MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets

Nationals and Giants are very interested in Daniel Murphy

The Nationals and Giants are “very interested” in acquiring Mets 2B Daniel Murphy, SiriusXM host Jim Duquette said early Thursday.

However, a deal between the Mets and Nationals is considered a “longshot,” according to reporter Ken Rosenthal (FoxSports, July 31).

The Mets don’t want to trade Murphy, but will do it if they receive enough in return, Jayson Stark reported last week (ESPN, July 25).

It was once reported that the Blue Jays, among others teams, would have interest in Murphy (Daily News, June 23), but may not feel he is strong enough in the field to justify the cost in trade (Heyman, June 24).

miniMCavatarMatthew Cerrone: The Mets have to listen. It’s all about getting better. And, if there’s a deal for Murphy that makes the overall team better, Sandy Alderson should consider pulling the trigger. I just don’t think that type of deal is being offered >> Read more.

I wonder on the Tigers Blog if they discuss on a daily basis trading Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez because they are at their peak trade value???

Trade Murphy while his value is at an all time high.  He's gonna ask for a lot of money after this year and I don't see the Mets paying him, nor should they with Flores in the wings who's much younger and cheaper.  Seems like every season around this time, this team has no clue as to what direction it wants to go in.  They probably could have gotten a decent haul from him, esp from the Giants who just gave up on the whole Uggla experiment.

NATS just got their 2B.Asdrúbal Cabrera

They'd better get a king's ransom before helping the Nationals out with Murphy -- Zimmerman's injury puts a big dent in their offense, and their current second baseman (Espinosa) is hitting .213.

Nats AAA OF Steven Souza looks like a good bet for righty power... might not be a bad  P/U in a package for Murph..would love to see Nats AAA Zach Walters come to us.. a SS with power..but I doubt they trade him..funny Walters is not in their top 10 prospects and Souza is number 10.[baseball America].

the Mets need to add players like Murphy, not trade Murphy.   Citi Field was is not a HR hitters park, its a line drive hitters park.  On top of that, Murphy has proven he can play in NYC. If anything, trade some of your major league starting pitching (Niese) for LF or  SS.   And look for speed as much as your looking for power.  Power is to expensive,  speed with gap power is cheaper and works better at Citi

Why? His defense sucks and he's def not a long term hitter.

It's amazing how many people say they want certain players based on what a stat sheet says. Before an hour ago most people couldn't tell me who played 2B last night for the SF Giants, but now we know they are four deep in middle minor league middle infielders. ..reading one article does not an expert make. If Panik was so good then why did they try replacing him with Uggla?

never saw a team act like 6 games out with a third of the season left was 15 games with the pitching we have we could win any game we play..

Murphy would rank in 8-11 rage of top 2B's.  see.....

http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/mlb/2nd-base/

This would put him in $9 million per year category. Would Murphy to solidify his financial future take a home team discount of $28 million for 4 years. Probably. Its about the number CY is getting this year. The fact that Mets have not yet even approached Murphy does not favor Murphy staying here.

SF needs experience for the playoff run. They have fours SSs or combinations of SS in their Top 20 according to MLB.com. I'll take two: 1) Joe Panik (2B/SS) who is 23 and playing in AAA. He's hitting .321 with 2Bs and 45 RBIs and only 33 Is in 293 ABs and 2) Matt Duffy (SS) who is 23 and playing in AA. He's hitting .332 with 24 2Bs and 62 RBIs. He's another Long Beach State product and has struck out 66 rimes in 367 ABs. We can play Flores at 2B, and then let Tejada, Flores, Reynolds, Panik and Duffy fight it out next Spring for the middle infield positions.

I just don't get it, even though my heart is in my throat whenever I see a ball heading in Murph's direction.

1) We need hitting. 2) Murph can play in NYC and is a fan favorite.

Maybe it's just a matter of listening to all offers or getting a handle on his value just in case one of our minor leaguers looks like a .300-hitting Gold Glove second baseman.

@Albert E Lewis Mets were offered Zach Walters for Murphy and Mets turned it down.

I agree with you keep Murphy trade Freddy and jeffy and stop making moves based on $$$$$$

Compared to other 2B's out there Murphy's defense the last two years is slightly less than average. He does not deserve "SUCKS" status. You have no one to replace him. You like Flores defense at 2B much better than Murphy? Herrara is not ready. Who you putting at 2B? How many 2B's are long ball hitters? How many have more HR's and Doubles than Murphy the last 2 years?  Cano $24 million per!

@mi  Exactly. This is exactly how many games we were out of first on this date in 1969.

Mets are not in a position where they have to make a trade right now. Others who are contending need to overpay and then you trade.

Thinking the same thing you would have to get Brian Sabean pretty desperate, plus considering that we have Herrera, and Flores In the farm I would be thrilled to do that

@Mike I heard we are trading Tejada for Mike Trout.

@Mike that doesn't sound correct at all, highly doubt mets would have interest in Rasmus...doesn' fit.

mike23
mike23

@xplr sounds about right, sad part is they are only a quality outfielder w/ some pop and a SS away from truly competing..you would think they would be looking to add those types, maybe they are not available right now but i'd love to see even some minor moves to improve this team, show the players they want to compete this year and try and make a run, not saying to go crazy or give up top prospects but a few moves would be nice to see to create a spark going forward this year.

mike23
mike23

@C Nerrie Murphy has improved alot at 2b defensively, sure he makes some bad errors at times but I feel pretty comfortable with him defensively, I expect him to make the plays and he even will throw in some really nice plays as well so although not a classic defensive wiz at 2b, murphy is a solid player, I feel confident in hitting as well as at 2b....improved so much from early in his career.

mets2891
mets2891

Yes he does, this season he has SUCKED as a defensive 2nd baseman.  He's regressed.

mike23
mike23

@Joseph Baffi @sjm25 agree, mets need some legit/proven/consistent players to fill out this team...outfielder and ss

xplr

@mike23 @xplr I would love to see it, but i honestly think there is no shot we will add payroll.

C Nerrie

I'm in Murphy's corner and I think it would be a mistake to trade him. But this year for the first time I've been a little uncomfortable with his defense.  He seems a little distracted in the field this year, and I'm hoping/assuming he'll get back on track.

Did you see Granderson unexpectedly flip a ball to him after one of the innings (last night or the night before), and Murph dropped it? But I want him on the team regardless, even though I think defense is hugely important.

Pete Brilvitch
Pete Brilvitch

@mike23 @C Nerrie  I'm not necessarily looking to trade Murph, but I don't see an improvement defensively. If anything, I think he's regressed. He's looked awful there at times.

mike23
mike23

@xplr @mike23 based on the last six years, i'd say you are correct, which is a shame. I'm tired of thinking about next year, how about they try and compete in the present for once.

Pete Brilvitch
Pete Brilvitch

@mike23 @Pete Brilvitch @C Nerrie  Struggled is probably being kind. I hate to say it, but he's probably cost us a few games defensively. He would have cost us the Friday game in Milwaukee if Duda didn't bail him out.
