Mike Francesa has had enough of the Mets

WFAN’s Mike Francesa says the Mets have banned members of the organization from appearing on his show and they refuse to let him broadcast from Citi Field.

The Mets are not boycotting WFAN, a team source said, instead they are trying to build up their new radio relationship with WOR (Daily News, May 13).

According to Francesa, the Mets are mad WFAN didn’t re-up its contract.

“It’s just ridiculous,” he said. “The Mets are acting like jackasses. It’s utter nonsense. You know what? I’ve had enough of the Mets.”

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

It’s worth noting Francesa makes this exact argument about the Jets, who also don’t broadcast on WFAN.

Anyway, the way I understand it, this is as much the Yankees doing as it is the Mets. I’ve been told by radio insiders that, as part of their agreement with WFAN, the Yankees must get more players and promotions on air than their cross-town rival, which is understandable. However, because of the draft, postseason hockey and hoops, etc., the Yankees haven’t had many opportunities to be on air, which means even less available air time for the Mets.

At the same time, the Mets are obligated to do more media with WOR. Mets players already feel their asked to do too much media, so my guess is a tie goes to the team’s radio partner, as it should, and not Francesa.

Lastly, though I don’t know why exactly, WFAN was not offered a paid, sponsored interview with Terry Collins, as had been the case during previous seasons.

This is one of those things that sounds important because Francesa yelled about it, but if you stop and think for a minute it all makes total sense from most everyone’s point of view.

The Pope has probably been responsible for the latest moves by Sandy. As far as TC is concerned the less he speaks the better it is! He constantly is putting his foot in his mouth! Expect him to bench Tejada today, the guy just doesn't know how to keep success going!

He's the man responsible for FAN dropping the Mets

He's embarrassing. Bitter, mean, & lazy. Ignore him, who cares.

All he does is belittle callers! I never understood why people call his show!

Whaaaaaaaa  They will not let me do my show at Citifield so I  am not going.   Sounds as bad as  Sid Crosby always crying.   lol

By the way, I think both sides of this are being a bit petty.  On the heels of one of their main in-house executives leaking the news that he's exploring his liquidation options, you think it's a good idea for the Mets to be dismissing ANY promotional opportunities??  And, is WOR doing a daily Met hour talk show?  Besides game coverage, and pre and post game shows, is WOR scheduling ANY more Mets specific programming?  No, i didn't think so.  So WTH are they talking about?

The FAN owes the Mets nothing.  Conversely, the Mets owe the FAN nothing either.

Francessa is a clown.  Always has been.  I give him credit for nothing and I'm not impressed that he maintains a following considering he occupies the most coveted time slot in all sports talk radio (afternoon drive time in NYC).  A position mind you, that he holds because the FAN is too scared to move forward with anything new..

WFAN dumped the Mets.  Absent a contractual arrangement, why would the Mets be obligated to continue any further relationship with WFAN?  Furthermore, Francessa is a blowhard and horrible broadcaster.  I never understood the appeal.

The Mets went to WOR because they needed a 50,000 watt station.  It was bad enough that they were being evicted from their home of 26 years AND off FM radio, they couldn't then go to a station that didn't have the ability to reach the same regional parts as FAN did.  50,000 Watt AM stations in NYC include:

WFAN

WWOR - Political talk

WABC - All news

WCBS - All news

WEPN - ESPN affiliate broadcasts in...SPANISH

WINS - All news station for 49 years...not likely to switch to take on the Mets

WBBR - Bloomberg Radio...not likely a Met landing

WQEW - THE FREAKING DISNEY CHANNEL

Some are not good fits for the Mets and some had no interest.  Your choices, if you're the Mets, are really only WOR and maybe ABC.

Now Mike is acting like he knew that Kasmir was going to pitch great after dusting himself off the scrapheap of pitchers.. What a phony!

Francessa was better when Mad dog  was there to be a different voice for the show.  Now it has become one mans Kingdom  that resembles more like the Gestaopo than a sports show. If Mike does not like your opinion he calls you  names or cuts you off.   Real Professional  LOL

I understand Francesca isn't the most likeable and even when he's wrong, he sticks by it and calls out other people that are right but he's dead on in this case. They send David Wright to promot ticket sales for this crappy club before the season starts and now they refuse to let anyone involved with the organization talk. We can't even get Terry to come on like Girardi does and give lineups.

Also Cerrone, If you're going to call out Francesca for this, at least give the facts. He's been saying the exact same thing about the Yankees and their petty nonsense as well, but they still send reps to talk to him. This organization is a joke, and will remain a joke until the Wilpons start running the team right

Slowly but surely, Francessa is burning every bridge he has.  He's waging a war that he can't win because there are now so many outlets for news, blogs, interest, Twitter, etc.  He's being marginalized.

Watching Francessa do a radio show on TV is like watching Lead paint dry.

Maybe Fatcessa should look at how arrogant he has become and wonder why nobody want to talk to him.  His callers have got to be the most stupid fans on the planet

Francesa is the reason the Mets bats came alive last night after he told Ed Coleman that their hitters were pitiful and most didn't belong in the majors.  Well, maybe if they played in Yankee Stadium they would be outhitting the Yankees.

Mike Francesa is a pompous arrogant....you know what!!  All he cares about is the Yankees. I think he thinks he is their manager and is actual friends with Girardi and Jeter. They probably think he is a joke. He is rude and always answers his own questions when doing interviews. I cannot believe he has been on the air this long.

Francesa is a Yankees fanatic.

Francesa fought to get the Yankees on WFAN, and probably made it part of his contract that they DO dump the Mets

Francesa has been, is, and always will be obsessed with HIMSELF.

Francesa is why I don't listen to WFAN from 1pm to 6:15pm Monday through Friday, and the new Yankee focus of the station is why I have gradually left that station on my daily 60 minute commute to and from work.

Francesa is a TERRIBLE host as mentioned by numerous people below.

I don't know who the hell in the New York area is listening to this bum, to make his show more popular - but my GUESS is that he's listened to because there IS no other NY Sports radio show; and NOT because of HIS prowess.

Mad Dog station on Sirius/XM.  ESPN radio.  MUCH better alternatives for sports talk in general.

Nothing Francesa says is important.

What Mikey conveniently forgets to mention is that WFAN won't allow Michael Kay to do his talk show from inside Yankee Stadium.  I know that stems back from the days when ESPN prohibited their army of reporters from going on WFAN, but it is still Francesa's station banning another station from Yankee Stadium.

Mikey should be more concerned about getting out of that dopey Fox Sports contract that has him being preempted by everything from soccer to the National Watching Paint Dry League.

Part of radio seems to be the art of presenting a train wreck, so if he wants to just present the minorly troubled yankees all the time as compelling radio, it'll be interesting how that goes.

TheTrueStork

Francesa is an ass, and I'm not sure why anyone cares about what he thinks.  When the Mets were with the 'fan, Francesa was never afraid of showing his preference for the Yankees, so why should he even care about the Mets now?  As far as I'm concerned, Francesa is in the Mets rear-view mirror.  Who cares what that windbag thinks?

Mike is and always has been a spoiled/sore loser Yankee fan. Nothing more, nothing less. His "interviews" aka love ins with Joe Girardi are a joke, all the two of them do is run down the roster by using the players nicknames: Eduardo Nunez = Nooney. (At least you don't have to hear that anymore).

This makes sense from a business standpoint, and Francesa is acting like a petulant jerk as always, but it once again feels like it's us - the fans - who are getting the short end of the stick.

Like or loathe Francesa, at least the Mets were in the conversation.  And Sandy interviews for events like Montero's callup, trade deadline, etc. as well as weekly TC interviews were readily available to us.

None of that fits with WOR's programming, so that kind of availability/accessibility is gone - at least for the short term.  Big time overlook on the Mets part.

Fat Mike loves the Yankees (especially Arod) and looks at the mets with disdain. So what? There is so much else out there to read/listen to anyway if you don't like his show.Anyway, as much as I dislike Fat boy for his arrogance (like when something happens that he claimed he knew about in advance), is he really saying anything about the mets that we all don't say here every day?

@archer41  he's certainly not being marginalized. He has a contractual deal with a national TV network to syndicate his show. He absolutely has the pulse of NYC, whether people agree with his views or not. Mike knows the pulse of the people, the Mets have zero clue what that is.

This was exactly my thinking when he went off about this subject. The fact of the matter is that it's us, the fans, that suffer from this. The Mets not allowing their personnel on WFAN is childish and hurting their brand.

@stage52  If they are, A) it doesn't show and 2) i'd be surprised.  Because as I illustrated above, their options looked minimal.  Hmmm, sorta like having to move their AAA affiliate to a desert 2,200 miles away from Queens.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@stage52  That sounds more like the FAN tried to make the Mets take a pay cut on the next contract, using the availability of the yankees as leverage.  Here's the only issue with that idea (I mean besides the fact that change was announced 2 weeks BEFORE the 2013 season had ended):  The Mets took forEVER to find another broadcast partner (2 months), and an extra 2 months to secure Howie and Josh.  If this decision was "mutual" i would think they would've had a better plan.

stage52
stage52

@C.K. Dexter Haven @stage52 The beef was what WFAN/ was paying to have the Mets exclusivity. WFAN did not want to pay more so Mets chose to move.  It was a  a mutual decision and not like Francessa is reporting it
