News: Minaya and Mets have money to Spend

Yesterday, Omar Minaya told the New York Post that ‘he has permission from ownership to increase payroll,’ which the Post also confirmed with Jeff Wilpon.

“We’ve been told that whatever we need to do to get to help us win, we’re going to try to do it,” Minaya is quoted as saying.

Minaya also noted that while the number is limited, he has the ability to increase payroll with a mid-season acquisition if it is in an area on the roster that needs improvement.

Yesterday, Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors listed starting pitchers Jake Peavy, Roy Halladay and Erik Bedard, outfielders Matt Holliday and Vernon Wells and second baseman Dan Uggla among 14 players who could be available at the July 31 trade deadline.
