Mets will wear patch honoring Frank Cashen

The Mets will honor the life and legacy of Frank Cashen with a memorial patch featuring his initials.

Cashen, 88, passed away this past Monday.

He was the general manager of the Mets from 1980 to 1990, and also served as interim GM for a brief stint in 1998. He was responsible for putting together the 1986 World Series champions.

The patch will be displayed on the right sleeve of the team’s uniform below the Ralph Kiner patch. It will be worn on all jerseys for the remainder of the year starting this Friday at Citi Field. Also, prior to Friday’s game, the Mets will hold a moment of silence in Cashen’s memory.

I was just a little tyke during the Mets glory years. My father used to buy tickets from a guy at work that came with passes to (what I thought at time was the quite prestigious) Diamond Club.

On a couple of occasions we rode the elevator up with Mr. Cashen. I knew who he was from seeing his picture in the paper and thought how cool it was to be with the man who picked the players. That's how my dad described what a GM did. The first time I met him he asked who my favorite player was. I told him I couldn't pick a favorite between Strawberry, Gooden and Hernandez. He told me there's no reason I had to because I had my bases covered with a pitcher, infielder and outfielder.  I told him I liked Carter a lot too, but that he was my brother's favorite, so I didn't put him on my list.

I still remember his huge laugh and smile when I told him that I thought his bowtie made him look smart. He said, 'That's why I wear it, to fool 'em into thinking I know what I'm doing.'

A nice gesture, but better to honor Cashen by playing great baseball and winning.

The guy built a championship team with Fred Wilpon as a part owner, he should have a statue built.

Too bad no one will see it, as there soon aren't going to be any folks at either the ballpark or watching on TV the way this team is circling the drain.

@sandybgone Sadder still, that they passed on watching this franchise crumble before their eyes.  Especially Kiner...
