News: Mets Hire Jauss to be Bench Coach

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Mets have hired Dave Jauss to be Jerry Manuel’s new bench coach.

Jauss also worked as a bench coach for the Red Sox, Dodgers and Orioles.

Rosenthal says the Mets chose Jauss over Eric Wedge and Bob Melvin.

Jauss traveled to New York in late October to meet the Mets.

In the late 80s, while he was Field Coordinator of the Expos, Jerry Manuel hired Jauss to manage in Montreal’s minor-league system, where he was eventually named the Eastern League Manager of the Year in 1994.

Jauss has also spent time working for the Dodgers, Red Sox and Orioles, ranging in positions from first-base coach to bench coach to minor-league field coordinator.

In early October, Manuel told WFAN the Mets will first look internally for a third-base coach, and will consider Razor Shines and Sandy Alomar Jr. among candidates for the bench coach position.

Glad we are getting back talent + veteran leadership.  Great news.

The Later is very important in terms of development.

Oh this is great news. Just in time for the playoff push. Getting thes three back gives us the momentum. Can't wait. We will get on a streak now. Great news today. Also Donovan will be ready one day. Just his first season. Hard position to learn

Hope Lubo gets the rust knocked off quick. Really need him to help get the PP clicking now, not later.

not enough for me .. I'm not impressed

The disappointment with sending Donovan down is that the whole issue with the defense, in my estimation, is not that there's no talent here, but rather we have B-level guys playing A-level roles (see: A-Mac, Strait, Hickey).  If Lubo is back and indeed healthy, everyone can move down a spot, and Hickey can slot into Lubo's pairing and get back to where they were late last season.  That would allow A-Mac to move down to the #2 pairing, and Donovan down to #3, so it could be something like:

Lubo-Hickey

AMac-DeHaan

Donovan-Strait

And then when Hamonic returns - from what I read, relatively soon, probably before the break, you can move Strait into a 7th D-man role, drop Radek finally, and have Hamonic-AMac and Donovan-DeHaan as the bottom two pairings.

Figure that we're thin at D, so we would want Lubo, Hammer, and DeHaan, our three best, on different pairings so that they can be the eyes and ears of the weaker side.

I see no rationale in keeping Radek along - love the guy, and he's truly been a good soldier for this franchise, but Radek is just barely a step about Staios territory.

i hope garth surprises us and sends down martinek... man. our d pairings could be pretty solid....

hopefully more donovan then carkner and amac. could open up room to trade amac...

donovan had a better long term upside than martinek.  Should have kept him on the roster

Hopefully they're truly ready and healed. If so it will help a lot. Although a little too late. The isles have no chance of making the playoffs. The metro division is doing a lot better. Wins will however make the first round pick we give buffalo not as good. Unless we push off that pick to next year

Careful, that's a lot of positive thinking for one post. Wouldn't want someone to call you names now...

I agree with everything except strait. He's really shown me something since he's been back. I'm not taking him out of the lineup. IMO when everyone gets healthy its time to trade Amac. I don't think he's terrible like some others on here but I do agree with most on here that say he's not a top guy. I say trade him while his value is its highest.

Hammer-DeHann

Hickey-Vis

Strait-Donovan

Thats a much better looking D IMO.

@stumpy32 Really not bad pairings when Hammer gets back and replaces AMac who can then be moved.  Plug in Reinhart's name instead of Hickey next season and it only gets better.  Hickey may stick around as depth.  Sign Vanek, add a number 1 goalie and the team can win most of their games.

@Joey Ferguson I believe Martinek is on a one way deal and therefore, can not be sent down without clearing waivers!

csd21

@Max Rettig Maybe they are sending him down so he can play during the Olympic break?  Though, he is definitely better then Martinek and would probably gain more by staying.

vvmayshays

@isles23Too bad Donovan is getting sent down again.  I realize he makes mistakes buts he has a lot of tools and just needs more NHL ice time IMO.  We need to trade AMac soon.  He is the worst D-man out there every game.  Atleast Donovan is physical

Don22
Don22

@isles23I agree - I like Strait too.  He's nothing if not steady.   I would also trade Amac.  Let him try to get his big contract somewhere else.  I like him better than most, but if he stands in the way of some of the young guys - or going after a bigger FA then it's time.

@since72 @stumpy32 I like Hickey in there, I know he's small, but he's a plus 9, there is no other player, except Vanek who is equal to that on the whole freaking team.  Why does everyone hate Hickey??  He's also 2nd on the team in points for a defenseman.  He's young, but getting stronger, and could be a solid 2nd or 3rd pair D

Darren Breton

@since72 @stumpy32 since72 you make it sound so easy to accomplish everything you said.  Vanek would have already signed if he was interested in staying long term.  Vanek already stated he's gping to free agency at the end of the year..It's disappointing but you need to be a realist that Snow will trade Vanek at the deadline for whatever he can get.  Teams knowing that Vanek being a UFA with ties to the Minnesota Wild, won't give up too much for rental who wants to play for the Wild.  Getting rid of Amac is a forgone conclusion with his $5 million contract demand, but then you have to insert another rookie into the lineup to replace Amac? Getting a #1 goalie won't be easy at all.  Knowing all that watch how it all plays out in the summer.  I won't hold my breath on Vanek and #1 goalie coming to fruition.

Don22

@rmreturnsI think it might really just to get Donovan more minutes.  When Lubo and Hammer are back where does he slot in? As 3rd pair what is he at then? 12 minutes?  I think they want him to get top pair minutes at AHL so they can concentrate on giving de Haan the NHL minutes.  Just my guess.  I do think he'll be back before long.

icegirldad
icegirldad

You may be right can't hurt sending donovan down

Don22
Don22

@csd21@Max RettigYes, he has a better upside - but right now Martinek is the more reliable option.  Especially with Vis coming back and Hammer coming soon thereafter, his minutes are going to go down.  Right now they are better off concentrating on deHaan and getting him the minutes to grow on what so far has been a decent start to his NHL career.

@Ryan Sweeney@vvmayshays@isles23

I disagree, on both points actually.

I know AMac has his fans, but he has extremely poor hockey sense (IMO) and does not get physical with the opposition... ever.  I really can't stand that.

Secondly, Donovan skates just fine, however his anticipation and ability to make quicker decisions needs work.  Where he is good enough in the AHL, he lacks in the NHL.  He needs to "get up to speed" (NHL speed) by getting more reps up with the parent team.  Most of his mistakes look rushed.  He needs time up here, not much left for him in the AHL.

Ryan Sweeney
Ryan Sweeney

@vvmayshays @isles23 definitely not the worst out there, and  donovan needs to work on his skating before hes fully affective in the nhl.

@Joey Ferguson @mrcisback @Don22 @isles23  Its just amazing Joe that we just can't come up with a decent young goaltender that can stand on his head once and a while and steel us a game or two. If we had a Bishop or Snyder we would be sitting in the 4th spot right now with about 64 points with 35 less goals given up.  All those games that we lost by 1 goal or that went into OT would have been wins. We must of given up at least 7 or 8 open net goals also.

mrcisback
mrcisback

@rmreturns @mrcisback @Don22 @isles23  I agree with that rm. I'd ask teams for the moon and see what i can get. I also read and someone also posted it yesterday that the Islanders are going hard after Ryan Miller again. I'm not crazy about trading for a player who might be here for 20 to 25 games unless its contigent on signing him first.

Joey Ferguson
Joey Ferguson

@mrcisback @Joey Ferguson @Don22 @isles23 see what it takes then.... rask is 26 and is a very solid goalie for boston... can probably put together some sort of package. and jeeze. cant belive rask is only 26 seems like he has been around forever doesnt it?

mrcisback
mrcisback

@Joey Ferguson @mrcisback @Don22 @isles23  Bostons best goaltending prospect is Malcolm Subban. I don't know if Boston would let him go. This kid Spooner is very fast and skilled. Joe Morrow is their best defensive prospect.

Joey Ferguson
Joey Ferguson

@shlo @Joey Ferguson @mrcisback @Don22 move him to wing or trade him.  nelson and strome have long careers ahead of them and seem very strong as centers. not saying they wont be moved but look at nelson lately.... no way they should move him from center.... and it seems they have there mind set on keeping strome as a center

isles23
isles23

@shlo. I was in the party that thought maybe we should trade him but now I'm not so sure. Every player is different and some development takes longer than others. Not saying Frans hasn't been a solid player most of his career but his game has taken a noticeable jump up this year. IMO he's gonna be one of those guys thats actually gonna be better on the other side of 30, so I say hold onto him and when everyone is ready he can assume the role he's meant to play as a top checking center.

Joey Ferguson
Joey Ferguson

@mrcisback @Don22 @isles23 i wouldnt take it. take there best goaltending prospect and a mid to late round pick. prob gonna cost a little more then amac but that what this team really needs. we have our future centers in strome nelson jt and cizikas...... with pleanty of other talent to surround them. no need for another forward or dman with all of our young talent just about ready to start playing at the NHL level by the middle of next season

mrcisback
mrcisback

@Don22 @isles23   I read yesterday that actually the Boston Bruins are looking at Amac real hard but since he's only 27 it will take more to get him. Theres no way the Islanders give Amac 5 million a year. If you want Amac it will cost Boston at least Ryan Spooner.

since72

I don't hate Hickey at all. It is merely a commentary on how much better the D will be next season if people stay healthy. I would actually like to re sign Hickey because injuries will happen and he will play plenty if he is here.

I have not seen anywhere that Vanek has stated that he is going to free agency. Can you provide a link?

@vvmayshays@Don22@rmreturns at trade deadlines, 2nd rounders hav been traded for 3rd pairing defenseman (ian white, murray, etc.) and i think amac has tons of value for big teams bc of his cap hit. snow can really get alot for him if he tries

vvmayshays

@Don22@rmreturns

I hope they can trade AMac and get a upper mid level draft pick (2nd or 3rd)

Free up some space and get Donovan more time in the NHL
