Murphy to DL, Dilson Herrera promoted from Double-A

Daniel Murphy has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a calf strain.

20-year-old 2B prospect Dilson Herrera will make the jump from Double-A to take Murphy’s spot on the roster.

Herrera entered Thursday hitting .333 with a .401 OBP in 274 plate appearances during 60 games in Double-A. He was acquired from the Pirates last August along with Vic Black in exchange for Marlon Byrd and John Buck.

“When you have a kid who plays hard, and knows his game so well, he’s not going to have a problem. He’s a package,” Single-A hitting coach Joel Fuentes told Toby Hyde earlier this season >> Read more at SNY’s Mets Minors from June 25.

And we're not allowing Thor to come up ? I like this move, but it would be very nice to see one or two starts under syndergaards belt before the year is out, if only to whet his beak for next year and break the " minor league funk " that the big three have all seem to have gone through.

Can he play short? I would love to see him and murphy in the infield. Murphy is too valuable to lose on this team. If Herrera can hit enough to be the leadoff man. Granderson can be moved down in the lineup. Murphy can't be traded away.

Has speed become so obsolete in the game today? Can't even find out how many steal Herrara has from his stat sheet.

OK,now this gives me something to still be excited about in regards to this team..Weird how Murph just kind of faded in to the background somewhere and now Herrera is here just like that.No real mention of how severe Murphs injury is,if in fact he's injured at all.

Congrats though to Herrera, played his a$$ off and made a huge jump from AA to the bigs ,the kid earned it.

Sandy thinking outside the box, I like it! Even some of the semi-literate side walk General Mgrs. On this site didn't come up with this one!

Rare move by this current organization. It gives some excitement to a lost season.

If this kid can hit Herrara then  the Mets will trade Murphy, Niese, Gee, Colon and tejada.......

Interesting article in Daily News. Travis d'arnaud to leftfield. Plawecki catcher......

I have a feeling somewhere right now, Sandy ALderson is smiling and drooling at the prospect of Herrera coming up here and teraing the cover off the ball.... cuz if (when) Dilson shows he can hit up here, we MIGHT start the season with Murphy, move Dilson through AA and AAA quickly, and look to trade Murphy mid season (with Colon is he's still here!), but i'll bet Sandy would want to move Murphy sooner rather than later and avoid that "crippling" 9 million dollar salary/raise....

WOW! Am I reading this right? A double A promotion to the bigs? That's a bold move on Alderson's part and I like it. Keith Law said Herrera has the potential to be an above average 2nd baseman. That's high praises for this kid. Now, he can also play SS. I wonder if he is going to see sometime at the position. Murphy, Tejada and Flores, the clock is ticking. If Herrera comes up and tears it up as he did in Double A, he might never go back down to the minors which means one or 2 of you will be gone.

In a related story Pirate fans are lambasting there GM for trading 2 ML's for 2 6 week rental's

Here is hoping that TC puts him and Flores starting for the next 10 days and and just lets them play.

Everyone should be aware that as soon as Murphy comes off the DL he is going back into the starting line-up and the kid is going to the bench.

Flores/Reynolds will be SS next year, Hierra 2nd base...

Murph will be gone....Tejada and his 2.1 million salary will be gone...Although Flores is not a SS so called, his glove has been better than expected in my opinion...And, he is nearly impossible to strikeout...they will start falling in sooner or later...

one guy from last Aug trade goes on DL with Black in a seperate move the other kid comes up . Kudos for showing you have a set after all Sandy. now play him Terry and move Flores to ss . we are about learning for the rest of season . Wins are nice but its about seeing what we have as well. I was happily surprised to hear it was Dyson but i would of also been ok with Reynolds .

I hope Collins is smart enough to bat this kid in the leadoff spot and not 8th!

So AA Herrera comes up, but Thor isn't even being looked at after the expansion date? Hmm....

Does TC live in Louisiana? I understand brain eating amoebas have been found in the water supply there, this may explain whats happened to our 90 win season.

Thats because its cheaper to fly from Binghamton than it is Vegas.

I guess this means Wilmers days are numbered. And if Herrara plays well so are Murphs. I like Murphy but we are definitely at the point where we have to do something big in order to move forward. The battle for last place is on and if they end up there the season is surely a disaster. At best it's a complete failure.

Can he play third?

Did they do this so Murphy cant lead the league in hits this year as they  hope it reduces what he will be paid in arbitration.  Proves again, this team will not spend... Murphy does have value...at a reasonable salary...He will be in his prime for another four or five years.. I fear we trade him, and he becomes this Mets version of Jeff Kent.

We are turning in to the Tampa Bay Rays... Hope the kid does well...but so what he's 20... By the time he is arbitration ready that will be looking to trade him too. Would like to see what national writers are saying about Dilson, and not home fodder... It seems that recent Met everyday fielding prospects rip through the minors ... and then stall at the major league level.. Why would we expect him to not do the same..

Still amazed by all the Flores backing.. Have you all been watching.. He looks awkward at SS, with an arm so weak that all his plays at first are close... Low average, on base percentage, and no power... He has been given a chance to play, and has failed. SA shows all his cards... and folds again. . Hoping they bring up Reynolds to compete with Flores... May be that would help Flores... The answer at SS for next year is a proven FA..not Tulo but someone with some power and sure hands, with Reynolds or Ruben as backup...

Lets remember, Dilson is not the only middle inf called up by the mets at around age 20. Best case scenario he somewhat takes on that mans role.

He'll barely get any ABs. Terry hates all rookies.

Honestly, I love Murph but this is just exciting! This kid is chock full of talent, and assuming that Murph is shutdown for the year (which he should be since it's just not worth the risk of doing anything else that could do further damage), this kid will get five weeks of starting exposure at the MLB level. As such, going into next season we'll now be able to see what role he can and/or should have, in turn giving us a much better idea on how we can operate during the offseason.

Actually, the only way we won't learn what Dilson can do over these next 5 to 6 weeks is if TC is made aware that this is a rookie with great potential. And for all of you Terry apologists (which after four years of that type of madness, hopefully 'Glider' is the only one left), try and remember this gem straight from TC himself back on June 23rd on why Tejada needs to be playing over Flores:

"We don’t have time to develop players right at the moment, and you would like to develop players right at the moment, and you would like to for sure, but you can’t just say, ‘Hey, look, I’m going to sacrifice three or four days as we get some of these guys who haven’t been in the lineup, try to get them going offensively.”

Genius Terry!

Somehow Terry will find a way to justify having Tejada and Omar Quintinilla as his starting SS/2B combo once the rosters expand Monday, with Dilson and Wilmer having comfy seats on that Citi Pine.

@jreyesfan7 I like Murphy as a 2nd baseman when his salary is at its current level - $5.7M.  But since we are not the Yankees and can not just throw away contracts.  It is going to be tough for this ownership to pay him in the $10M range per year going forward

Accepted that he is a .300 hitter with poor defense - yes he is better than he was, but he is never going to have to clear shelf space for a GG - can we get a replacement (read rookie) at the league minimum to hit .275 and play much better defense?

The savings that hopefully we can use to offset the salary of an acquired proven ML bat.

Is there a chance that we could end up with a black hole at 2nd base that replicates SS? sure.  But when a team is faced with financial restraints these are they types of decisions that have to be made

Karl Leopold

@hankypanky I think it gives an idea as to what do with Murphy.  My personal opinion is that Murphy is traded this off-season.  The Mets have too many young middle infielder types ( Flores, Herrera & Reynolds- not including Tejada) that are ready to play or at lease see if they are ready to play.    Question is, what team needs a 2nd baseman that has defensive shortcomings and is due for a significant pay increase.  Yes he is .300 hitter but with limited power.  Not sure there is a huge market for him but you only need one partner to trade with.  So i guess anything is possible

Sorry, den Dekker may disappoint offensively, but he's the only player in the organization that can match Lagares defensively. Either you haven't seen him play or you are being deliberately blind.

@George Komninakis i was thinking the same its baseball . sure he maybe overwhelmed at first and he would be the same batting 8th so just lead him off l Let him not think just do what he knows how to do play Baseball the rest will come eventually. No pressure because he is up un expected so whatever he gives will be fine .

@Karl Leopold @jreyesfan7 Some day you're going are to have to invest to win. If the team starts winning the fans will come to the see the team thus more money in the owner's pockets. I have been saying this for the last 4 years. In order to win,  you need to have a mix of young players, all-stars and vets on the team. Having a team of only young players will not fair well because many will still be learning and adjusting.

The team will need to get a LF. I will go strong on Nelson Cruz. The guy hasn't dissapointed in any season despite having injuries. If Herrera can play and hit this year, convert him into a shorstop and leave Murphy at 2nd. I know one thing for sure. Tejada will definitely not be back.

Getting a MLB left fielder and wilmer/herrera in short, if herrera can prove he can play in MLB will be strong options in 2015.

@jreyesfan7 @matmil a success rate of 72% over his minor league career.  which is good  I hate it when a guy is 12 for 12 during the season.  That means to me he only stole when he knew he was going to make it and did not push the envelope.  My favorite type is the 17 out of 20 guy, good speed - not great, and knows how to steal a base

dtlmetsfan

@Ron Davis @George Komninakis True, but he's a pitcher coming up on his innings limit. Also, he's struggled with command. Dilson has struggled with....nothing. Makes sense to me.

@shoes @Randy Wilcox THor has been great in AAA, turns 22 today, further along than both Harvey and Wheeler at his age.... Las VEgas, PCL, crappy OF D for Vegas Mets of Abreu, Brown, Vaugn, look beyong the ERA.... K/BB great, Groundball % very good...he has done nothingt wrong but at this point let him help Vegas win a championship rather than coming to Citi morgue for Sept

@jreyesfan7 I hope you are right and ownership see's it that way - but until they do the only thought process i can see is them continuing the same way they have the last 4 years.

my vote is Melkey Cabrera for LF, contract similar to Granderson's "might" be enough

@kingsword1 Kingsword1 I have found the best way to respond to you is, by not responded.  The stuff that you put together is laughable and uninformed.  I especially enjoy when you start answering yourself.  My guess is next you will have 2 separate log-ins and you start having a conversation that way

@Karl Leopold Nick Markakis might be availiable if the team doesn't pick up his option. Nick is a solid player. Put him in RF and move grandy to LF where he belongs with his b-avg arm. All in All, getting a MLB LF is a must I don't care  if they overspend.
