Nick Franklin Rumors: No recent talks between Mets and M’s

The Mets and Mariners have not had substantive talks regarding SS Nick Franklin since December’s Winter Meetings (NY Post, Mar. 15).

The Mets have been scouting Franklin most of the spring, while also monitoring competition between D-Backs SS Didi Gregoriusand Chris Owings, multiple sources told columnist John Harper (Daily News, Mar. 12).

The Orioles and Rays are also interested in Franklin, sources told Jon Heyman, who says, “The likelihood of a trade somewhere seems strong at this point (CBS Sports, Mar. 13).”

for the people that want Starin Castro I think the package needs to start with D'Arnaud and im fine with that as long as it doesn't include Montero or Syndergaard. So basically what im sayin is:

V.black &DeGrom or another comparable piece for N.Franklin

D'Arnaud DeGrom Matz and Wilmer Flores for Starlin Castro

have no clue what to offer for Didi Gregorius (looks like Chris Owings won the job)

also im not a fan of trading Plawecki, i have a feeling he might end up being better than D'arnaud

I'd be fine with a V.Black and Degrom package for Frankiln.  I'm high on Franklin, I think his bat is legit and I have a feeling he's a good enough athlete to handle SS for at least a few years. If Seattle is looking for guys who can help them this year V.Black can make their bullpen right out of spring and DeGrom possibly mid-season

If we passed up a deal in early December Vic black for Franklin then that was a HUGE mistake.

Also wouldn't read too much into the fact there haven't been discussions between the Mets and Mariners on Franklin. The Mariners have had scouts in Port St. Lucie just about every day this spring, and I'm sure they had extensive discussions during the winter meetings. I bet they know what the parameters of a deal might entail, with the Mariners having a list of prospects to choose from and so forth. It's becoming obvious the Mets need to do something with the shortstop position. Rolling with Tejada and Quintanilla just isn't cutting it, especially when first base (what should be a big-time hitting position) is also littered with questions. If Tejada opens the season at short, that's an epic fail for Sandy. Still have no idea why Flores hasn't gotten extended time there. These are spring games that don't count. Now is the time to give him a look. If he sucks (like he probably will, hence the position change), no harm, no foul. Not like Tejada is giving you anything offensively or defensively these days anyways.

So you're telling us that the rumor is that there is no rumor?? Ty

This team doesn't need another question. We have more than The Riddler's costume.

I felt that before the season that we needed a number one starter and three players equal or better statistically than Wright. (about $120m payroll would buy)

Don't think that we are going to be close....

So either most of the question marks need to produce or I will have another season with the best landscaped yard, because there was nothing to watch on TV or reason to go to CitiField!

It would be nice if the blog had links to player's stats like it used to

Id like to see the Mets pull the trigger soon on a ss. Give the guy a couple weeks to settle in before the team comes North. Personally a young Dback ss would be nice. We need a  true ss that can run, play defense and play good fundamental bb.

Franklin will be a nice player , but he is a true second baseman.

Can you imagine an infield of Duda, Murphy and Tejada (or Flores) ? That would be a disaster.

Today's news is that there is no news.  Check back tomorrow for more news-less news.

wilmer needs to start at AAA, let us all watch tejada do sub par hitting with around average defense.  wilmer will be at ss by the deadline no doubt, the team needs his bat in the lineup.

Based on scouting reports I've read, Franklin is no more a true SS than is Flores. Why trade for him before giving Wilmer a chance?

I read this morning that the A's are short of SPs, with two of theirs injured and likely to miss OD, if not more. With our excess, why is there no mention of going for Lowrie? He'd be my first target.

@nsmooth I highly doubt that was the trade. If Black was involved, I imagine another piece would be going to Mariners from Mets. And Black also might just be Cerrone's speculation as well.

@bill metsiac finally someone on this blog gets it. Why are we looking at average players in Seattle and Arizona when we can get a legit candidate for one of our "elite" pitching prospects.I know the A's are saying they are keeping him but they have a logjam at short and they always keep the cheaper one. I would love to have a leg up on signing Lowrie next year...

@bill metsiac  I've heard he's still a slightly better fielder than Flores, and has a little more potential. But I agree... If you're going to trade for Franklin, might as well just try out Flores there.

Are you joking? Davis hit .205, Duda hit .223, and Murphy has been playing second for one year. Shortstop is our only question mark???

@Bud Britton @bill metsiac Does anyone have any faith that this team would be able to sign Lowrie to a longterm extension? If you go get him and give up say a Montero for him, you'd better be sure you can sign him longterm. The way this team nickels and dimes everything, you'd be trading a good young pitching prospect for a one-year stopgap at shortstop. Not wise.

@Eric Cartmenez Franklin isn't great at short, but he's very good at second. Still, it's not like Tejada is very good defensively or offensively. Let Franklin play short for a year or two and then slide him over to second if a better option comes along. His offense is much better than anything they have.
