Moment from PSL: Syndergaard highlights intrasquad game

Andrew Vazzano, SNY.tv

Noah Syndergaard struck out five in two innings of work in Thursday’s intrasqaud game.

His curve was devastating, the “hook from hell,” as Terry Collins calls it. Syndergaard said he only threw one changeup all day, moving exclusively between fastballs and curveballs.

Syndergaard’s presence on the mound is something you really have to see in person. In the small minor league park, where you can usually hear chatter from everyone,  it was amazing at how quiet it was while he was pitching. There was some light construction going on past the right field fence, and that was the only noise in the park while Syndergaard was working. Everyone was captivated, silently watching the 6-foot-6 pitcher work.

He, by far, got the loudest applause from the couple hundred fans on hand when his innings were over. He told the media that he was impressed with the crowd’s reaction.

Syndergaard told the media that he was pretty pumped up to pitch today and that he’s excited to pitch on Monday against the Braves.

At the end of the day, he did give up a run on a few hits, but even when a player got a hit off him, they didn’t come easy.

“There’s going to be something special about him,” Terry Collins said after the game.

So has Metsblog just decided they don't want to deal us anymore? Every article posted after this one has it's comment section disabled.

This kid is talented and looks good.

If Sandy and the Wilpons expect to win 90 games, they need their best players on the roster on Opening Day, not the minors.

If they are realistic and smart, they will start these guys where they belong and bring them up when it's best.

As hard as it is, especially considering where the franchise has been lately, we as Met fans need to temper our expectations on this kid, me included. He gave up 4 hits in two innings to low level minor league kids. He will be fine but he does need to work on some things so let him work on them down in Vegas for a couple of months. Thankfully we have Wheeler and Harvey (next year) with him so that the three of them can push each other and help each other. He still needs to work on consistent release point on his curve and he worked on his change a lot last year. Once he gets his change to be anything near average he has the tools to be a stud. And some of the people in baseball expect him to be better than Harvey and Wheeler eventually but let's not anoint him Cy Young after one start. I for one am just thrilled SA pulled this deal off

Seeing lots of articles about Syndergaard today, which is great - super excited for the kid.  But why nothing about Mejia and Familia?  Both put up better numbers today.  2 IP and 4 K for Mejia, who struck out the side in his 2nd inning.  And Familia - 2 IP, 5 K, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB.  That's awesome.

Either a great day for the young arms or a terrible day for the offense, depending how you look at it.

Everyone get on twitter and tweet #DavidWright #FaceofMLB to make wright the face of the mlb it's the finals and we've gotta get him all the help he can get

If he was on the Cardinals he would start the year on the Mets. All their top pitching prospects skipped AAA, think Shelby Miller and Wacha. The Mets stop poor value veterans who lose anyway, think Markham, now Lannen and Dice K would start over Thor ans Mejia. The is a reason they were waived and ho nody wanted them.

The Cards have a Winning mentality, and the Mets a lets get by mentality. Just another stupid decision by this Mgt. Group.

There's a story about Jose Abreu on ESPN.com that's just painful to read.

he did give up 4 hits to a-ball players, looked like they caught up with his fastball. Good start, a lot to be seen.

What are Syndergaard's developmental targets in AAA, this year? Has anyone discussed that with the press? I'm curious because, other than avoiding Super Two and benefitting the team, financially, I'd like to know what he'll get out Vegas.

Sandy Is a great businessman. he got Thor andTda for a 40 year and also  2 months of a 37 year old for zack wheeler

The Mets still need to address this offense. The thought that there are still moves that can be made is pretty astounding. They should...

A.) Trade for Gregorious, Owings, or Franklin

B.) Sign Kendrys Morales

C.) Trade Ike for a pitcher

God the thought of placing this guy at that craphole in Vegas to start the season makes me sick.  The super 2 stuff will never make sense to me.  I understand it if you're Tampa and you're going to lose the guy once he becomes a free agent, but if you're the Mets, and you're going to (I know I'm being naïve here) pay the guy if he's really good, just let him pitch.

@nymets6 Wright's a great guy and a great player, but he's know where near the best player in mlb.  Making him "the face" doesn't make a whole lot of sense.    Trout makes sense.

The Cards brought everyone up last year because of injuries AND they were at the top of the food chain. There's a difference.

Also, Wacha skipped every level.

Or the fact he's only pitched 11 innings in AAA. But when have facts stopped ya, Eric?

eric88

@dannym28  That's one way to look at it, the other is the other GM's felt they had to have our players to contend. Sandy did not put a spell on them, they were amenable to the price. Trading a performing vet for prospects are the easiest trades to make. you have something they desparately need. Sandy has NOT shown an ability to make a single trade without a vet that was performing at a top level.Where are the creative trades to fill 1B, SS, Bullpen. With all his pitching chips why do we still have holes, I do not get it. I have not seen one trade like that in now his 4th season.

Mike Dell Italia

@ac0814  don't we have enough pitchers? i rather an outfielder or a bullpen guy.  Or maybe sign drew and let duda and davis battle it out.  I do like morales tho

rstpigeon
rstpigeon

@ac0814 Trading price is still too high for those in A - although, it the team should keep trying. C is out - Ike is not tradable for anyone - nobody wants him for anyone that the Mets would want in return.

Signing Morales would be an interesting move - they're just not going to do it. They shot their off-season on Granderson, overpaying for Chris Young and some smart stocking for the bullpen and rotation. They left nothing for any further offensive upgrades. What you see in PSL is the whole foundation they'll work with.

@mets2891 It's not all about the super 2 stuff. He's also only had 11 starts at the AA level, and has an innings limit of 145 this year. He probably needs the time down on the farm.

@chasesimms @nymets6  Well Wright is in the finals against Eric Sogard from Oakland so it's clearly not about who's the best player.

@airfeet @eric88  Sorry Airhead, I meant 17 total minor league starts. My statement on Cardinals vs. us stands !7 starts.

eric88

@niesesnose  Hey Nose, your right, mispoke, however my Cardinal statement is better proven now because FACT; He only made 17 total MINOR LEAGUE STARTS, TOTAL !! That's where they differ from us, make sense now, Nose?

Eddie_Dean
Eddie_Dean

@Starz31 @rstpigeonHe has a grand total of 11 starts at AA, and you think this is about about super 2? Kid needs more time in the minors. People seem to think he's heading into the year of his development that Wheeler was last year, or Harvey was the year before that. This is incorrect, he's still a year behind that point. His innings limit this year is a measly 145. Even if he comes up in June or July, it would be a full year ahead of Wheeler or Harvey were when they got their call-ups.

This kid needs more time in the minors. Besides, look at the rotation right now: Niese (assuming he's healthy), Wheeler, Colon, and Gee all have guaranteed spots in the rotation. That leaves the 5th starter spot. I get not wanting to see guys like Dice-K or Lanna in that spot, but Syndergaard hasn't done anything to justify jumping him over fellow prospects like Montero and Mejia. Both those guys are more major league ready right now.

Eddie_Dean
Eddie_Dean

@eric88 "Sandy has NOT shown an ability to make a single trade without a vet that was performing at a top level."

What would you call the trade for EYJ? I get that he's a flawed player, but at worst he's a solid 4th outfielder, and he could even be a so-so leadoff man. And Sandy got him for a AAAA pitcher who has never done anything of note in the majors, and likely never will.

sylow59

Oh look - you're complaining and making an idiot of yourself. I never saw that coming.

niesesnose

This is the most idiotic thing I've ever read on metsblog. Prospect trades are easy? Really? Like that Santana trade right? The twins sure got back some quality major leaguers! Or the Seaver trade! Or how about Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero! Or Doug Fister for Robby Ray and Steve Lombardozzi, right. Good god, I understand this Is metsblog and the bar is set quite low, but this is just-just-....wow

@rstpigeon @ac0814 There's a lot of hype in the fan base about signing Morales and I'm not quite sure I get it. Although Davis and Duda are huge disappointments they still are being played up to be in a big competition for the position. There is also Flores who can't stay in the minors forever and needs his at bats, and first base seems like the most logical solution to get him more playing time. What I am trying to say is while Morales is by far more advanced than all 3 of the bats I metioned, why would we spend our money to further complicate a position while the are still holes at others that have not been filled. Wouldn't it be wiser to spend that money on Drew or a high end bullpen arm?

mets2891
mets2891

@Eddie_Dean @mets2891 Fair enough, I'm just saying if he completely dominates during Spring Training, put him in the rotation.  Some guys are just ready.

Kevin VanTassell

You're comparing apples and oranges here. Wacha was drafted out of college, and Syndergaard out of high school, Wacha is a year older than Syndergaard, If things work out as planned Syndergaard will make at least 9 starts in his 21 year old season just like Wacha did, maybe even more.

Mike DeRosa
Mike DeRosa

@sylow59 It just shows that the Mets (See: Wilpons) don't care about players being 'ready.' its about how soon they will actually earn mlb money.

That being said, i think all our current youngin's need some AAA time to get going, then bring them up mid season. This year is a wash anyways with Harvey down.

niesesnose

.240 against righties with a 127 wRC+. He's fine against righties as part of a platoon with satin. A Duda-Satin platoon could easily combine for top 10 in wRC. It's a decent to above average platoon

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@rstpigeon @Zach Goeringer @ac0814 I agree completely with your assessments of both Ike and Duda. I'd still like to see what Flores can do with the bat against major league pitching before we go out and spend money on a solution to a problem we may already have. Seems like this year would be a good trial and error year being that we aren't expected to make much playoff noise.

rstpigeon
rstpigeon

@Zach Goeringer @rstpigeon@ac0814I'd like to see Flores at 1B. But for some reason, the mentality of baseball has changed such that it has to be a fat slugger or a professional glove at the position. It astounds me.

My issues with Davis are twofold: 1) if he has a bad year, we know what we've got. But if he has a good year, we still don't. So, if he does well, he gets another arb year with the Mets and they end up paying for someone they can only hope is worth the money. 2) There's an attitude problem and a fragile ego.

My issue with Duda is simple - he doesn't appear to be very good at anything. He doesn't field or hit well enough to play anywhere on a major-league field, not even 1B. It's a god thing he's cheap. You're getting what you pay for with him. Duda has only looked good when he was slapping singles and taking walks - look at the size of this guy - he should be hitting the cover off the ball for 40+ a year except that he has no athletic ability.

Eddie_Dean
Eddie_Dean

@Zach Goeringer That I'd agree with. I thought they couldn't get much dumber than when it was in New Orleans. But sure enough, they topped themselves by having it on the other side of the country in Vegas.

@mets2891 @Eddie_Dean  let see what he does against the braves.  he was pitching to minor league guys today.

my personal take is he should work on his change at AAA ( 2 pitches is not enough) plus ignoring the player control aspect of super 2 status is dumb.

mets are looking at .500 at best this year.   next year with Harvey and Thor we could be a wild-card contender.  assuming the Wilpons bring the payroll to 100 million.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@mets2891 @Eddie_Dean Having our triple AAA affiliate in Vegas is a joke. It is the exact opposite environment as Citi Field. Our Farm system's foundation is young pitching and rather than giving them confidence at their last stop before the majors, we instead provide them with a Coors field like environment setting them up to get shelled. Its also completely across the country so in a emergency situation where we need a player same day its not even an option. Norfolk and buffalo were fine I don't know why they feel the need to switch every 3 years.
