Lucas Duda missed Friday night’s game after being hospitalized with a stomach flu or food poisoning. SS Wilmer Flores and reliever Gonzalez Germen were both unavailable for Sunday’s game due to illness, as well.

Terry Collins is close to making Jeurys Familia the team’s closer, he told reporters after Sunday’s win >> Read More.

Multiple reports indicate Jenrry Mejia may soon move to the bullpen, with either Daisuke Matsuzaka or Rafael Montero taking his place in the starting rotation >> Read More. Terry Collins said Friday that Mejia could end up being capped at around 120-125 innings this year.

The Mets promote Triple-A 1B-3B Eric Campbell on Saturday. Omar Quintanilla cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to remain with the Mets at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Hey, remember when the Mets were 16-12 and in second place? Me neither, despite it being only a week ago.

“Losing sucks,” David Wright said after Saturday’s game. “We’re just not getting it done.”

I know it’s early May, and maybe it’s the back-to-back-to-back losses by one run that is getting to me, but this past week felt like a total nightmare >> Read More.

People, please stop commenting that Alderson should have signed the likes of Choo or Abreu or Drew...its lunacy to think Alderson had that kind of money to spend.  Go look at the contracts for these 3; Drew wanted something like 3yrs 30M.  Combined with the other guys (including Hawkins) and your talking about 2014 payroll of 50M instead of the 33M the Mets actually spent, with the life of the contracts amounting to close to 231M instead of the 88M the Mets spent.

Alderson has done a piss poor job with the bullpen, for sure, but he wasn't going to be allowed to spend more than 90M payroll they have this year, so if you want to get on Alderson, please offer better options that would have cost 33M or less this year.

Regarding Mejia, he may be struggling to get through the 5th, but he clearly has better stuff than everyone on the staff right now, and it is clear he doesn't want to blow his arm out in the bullpen, so why not do something smart for a change and send him back to AAA or maybe even AA where he can work on figuring out why he only can go 4+?  The absurd inning limit on him makes him almost useless at the big league level anyway, might as well try to figure it out where wins and losses really don't matter.  Although it can be argued they don't matter in Queens either.  If they put him in the pen, they will lose him psychologically, that is pretty clear.  I actually feel bad for him.  He has been jerked around for almost 4 years and he is only 24.  With all the love for guys in the minors, Mejia has at least proved he can thrive at the major league level, even with all the idiotic management of his development by the Mets.

What do you think this team would have looked like if this past off season the Mets had done what most fans wanted...

Signed Choo

Signed Drew

Signed Abreu

Re-Signed Hawkins

Traded Duda / Davis for anything

This team would have been so much more competitive and fun to watch, I just can't fathom how the highest paid front office evaluates this talent.  If their hands are truly tied by Wilpon, then why are the 3 even there?  They haven't done anything to help us.

I'm no Doctor and maybe somebody here has some medical knowledge, but when Lucas got sick Friday (from who knows what) and had to visit the hospital, common sense would dictate, they'd tell him stay home and rest, but nooooo, he's on the bench looking like crap and now we read two other guys are sick? WTF in spades!

So  the METS went 3-7 , an, we are supposed to be excited, they went from second place and 3 games over 500 to last place, and we are supposed to be excited? This is typical METS play, and, this is what they have to change The Braves lost 7 games in a row, but, they are still in first place :}

I am still unsure of this "hunting for strikes" organizational approach to hitting. However, I do know what I see. I see time and time again guys watching first pitch fastballs being grooved right down the plate. I'm an idiot and even I know to not get in to an 0-1 hole and miss what is usually the best pitch you are going to see.

I'm not so sure that hasn't affected Flores and TDA. TDA to me at times looks almost confused and takes so many first pitch fastballs. Baseball is an extremely difficult game that gets to your head. Why make it more difficult to young kids coming up? Keep it simple! Go up looking first pitch fastballs and to do damage. If it's a ball, take it! Especially for a kid like TDA. Young catchers have it much harder than position players. He has to worry about a whole pitching staff and calling a game, managing the pitcher, etc. Just let the kid do what he's always done, just go looking to do some damage.

I just hate this passive approach. Too many times guys are working from behind in the count and are now defensive instead of being aggressive and confident.

Sigh. we need EYJ in there.  His speed is what makes things go.  It just seems to add more life to them. I do not know why and I am not happy about it, but i think it is a must after seeing them the past 10 games. I admit to believing that i was wrong.

Depending on who else is in the lineup, i would go (and i do not care that he is not a power bat, he hits and i want him in position to drive in runs and not table-set so Murph is my cleanup guy)

Our lineup needs help.  It is just not deep enough.  I want more speed though in 1 and I want Muprhy in a position to drive in runs.  He is the most consistent hitter I have and he is getting extra base hits. I want him driving people in. I am losing runs with him at the 2 spot, ideal or not.

I think it's to soon to give up on Mejia. If that light bulb goes on and he can extend his starts, Mejia could be our best pitcher this season. In the meantime have Dice K ready by the 5th.

Let the young guys pitch and work out there kinks this season in the majors. If Montero or DeGrom struggle in their first six starts is it a failure? Time is needed for these guys to adjust. Usually teams can do this in increments as to not overexpose young talent, but we don't have that luxury. Infuse the youth.

Again, Matt ... check the records ... they have never been 16-12 ...

Can't stand the way these modern day ball players celebrate after one win - esp after having a dreadful week...

You mean no one wanted Omar Quintanilla?!?

hankincolo

@hashburry I generally agree with you. Better stuff?  Depends on the day. The minors might be the better way to allow him to learn to pitch beyond the 6th.

I wonder if that was the discussion when it came down to him or Dice-K as the 5th starter. At this point, perhaps Dice-K should start again while Jenrry M. learns to last longer.

@SufferingMetsFan  It may have looked like a major league ball club.  Can someone ask Alderson how he thinks his scouting of Abreu grades out now?

@bingmets  I actually hope they crap the bed.  The Mets are like an addict.  They have no idea what rock bottom is, and everyone that cares about them, the fans, make excuses and keep hoping they get better by some miracle.

helloboy

@bingmets  I do not think we will.  This is shaping up OK.  The Yankees are having injury issues.  Just gotta keep Texeira and Jeter in the yard.  They are not playing so hot either right now.  I would love to get the first L on Tanaka's record.

@hankincolo   You usually get food poisoning from eating food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or parasites. However, if you have food poisoning it is possible to pass those germs to someone else.  As an ER doc, I most definitely would have told Lucas to STAY HOME.  He didn't and we had Flores and Germen go down.  Mets don't seem to handle this type of issue well, do they?

helloboy
helloboy

@hankincolo  Actually, i hear that they are only sick to their stomach about having to watch the team play everyday live.  It is starting to cause the logical result in them too, which is vomiting.

metdrama

@Tarheel11  There was a game earlier in Arizona when they faced Arroyo and the entire lineup attacked the first pitch, and they hammered him and won in a blowout.  Oddly, haven't seen that approach since then.

helloboy

@Tarheel11  If the team is "hunting for strikes", why do they take the strike when they find it and swing at the slider 5 feet outside?

pj10

@gregf  Yup. Ended April at 15 - 11. Lost three straight to go 15-14.. Didn't get win 16 until they were 16-14. Rough May going 2 - 8.

You guys have obviously never played and been through a skid like that, or won a game in a way that the team won yesterday. To go through a tough skid like they have, come back down 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th after suffering numerous 1-run losses, and than have a walk-off hit is exciting and can really help turn things around. How many time have the Mets forced extras and than had their bullpen give it up? That didn't happen yesterday and for a team looking to succeed that is a big deal.

I agree completely. 2-8 is awful. Sure you should be happy and maybe have a nice celebration/high 5 line, but to go nuts like you just won game 7 is downright dumb.

Pete Brilvitch
Pete Brilvitch

I understand what you're saying, but all teams do this. To be honest, I think people would probably criticize them more if they didn't celebrate.

hashburry

@Steven Matregrano  That's why I mentioned AA.  And Niese and Gee have been basically getting one more inning in before they are done.  And if you can't see that while he is going good, Mejia is more dominant than those two, you aren't watching.  Maybe he needs another pitch, who knows.  But since when is TC overusing a bullpen guy ever better than starting for his arm?

ken1010

@hashburry @SufferingMetsFan

Alderson and crew probably thought:

Choo - might not be good in year 7

Drew - not much better than Tejada

Abreu - it's a risk

If they really were going for it in 2014, and trying to get the fans back after years of losing, they would have gone for all these deals.  Minaya would have.

If Choo is too expensive in year 7, so what, he would have enough WAR over the whole contract to justify the expense. Beltran had a year lost to injury, but over the whole contract his price was earned.

Drew - I think he overestimated Tejada - thought he might hit .260 again.  Not happening.

Abreu - he probably thought one of Duda or Ike would step up, but they are nowhere near what Abreau appears to be.

You are right - these are three steps that should have been taken.  Of course, if the owners weren't willing to spend the money, that's the real problem.

No excuse for not signing Hawkins.

helloboy

@kefhrny17  Not really.  But if we win 3 of the 4 we get back to .500.  Again, being around .500 will keep us hanging around at the all-star break.

hankincolo
hankincolo

@hashburry @hankincoloI've heard that before, that it takes 2 or 3 days after getting a bug before you show symptoms. Food illness I suspect is something different, but when you consider how these guys share common space and need to be well in order to play you'd think the smart thing to do would be to protect the other guys by telling Lucas to go home. It's not like these guys a have a desk job and might be able to hide in an office.

@metdrama @Tarheel11  He throws garbage at 87 mph.  Take into account that more talented pitchers make the Mets look like children.  And even a blind squirrel finds a blah blah blah.
