Moment in PSL: Catchers work to adjust to new MLB rules

Rob Brender avatarRobert Brender, MetsBlog:

This morning at Tradition Field, the team’s catchers worked with coach Bob Geren on blocking the plate, as well as a new strategy for tagging out runners attempting to score. Remember, runners can’t run over catchers any more. With that, the catchers are looking for ways to adapt to the new rule that will allow them to be the most proficient and quickest possible at applying tags…

Bob Geren proceeded to share his many years of knowledge with them by setting up a TV with a direct hookup to the same thing being taught at Cardinals spring training camp:)

The rule probably should be you can't barrel into catcher unless he's significantly blocking plate.

Totally lame rule change. Is it like the little league rule now: slide or avoid? Does anyone have a link the wording of the rule? What if the catcher uses too much force on the tag and injures the runner, does the runner get the base? Sounds like they were advised by some mothers for this one...

If runners cannot run through the catcher, then can't catchers just wall themselves between the runner and the plate? I feel like catchers get a huge advantage here.

Question about the rule: if a non-catcher is covering the plate, can the runner flatten the guy who isn't wearing armor? I'm assuming you can still take at a 2B to break up a DP and can flatten any other position player to knock a ball loose, just as long as you're in the baseline and it's not a catcher.

@Raymond Ayling Why?  You watch 162 games every year to see the 2 collisions that happen a season?  No one runs the catchers over anymore anyway.  Murphy did it last year and it was the only time in the last 2 or 3 seasons.
