Moment from PSL: Young pitching continues to impress

Andrew Vazzano, SNY.tv

Sure, it’s just spring training, but… another day, another impressive performance from young Mets arms.

On Friday, against the Nationals, Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom each turning in two perfect innings of work. Montero struck out two, while deGrom struck out four Nationals.

Mets fans will probably get to see both of these pitchers at Citi Field this season,  Montero possibly coming up mid-year and deGrom as an arm that could get promoted come September.

Montero Pitching

Why would Montero beat deGrom to the majors? I know that deGrom is a converted position player, but he is both older and has more experience in AAA than Montero.

Wouldn't surprise me if we see deGrom first and certainly before September.

I love this young pitching. And I know you can never have too much pitching. BUT, we have to pull the trigger at some point on a deal to bring in a bat. I wonder if Sandy doesn't want to rush these young guys bc they're numbers will look so much better in the minors, and that could increase their trade value. Let's keep Wheeler, Noah, and obviously Harvey, and trade anybody else for a nice bat. I'll take Matt Kemp(if Dodgers eat some money), Dexter Fowler, etc. I don't want to trade them for potential, we need a proven commodity. Tulo is the best option, but I don't see the Rockies moving him, and if they did Noah would have to be included, and while I would pull the trigger, Sandy won't. But I'd trade Noah, Murphy, and Degrom for Tulo in a heartbeat. I'm that confident in Wheeler, Harvey, I also love Meijia.

Gotta pull the trade trigger for a bat - this line up isnt going to hit quality MLB pitching ( braves and nats!). No depth of legit hitters - if murph or wright get hurt we're toast. Not sure what arm to trade but someone should go - lets hope we make good decision

DeGrom's mechanics still need the be cleaned a little, he pulls off the ball as evidence by his head turn after the landing of the front foot. Watching him, his future would seem to be in the bullpen to avoid an arm injury unless he corrects that flaw.

I know it was just one game and it was a ST game; but these guys looked good. Their stock just went up. I'm sure there were scouts in the stands looking on.

Keep in ,mind that deGrom has only pitched for 4 years, a converted SS. His stuff is filthy and with just a little experience...

Montero and DeGrom looked very good out there, Montero will be the sleeper out of all the Mets prospects

DeGrom reminds me of Arroyo for some reason

Listen it was a spring training, first game of the year...couple of innings each

But I will say this...I have been a mets fan since 1984.....this might be the best collection of young pitching we have had in a long time and arguably in our history. Not just one or two standouts...we have a lot of young pitching..some almost guarantees and others with tremendous potential

I can see the Mets trading from surplus at some point for a big bat. All of these guys cannot break the rotation and you cannot stick them all in the bullpen...

We do not give Sandy enough kudos...I know I definitely do not because I feel he talks out of his "you know what" a lot...but he did a tremendous job with our minor league system, specifically pitching...and when Harvey returns next year, we have a chance to have one of the best rotations in baseball...and the bigger plus? All under 30.....scary

Missed Montero but deGrom really looked like a guy with a good fastball and nast biting slider. Looking forward to watching him pitch this spring....hes gonna be a hot name leaving florida

Montero showed nice control, but deGrom's stuff was more electric

And he has hardly any experience in AA or AAA. No reason to rush him.

@Victor Triguero  Harvey, Niese (7th rd 2005), Gee (21st rd 2007) and Parnell (9th rd 2005) were drafted by Minaya, so let's give him some props too.
