Mets will send Collins and Wright for Cubs game in Vegas

Terry Collins and David Wright will make the trip when the Mets travel to Las Vegas to play the Cubs in March (Rubin, Feb. 4).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

This is good news for fans in the stands, and probably a good faith move with respect to the Triple-A relationship, but I assume it’s a total nuisance for Wright and Collins. It’s Vegas, so it could be worse. At the very least, these guys get a night in Vegas, away from camp, as a way to break up the monotony of Spring Training. But, at the same time, there is work to do and I’m sure Collins and Wright would prefer to be in camp, hustling, focused on the larger task at hand. I don’t think we’ll even really know what others feel about the two-day, 5,000-mile trip…

Maybe they are happy to get out of PSL and hang out in Vegas for a few days. Regular ST can be a bore for players. And it's not like they aren't used to traveling as part of their job anyway. They'd probably prefer Vegas to having to take the bus to a regular ST road game.

Do you think they will take the over on Met wins in Vegas? Of course they won't, they know the deal.

Let's just hope that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas--especially if David or Terry feels the need for some 'Dominican food' and pulls a Duaner Sanchez. I'm serious. That bonehead incident had far-reaching consequences that jinxed the team for YEARS. Well, maybe TERRY can take that fateful taxi . . .

Can someone enlighten me....what is the point of this blog entry? Im not being sarcastic, I just have no clue what the relevance of this story is. Is the major league team playing the cubs in LV, and if they are, wouldn't Collins and Wright be there anyway...WTH am I not getting here??

David is happy to be an ambassador for the Mets and baseball wherever that may take him. Terry knows that this was his last chance to manage a team and he'd rather be going to Vegas than watching all season on TV. I doubt either of them look at this inconvenience as greater than the roles they have in life that have led to their being asked to represent the Mets. For guys like this, it's an honor.

Fred, Jeffy and Uncle Saul footing this bill for the trip. Things must be looking up in the money department.  HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah-tough duty. Major league manager and star player making a $gazillion flying 1st class to sunny Vegas to play in a kids game followed by a night on the strip.  Poor guys.

what would make things interesting is teams changing spring training locations ever so many years just trade one year with a team that trains in Arizona goes to Florida and visa versa so say the Mets go to a Arizona location to train and play in the Catcus league one year. it would be fun for baseball to switch things around for some teams.

This is good for the franchise and the connection to the Triple-A affiliate. There are a lot of guys at the Triple-A level this year who should be impact MLB players before the year is out. This should get fans excited and increase revenue, which is never a bad thing. I really doubt Wright will have his performance affected, and Collins is the manager- who cares? Besides, this could be a chance for Collins and Wright to get closer to the younger players on the team.

Oh, poor D. Wright.  He went for the sure money and decided winning was unimportant, so now he has to handle stupid ambassador duties.  Boo freaking hoo.

clearly the mets have some left over.  they offered Balfour a deal.  offer the deal to Drew .  one year 14 million.  he makes what he turned down and he starts at short.  he can go back into free agency as a ss instead of a utility player which is what he will be in Boston.

Having just declared Port Saint Lucie our legal residence-bought a beautiful place so close to the Mets ST facility, I walk to games- I hope they do NOT even get to the point where they contemplate a MOVE to AZ or Vegas for Spring Training in the future! Florida, East Coast, realizes that more competition is needed over here for Spring Training games. The DODGERS leaving VERO Beach/Dodgertown was a big blow to the local economy up there. JIM CRANE, owner of the ASTROS, has gotten as far as 'Palm Beach' recognizing the need, and finding a city owned 100 acre parcel of land to incorporate into a 2-Team ST facility.... this would be imperative to keep teams here for additional contract signing in years. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas---just don't have the Mets Spring Training stay there!

@yankeehater Just to highlight the fact that the entire 'A-team' will not be making the trip, but those guys will.  Might be useful info for people on the west coast who might want to go to the game to see David, or others who might consider timing a little vacation to work this in.

@Ron Davis The Yanks and NY Giants did just that I think in '51. The Giants had gone to Arizona with the Indians because segregation rules in Arizona were a lot less stringent than in Fla. Both teams had several Black big leaguers. The Dodgers created their own town in Florida to accommodate Robinson, Newcombe, and Campenella. In 51 the Jints came east to Saint Pete while the Yankees went to Phoenix. Threatened moves by other MLB teams to Arizona had forced some Florida jurisdictions to take enforcing the color line on players and families less seriously.

@metstastic  They probably are in coach, the last two seats in the rear next to the lavatory.
