header coming up on his next day, so we’re probably going to have to disable him.”

Niese originally tweaked his back on an awkward swing while striking out last week in San Diego. Collins expects two starters will be called up for next weeks double header and according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the possible candidates are Miguel Batista, Pat Misch, and/or Chris Schwinden.

In addition, Collins stated Scott Hairston pulled his rib cage muscle as well, and may have to be placed on the DL as well.
