Murphy wins Mets’ Heart & Hustle Award

Daniel Murphy is the Mets’ recipient of the MLBPAA Heart & Hustle Award, the league announced Tuesday (MLB.com, July 22).

The players’ association, including former and active players, vote on an honoree for each club who “demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game,” according to MLB.com.

A final winner is chosen from each of the 30 honorees as the overall recipient of the award.

Murphy was the Mets’ winner last year as well.

The overall award went to Dustin Pedroia in 2013.

He's a great guy Murph - love his determination. Also, he must be the best ever dad. Love his personality.

It doesen't matter how many awards they win the bottom line is that the Mets are way under 500.  So who cares about Murph and his dumb award that nobodys ever heard of

It's too bad Alderson hates hard working, hard nose players.

This trip ends with less than 4 wins, which seems very likely, and TC should lose his job.  Not because TC is the lone cause of this, but to hopefully light some kind of fire under this team.  This can not turn into the usual post ASG losing streak. This would make it at least 4 or 5 years in a row that they tank after the break.  That has to indicate a problem beyond just the talent.  They seem used to falling apart after the break.  The Padres series was a must for them.  They blew that..  Tonight they have deGrom going against a nice young pitcher, with Iwakuma waiting for them tomorrow.  They really have to win tonight, or this turns into a sweep, followed 4 games against a team that can rake in Milwaukee.  The Brewers have struggled, but they can wake up at any time.  They won last night, and I can see them having a field day on our Mets.

We need several Murphys to make this work. Sorry, I am not a fan of DUDA, TEJADA and most of our OF.

An excellent choice. Daniel Murphy always puts his all into playing this game.

I like Murphy.  He has heart, and hustles to make every play, even when there is no play to be made. You have to admire that.  Now if there was a smart baseball or heads-up judgement award, I'd quickly eliminate Murphy and Duda, think about the rest of the team, and probably give it to Wright, Granderson or Legares.

Good hitter. BONE HEAD in the field and on the bases.

There seems to be a lot of celebrating and recognition awards for a team that's 7 games below .500.

Good for Murphy. Now let's trade him while we can.

Forget heart and hustle, how about getting more wins for the team. We're dying over here.

good for h...wait, what? I frankly don't care about hustle if it doesn't produce results. he is a nice hitter, but not great because there is little slugging to go along and he couples below average defense with hustling into outs on the base paths.

don't get me wrong, I like Murphy, but this is a meaningless and pointless award that is not actually correlated with any results on the field

Build up that trade value.  LOL.

Talking about when they dont John. Everyone does not hustle. Go back and watch Met rewind. How do they know the throw is not going to be thrown in the dirt and not handled?

Is this for real?

These guys are pro-athletes - most of whom are getting paid millions of dollars.

Do they really need a participation trophy 3 months into the season?

Oh please, get out of NY and open your eyes. That last series in SD? They totally hustled the whole series...the Padres that is and most of the Metsies "hustle" as well.

Ahhhhh, I love the guy when he hits, but he is the worst fielder in the league. Not his fault, he's trying but he has NO range. That first run last night was all on him. Oh and BTW he is below .200 for July at the plate, so his WAR stinks

Michael Brett
Michael Brett

Then they should not play. Same as when we hear, oh this guy cant hit left handers. Well then you are not a major league player. So why are these players who are not hustling not told to hustle?

did u c his ups for that line drive over his head last week? and he is improving on the double plays as well...

@lindro88 so after a decent April, a swoon & then an upswing (a pretty usual up/down mediocre team record), they come back from the break to face a bunch of pitchers that are very good or who they basically don't know and struggle. THIS causes Collins to be fired?

They didn't "tank" after the break last year. They "tanked" in late August after Harvey went down, Byrd was traded etc.

@Jenrry Mejia  He's not a bad player.  Sadly despite his flaws, he is still one of our better everyday players.

trmetsfan

@ken1010 Agree...one of the reasons I love Murph so much is you can tell through his hustle and aggression how much he loves the game and tries so hard to win.   I don't think he is as bad as Duda though both defensively or with the DUH plays (and at least his DUH plays are usually because he's being aggressive unlike Duda who just does't have a clue)

lindro88
lindro88

Heart and Hustle, don't make up for his lack of D, and low baseball IQ. He isn't productive enough to be paid the kind of money he would require.  You don't hear of many teams stepping over each other to trade for him either.  I like Murphy, he's turned himself in to long term major leaguer, and by default even has an All Star appearance on his resume, but I would not want him as a core player on my team going forward.

James
James

I don't know that Murphy is worth $12m+ over 4+ years.  He is a nice player, but he can't field and makes a lot of 'baseball IQ" mistakes throughout his game.  I like rooting for him and if they can sign him to a team friendly deal that would be great, otherwise I don't think it is the end of the world if he is not on the team in 2016

@Macacawitz  Can't blame the Mets for one of there players getting recognized for something.

@drmetfan yes, let's trade one of the few solid hitters and have another hole.
