Recap: Jerry on Reyes, Niese, Pagan & Tejada

Jose Reyes will play in a Florida State League game tonight, Jerry Manuel told reporters before tonight’s game.

Manuel said, if everything goes well, Reyes will return from the disabled list on Saturday.

He said he hopes to get six or seven good innings from Jon Niese tonight, keeping his pitch count below 105, which would give the Mets a good chance to win.  He says the Marlins have trouble with left-handed pitching, so it’s a good match up for Niese.

Angel Pagan is getting the start tonight in center field, because a) Gary Matthews Jr. played the entire extra-inning game last night, and b) he does not want Pagan too ‘far removed from daily activity.’  Also, with Ruben Tejada in the lineup, he would prefer Pagan hit leadoff.

Manuel said he looks forward to watching Tejada tonight.  He says Tejada has good instincts, and agreed that he is capable of being a major-league second baseman.

Henry Blanco will likely be the starting catcher tomorrow.

Lastly, he said David Wright stole second on his own last night, with Jason Bay at the plate.
