Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog: Seriously, you are coming across as so dejected on your blog and on Twitter lately. I get your skepticism, but it’s so depressing. I hope you’re OK.
Shannon, MetsPolice.com: I always just write what I feel and I am very skeptical right now. The finish line keeps moving. Now I think we are waiting on the Matt Harvey miracle cure (man, that was THE worst thing that could have happened) and fans seem to think Sandy Alderson is going shopping. I think there will be a body at shortstop, a “Marlon Hairston” right fielder, and a lot of “we have young pitching” marketing campaigns.
Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog: Marlon Hairston. That’s funny. I like that. But, how is the finish line moving?
Shannon, MetsPolice.com: At one point it was wait for 2013. Now it’s about how all of this money is coming off the books for 2014, but they have so many needs and Harvey is gonna be out, etc…
Matthew Cerrone: MetsBlog: Well, I don’t think it was ever “wait for 2013.” It was always about 2014. They’ve been saying privately and then publicly since the day Sandy took over that this is the winter they were working toward. That hasn’t changed. I do think Alderson’s statements about making moves for and during the last few years have changed, but the idea that this winter and next year would be when they begin to turn the wheel has never moved.
That said, whether they will turn the wheel can be debated. I don’t know why anyone would waste time judging something that hasn’t happened yet. But, to each his own. Believe me, I’ve thought about it. I know what you’re fearing. But I’m patient. I wait, it’s what I do. That said, once the offseason is over and the dust has settled, if they fail to do what they’ve said, and they do not improve this winter, if it’s more of the same despite the rhetoric and opening in payroll, and if the goal posts move, yes, I’m gonna be as dejected as you and I’ll obviously articulate that on MetsBlog. Until then, I’m going to wait and see….
Shannon, MetsPolice.com: I hope I am wrong, Matt. I truly hope I am wrong about everything and that 2014 is awesome.
Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog: You and me both, man. You and me both.
