MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

Murphy will likely miss more than two weeks

Daniel Murphy likely won’t make his return to the team with much remaining left in the season, Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson said on Friday.

Murphy went for an MRI, which showed a “significant issue,” Alderson said.

The second baseman was removed from the game on Sunday with calf tightness. The Mets put him on the disabled list and called up 20-year-old Dilson Herrera from Double-A on Thursday.

If and when Murphy does his make his return to the team, Collins said his name will be on the lineup card.

Herreera is playing very well so far, but it still doesn't necessarily mean he'll be ready for the starting 2B job next year--remember how young and inexperienced this kid still is!  Another year in the minors, focusing on defense, might be the best move for him.  Then you can consider trading Murph and give Dilson the job for 2016.

Let's not ruin this kid's career by forcing too much on him too early.

I'm not sure why Murphy is always considered tradeable. The mets should look to build around him. He is a solid hitter and has improved as a fielder. His salary will grow certainly but I would much rather pay him than someone like granderson. Murphy will move on and have huge numbers outside citi field and the mets will struggle on offense as usual.

Ya just kinda knew with the great season Murph was having that something was gonna stop him from reaching 200 hits, right?

I think Herrera will hit... but just read 3 different scouting reports on Herrera.. all say 1 thing..not an everyday SS.. but 2b yes.

So is this the end of Murphy the Met? Just asking sports fans.

Their saying Murphy is out more then 2 weeks, with what they say is a significant issue....that's why the kid is here....just say Murphy is out for the year please....get it over with......even though Herrera is not going to be the 2b this year, it doesn't mean Herrera won't be playing SS next year and leading off...I would bet money that more then likely he will be....and if Plawicki is 2 years away, I can see DArnaud playing catcher the next 2 years, Wright convinces his buddy Cuddyer to come play LF for 2 years till DArnaud is ready to play LF and Plawecki is ready to catch. New additions Herrera at ss, Cuddyer in LF for 2015, rest of the lineup the same.

Aren't all available players, be they starters or not, listed on the lineup card? I smell a......conspiracy.

Plawecki hot in AAA Vegas average up to .296, he's not two years away.

Everything I have read about Hererra says that he doesn't have the range or arm for SS, but think he could be a good 2B in the Majors.

I was going to comment too. What a silly thing for TC to say.

If they can play flores and tejada at SS who are useless, then u can play herrera at SS, plus Herrera played SS in the minors for the Pirates. Even if Plawicki is close at AAA, if the mets really are talking about Darnaud in LF, he will have to go to the instructional league first and until he is ready Plawicki will not be promoted.

@anthony G. Decesare Flores and Tejeda are not very good at SS. The idea is to get someone who is.

BTW, Tejeda is not "useless" at SS -- he's decent enough as a back-up player at the very least.
