MLB approved expanded instant replay

Major League Baseball approved expanded instant replay on Thursday, which will be in place in time for the start of the 2014 season.

Per the rules of the expansion, each manager will have at least one challenge per game. If a manager uses and wins a challenge, he would be awarded another one. Additionally, umpires (crew chiefs specifically) will have the option to call for reviews from the seventh inning on.

The calls in question will all be reviewed at a command center in New York (not at the ballpark). Stadiums will also be permitted to show all replays on the scoreboard at the game.

Plays that can be challenged are home runs, ground-rule doubles, fan interference, boundary calls, force plays (with the exception of the neighborhood play at second base), tags, traps (outfield only), hit by pitch, whether a runner scores before the third out is recorded, passing another baserunner and correct counts.

2 challenges per nine innings 1 during extra innings. only argue safe/out fair or foul. all home runs are reviewable.

I'd rather see the neighborhood play go under review and not have an appeal on the hit by pitch. The neighborhood play is about sloppy defense and bad umpiring. Hit by pitch brings the strikezone into play and poses a slippery slope. Most of all, though, my biggest concern is that this becomes a crutch and a reason not to improve umpiring. MLB umpiring has been in decline for 20 years or so and the league has not seen fit to address the problem in any meaningful way.

This is still a game played by human beings and should not be treated by fans as needing to be as perfect as a virtual game would be. If what we want is perfect baseball, just set up a simulator on the xbox and watch the games play out - no one misses a call, all teams are made up of stars, it never rains, the seats are cheap, salaries non-existent, no one ever gets hurt, no one ages out, and Matt Harvey's elbow never needs surgery - perfect baseball.

its a safety thing, without it shortstops would get their knees blown out.

ty Michael........and most of the time they are not and the runner should not be called out!!!!!!

you're right, the shortstop should be on the bag when he receives the ball.

Are the umpires going to have to leave the field to talk to the command center?

The umpiring has gotten increasingly worse with each passing year, to the point where they are on the verge of destroying the game. The replay system should have been in effect years ago. For those of you who turn a blind eye to the fiasco on the field, remember why this reform was necessary.

the neighborhood play should be included!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm against it. Bad calls will happen, but they are right most of the time... and as long as you're going to have it, why aren't "trap" plays reviewable in the infield, but only the outfield? THAT makes no sense.

MLBTV did a report on this earlier in the offseason.  They experimented with it in the Arizona Fall league this winter, and compared it to some of the "Umpire Conference" calls that were made during the regular MLB season, Including the Pedroia play in the WS.

Replay review times ranged from 45 seconds to a minute and a half.  It actually sped the game up by an average of 4-6 minutes when you take into account the Manager arguing, the Umps conferencing, and the play finally be called.

Can't believe it. No reason to have it get the call right the first time

Awful. Like replay isn't wrecking football enough, now it'll be undermining a National Pastime near you.

Good thing... games were going to fast as it is. #ugh

Force play (except a fielder's touching on second base on a double play) WTF missing the base could be the play thats missed the most by umps.

Good, the games weren't long enough.

So if a manager challenges the play and it is not overturned, will there be a penalty. Like in the NFL they lose a time-out. Of course, there are no time-outs in baseball. Or will they just not have the right to another challenge?

Great, so we're giving Terry another thing he will inevitably mess up.  Fantastic!

Somebody hack the Replay Command Center so we can watch Mets baseball from 100 different camera angles.

When I read tags, I immediately thought of tag-ups. I feel like thats one of the aspects that would be most practical to review

So you can't challenge the neighborhood play? That's probably a good idea, honestly, or we'd have  a lot of injured middle infielders and runners next season.

It's a start, they have to do something...

Eh.  I'm worried that challenges will get used to buy pitchers time to warm up, or throw a pitcher off his game, or whatever.

But we'll see.

@hankypanky Has the umpiring really gotten worse or has HDTV just exposed what was already there?

ElVPresidente

@personman Doubtful anybody's dumb enough to waste his one challenge trying to buy more warmup pitches.

personman
personman

Why not?

It's the 8th inning and you need some time.  Is it really that likely that you'll have something worth challenging in the next two innings?

ElVPresidente
ElVPresidente

@personman Who knows? Imagine if a manager threw away his challenge like that and then got caught without one in a critical situation. He'd be roasted till hell wouldn't take him.

Greg Baker
Greg Baker

@personman because you cant just randomly challenge! there has to be a play that allows it.
