Mets back to struggling at the plate

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Last night in Seattle, the Mets struck out 12 times, with four coming from Curtis Granderson.

The Padres and Mariners both have very good pitching staffs, especially their bullpens. That said, the Mets offense is back to looking like it did prior to going 8-2 at home and easing panic about their overall weakness, despite what the stats may have said

USATSI_7992899_110579513_lowres

The good-hitting, run-scoring, go-go Mets of the previous few weeks had been a team putting the ball in play regardless of count or situation, while not striking out much and drawing walks when all else failed. The last three days they were back to doing the opposite.

Naturally, the one ball hit really, really well on Monday, by Travis d’Arnaud, a bomb to left field, was beautifully robbed by Dustin Ackley. And so it went…

Seems like there is a post-ASB swoon every year...

Mets need to stop this as three bad games, and not let it become a bad week or longer. Any longer and all the positive feelings of 8-10 days ago will be gone.

I was really hoping they could push Alderson into making a move this year, a not wait for the offseason AGAIN!!

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.  Maybe that's a Mets saying?

Back. To.  Reality.  Its amazing how many fans here get all excited when the Mets put together a big of a good showing for 10 games.   This team is still a long ways away.

The AS break caused our guys to catch the malaise bug. Just when they seemed to be getting it together they fell off the success wagon after a short break. Come on guys....get back on the winning track.. . . Lets Go Mets!

And the Yankees pick up Chase Headley..there's the difference between the two teams. When the Yankees need a player to fill a hole, they do it. The Mets sit around and think and analyze and try and hope and ultimately…fail.

The Mets have no interest in winning.  Mediocrity is fine, as long as the cost are low.  There is simply not enough major league caliber hitters in this lineup to compete.  Period.

Again, the only way to get rid of Alderson and Collins is a prolonged, embarrassing losing streak. We are off to a good start!   Let's get swept out of the west coast!

Why cant we get a big bat? We have done it in the past. And management wonders why people dont come to the park to see the Mets????? PUT A FULL TIME MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM ON THE FIELD! Institute

Curfews for players to be in their hotels by a certain time. Limiting party time. Believe it or not , it makes a big difference in the "

ON FIELD PRODUCTION" smh

Nothing new for this team in recent years. It's like they all go home for the break and don't return. Another constant is they finally do have a good streak, regardless where they play, and they reverse it. 4 game win streak, turn around and lose four.  Go 8-2 like they just did...wouldn't surprise me if they go 2-8.

I was afraid of his, hot team, hitting well, take a break, go on the road and then go bust. Seen it million times. Tonight may be a different, pitching match-up looks favorable on paper. Need to eke out a few wins before, and I can't believe I'm about to say this,...actually enjoy a home field advantage.

Seems to me that the mets go out west, they face good pitchers they are not familiar with, and are dominated by them.  They can look at video but I guess some of the mets success has come vs teams and pitchers they know.  Not to difficult to see why they are losing.

Your so right Matt... the 8 and 2 came against weaker pitching staffs... The last few games sure shows the weakness in the lineup that was masked for the past ten games before the past few games.. But they have looked listless again.  The calls for Flores are silly.. No field no hit... Tejada is not the answer either... That won't be solved until the off season at this point.. and hope against hope rumors about trading a Gee or a Niese to get another prospect are not true. Someone wrote we need a LF, SS, and 1st baseman... I agree but I would go further. Let Kirk/Matt Den Decker platoon with Lageres next year... Lageres numbers are high because he has only had a 100 plus at bats with no pop... I don't think pitchers fear him when he comes up to plate..Plus he tries to hit too many homers which he is not a power hitter...You don't lose to much with the other two...

I also think you have to platoon Eric and Lucas ... Together I think they make a good first base combination.. No sense paying for power when you have it with a platoon... for now.. Teams not going to spend for a big gun any way..

I also think we are finding out that Grandy may need to be platooned next year against lefties... He looks awful against the good/great lefties...

I think it probably is time to jettison CY... He just doesn't have it anymore.. And, if the Braves can jettison their overpriced 2nd baseman with 20 million left on the contract the Mets can and should open a spot (backup infielder - Matt Reynolds) and stop this ridiculous six outfielder platoon... I think Bobby A needs to go to...

The team needs a spark ... and youth can provide that... And of course at Manager too...Its got to be dwelling on these starters heads they cannot give up more than one or two runs or they are going to lose... But the Mets bats have bit the bit  this week. It was nice while it lasted.  Change is needed now.. Still hoping...

Does anybody really beleive that 2015 will be any different?

Well, at least the Mets have been consistent in one thing: They have been inconsistent since we all can remember. This is not a winning team; this is a roller-coaster team which can’t keep a pace in either direction.

Kenneth Meltsner

This is what happens when you face two quality pitching staffs. Team has also looked listless and disinterested in last three games. Grandyman back to no-contact mode. Jon Niese was rusty last night and it showed. Just an abysmal line. They'll keep Dice-K in the bullpen for the remainder of the year but the plain fact is he's just not that good. Bring up one of the kids for a taste of the majors. Near Bonhead Collins Move of the Game: Pinch-hitting Bobby (2 for 30) Abreu for Eric Campbell in the 9th. I think we all knew it was just a matter of time before Abreu turned into Rick Ankiel. Finally, either bring-up Flores or deak him for somebody that can actually play LF and hit.

mike23
mike23

I think it's time to bring up Wally Backman and see what happens, if he fails and totally loses his players than they can replace him as well next season but why not give him the 2nd half of this season to see if he is a fit or not, Terry Collins is obviously not going to take this team to the next level, i'm all for giving Backman a shot with some of his young players as well as some future trades etc... and see what happens.

**Maybe take a pole in the minor league clubhouse to see if the players like him as a manager first though as if they don't than he is not the guy.

mike23
mike23

Mets continue to take one step forward followed by 3 steps back... I don't trust this current regime, wish we at the least had competent ownership that could make some changes but this organization is just a mess in general with no structure or idea of what to do next, or so it seems.

p8erbaghad

Where's Dennis Green when we need him?

mike23
mike23

can we bring back Floes and give him the starting SS job everyday so we can see what we have there... no reason Tejada should still be starting, let him backup SS/2B and lets see what happens... and no shuffling let flores start the rest of the season and get consistent at bats etc.....time to cut ties with C. Young or somehow include him in a trade, I think we've seen enough of Abreu as well, they should have made him hitting coach if they wanted to keep him around the team.

Anthony Fiore
Anthony Fiore

It is time for some changes and to see what we have going into 2015.  Cut CY and Eveland, put Tejada in reserve and bring up Flores and play him at SS the rest of the year.

C: D'Arnaud/Recker

1B: Duda/Campbell

2B: Murphy

3B:Wright

SS: Flores/Tejada

OF: Granderson

OF: Lagares

OF: Kirk

Reserves: Abreu/EY

Go with a rotation of Niese, Gee, Degrom, Wheeler and Syndergaard.  Put Montero in the pen with Black, Familia, Mejia, Edgin, Torres and Dice K.  Trade Colon.

Just a pathetic team all around.  I knew they were going to give back all there wins.  Get rid of everybody including Sandy & Terry

Mexpert

Terry stresses everyone his idiocy and panic permeates to the team. He was praising Grandy for working the count and seeing a lot of pitches . Quite the opposite he was aggressive his walks were a result of a good eye not working the count.

That said, the Mets still remain a well below average team. That said.

The mets did find long term solutions at C this season along with the bullpen. If wheeler and Duda reach their potebtial those are also 2 big positives. As for this year we will probably win 74 games.

I've never seen a team that you know are going to lose before the game even starts.

It is not like this was not expected. SS, LF and 1st base need to be upgraded. And I mean really upgraded.

Playoffs?  We have the 9th worst record in baseball.  At least our pick will be protected.  (And this year it will be protected even if it's 10th and the extra Astros' #2 pick for not signing Aiken pushes us to 11th.)

So they're back to not swinging early in the count, it's not that difficult to understand what was working p

@Steven Molello Let's keep this in perspective though.  Headley is batting .229 with seven home runs and 32 RBI's.   Its not like they just changed the landscape in the AL.

@Steven Molello . . . the Mets front office "Think and Analyze"....you are being kind. The team would look better if they had these traits.

@rico A good manager would have had them study the videos after the break, especially after what transpired the last three seasons. A good (winning) manager has his team prepared and willing to go that extra mile to win. Nice guys finish last and Leo Durocher didn't need to tell Gil Hodges that.

sickofit

@mike23 Players don't need to like the manager, they need to respect him and if he wins to follow him blindly.

@mike23 why can he hit? Google Wally and his managerial history, even his history as a guy while playing and you'll find your answer. You won't have to wonder so much

Kenneth Meltsner

@mike23 I agree. Would love to know how, exactly, Wally fell out of favor with Sandy and the Wilpons. And the proper spelling is 'poll.' On the other hand I would very much support taking a pole to Terry and Sandy.

Starz31

@mike23 It shouldn't be up to the players who the manager is. The best manager for the job doesn't have to be liked by his players, but respected. I bet you Backman would be a great fit.

At the end of the day though, the manager isn't going to make that much of a difference with a team full of holes. Sure, he can get the team to over-produce their talent but it's still would be negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Mike Herrington
Mike Herrington

@mike23 On a side note the Mets have the 4th best prospect system after having one of the worst just a few seasons ago. This does not count the players who already are on the ML ballclub. This does not appear to be a sign that the organization is a mess in my opinion.

rico

@mike23 why would any team want Chris Young this season. He will get invited so somebody's spring training next season and vy for a spot on a major league team.

As for Flores.  I heard collins last night say he wishes there was the DH in the NL that way they could have a spot for Wilmer. The Mets are NOT going with Wilmer at SS. They just are not.

sickofit
sickofit

@Anthony Fiore Eric  is the worst hitter on the team. That's why he bats 9th when he's in the lineup. He makes Chris Young look like Babe Ruth.

Anthony Fiore

Actually I would probably cut Abreu as well and bring up Den Dekker or Reynolds.  Wish Vaughn or Puello were hitting better but it appears they are in the .240's/.250's.

@Kyle Suta There was a team playing in the Polo Grounds in '62 that fits that description.

George Brezny

@freewally  I do to... Just even it its for the sake of change at this point... I think the team knows its over its head with the lineup they put out their against the great pitchers...and even the ones not so great.. almost getting no hit...  I am glad someone else is glad D'Arnaud had come through... With all the hits he took... in his first year... He obviously shows hustle, and heart... I hope Gary and Ronnie get off his back on the pass ball things.. He is doing just fine... He senses the urgency ...He knows the guy in the minors is being considered... Next year will be a good test for him... Once he feels like he belongs I think he will be just fine.. Got robbed last night but his batting average has shown vast improvement, and showing more clutch at bats... That's why I hope they keep both guys, and both of them are on the roster next year...

@Tormented Mets Fan  Also possible the league is starting to adjust and not throw them complete meatballs early in the count.  Not saying their performance has been acceptable all the last few games, but just swinging early in the count won't by itself get it done.

mike23
mike23

@Anthony Fiore I'd be all for giving anyone a chance at the major league level, some guys improve when they get to the big club so be it vaughn or puello etc.... you don't know what they can do until they are given a chance so why not let any of them come up and take their cuts etc... sometimes teams over think and that is definitely true with Sandy and the mets.
