MetsBlog Q&ACast, pres. by Verizon: Jayson Stark talks Mets, “Plan,” and trade deadline

In this week’s MetsBlog Q&ACast, presented by Verizon, MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone talks with ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark about the best-run franchises in MLB, as how baseball looks at Sandy Alderson’s “Plan.”

Stark also has a new book out, Wild Pitches: Rumblings, Grumblings, and the Game I Love, which you can learn more about at ESPN.com.

why doesn't he talk about Madoff and the Wilpons inability to spend like a big market team?

Trade Murph asap. He's stock is higher than ever ie.Allstar 2nd basemen. Dilson is killing AA. He's the future. Murphy for good prospects in turn flip them for an offseason trade for dare I say STANTON

I haven't listened, but I'm confident Stark has the Mets listed above the Rockies.

Can someone please summarize what Stark said about the Mets future plans?

Yea, I mean its nice to hear someone like Jason Stark say it, but as a die hard Mets fan I can see the plan. It has just taken a few extra years to come to light. But comn, look at our possible staff next year; Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Gee, Degrom, mejia, familia. Throw in our prospects; Syndergaard, Montero, Matz and more. Don't forget Dice K, or Colon, Vic Black, Parnell etc! The Mets are so stacked with pitchers that in 2 years if they kept them all, there inst enough room! That's probably the best problem to have as a rebuilding Major League Baseball Team. The question I have is, with all this pitching that's already here and on the way, who is staying and who is leaving? We need other positions filled and the quickest way to relevancy is trading away some of our young arms. If it was up to me, Harvey is untouchable ( you need a fearless ace), I would keep Degrom also ( he just has that fight you want in your pitchers), Niese ( need at least 1 lefty), then honestly any combo of the remaining pitchers we have, trade the extra for team needs. I leave Wheeler out simply because I like Degrom a little better right now with what I've seen. Any trade is probably going to require Wheeler or Degrom, right now Id rather keep Degrom. If we can keep both, FANTASTIC!

@wingo43

Also, Stark said money wasn't going to be a long-term problem for the Mets as it is for Oakland and Tampa.  I guess he doesn't follow the Mets that closely.

He said what you know - that the Mets have assembled a lot of high potential pitching, and it will be interesting to see if they can translate some of that into position players with trades, not at the deadline, but in the offseason.  He said that scouts like what the Mets have in the minors.

He named GM's that do a good job - Oakland, Tampa, Detroit, St Louis, Yankees and said they all do it different ways.  He said Oakland has a 1-year plan, a 3-year plan, and a 5-year plan, and they are always thinking on multiple horizons when they assemble a team.

Also, half the interview was softball questions about Stark's new book, and what it was like to write it.  Perhaps Matt wants to write one.

No way we keep deGrom in front of Wheeler imo. Zack is starting to look like he may in fact become an ace himself. Legit #1-2 type if he continues to improve his control. I would HATE to see Zack go!
