Mike Piazza at camp as guest instructor

Mike Piazza is in Port St. Lucie on Monday. He said he will be around this week as a guest instructor for the team.

11:05 am: Travis d’Arnaud worked on framing pitches with Piazza today…

D’Arnaud has said on many occasions that he’s long admired Piazza’s ability to frame pitches.

9:35 am: Piazza told SNY that he and Jeff Wilpon had been talking about this for weeks, and he’s glad they were able to make it happen.

“It’s fun to get back in the uniform and be around the clubhouse,” said Piazza. “I feel like I have a lot to teach. Obviously I feel like I got a lot out of my ability when I played. If I could just talk to some young guys and maybe help them advance their careers, it’s very rewarding.”

David Wright added that having Piazza in camp is great for everyone, not just Travis d’Arnaud and the team’s catchers.

9:12 am: Piazza is already holding court with d’Arnaud near the clubhouse.

“It’s a dream,” d’Arnaud said (Vorkunov, Mar. 3), who has said he grew up idolizing Piazza as a baseball fan in California.

Hopefully he talks to all of them about hitting, and how to hit.

I heard this but thought It was a joke. Mikey could NOT EVER frame a pitch the way d'Arnaud already can. DON'T LISTEN!!!!!!!!

Piazza seems only to be teaching the kid a thing or two about framing pitches - something we know T D'iddy knows. Working with a childhood idol must be inspiring, so I could see Travis getting an inspired kick in the pants from Piazza's visit. I know I would!

It's cool that Piazza's down in PSL, but he couldn't throw out a runner to save his life! He should be in the cage teaching d'Arnaud how to hit.

The only thing that Piazza could not do as a catcher was throw well. That was a function of his arm, not his ability to catch the ball, call a game, block the plate, or frame a pitch. I would take him as a catching coach anytime. Good move!
