Mets want Matt Harvey to slow down rehab

The Mets plan to postpone Matt Harvey‘s first attempt to throw off a mound to keep him from doing too much too soon, team sources said Thursday (Daily News, June 5).

“He’s fine,” the source said. “It’s nothing physical, it’s just a plan to be more cautious.”

Harvey had been planning to throw off a mound Monday, with Jeremy Hefner doing the same on Tuesday (NY Post, June 5).

Hefner underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 28, 2013, roughly two months before Harvey’s procedure.

Hefner and Harvey have both told reporters they would like to pitch for the Mets this season.

“That’s my goal,” Hefner said last month (ESPN, May 7). “That’s my hope. Hopefully I can come and contribute if there’s a need. I think I’d be wasting my time if I wasn’t trying to get back to the big leagues.”

Harvey recently told SI.com that he wants to make five to seven starts for the Mets this season.

Sandy Alderson has yet to publicly acknowledge if this is a realistic or attainable goal for either pitcher.

...harvey wants to play...thats good...but its also stupid...although i hate to say it it probably doesnt really matter...this year  its wait til next year....and we  probably will be saying the same for next year...after the cubs series my pessimism is in overdrive...its hard to love your team and hate the owners...

I don't blame the Mets for doing this..... It's a smart move

Harvey, we do not need you this year.  DO you really want to be 0-4 with a 1.12 ERA this year?  Just get better and wait until SA and Co. sign a bat next year.  Hefner is a full two months ahead of you.  Let him take the L's.

If you want ONE start just to get back in the action then that's one thing.  But, for the love of GOD, do not hurt yourself. This is some scary shiz how poorly the Mets FO is managing this kid.  Or if it's not that, and he really is this uncontrollable, it could be that the prognosticators are right - he wants to piss off the FO so much that they deal him out of Queens.

Why rush back to so many no decisions with these clowns?

who didn't see this coming back in October.... it's never easy w/ this team.

Hmmm.. the time off delays Harvey's service clock doesn't it?

Who wouldn't be in a hurry to pitch behind this murderer's row lineup? Harvey's behavior is exhausting. This has more to do with his massive, out of control ego than a desire to return to competition.  He HATES being out of the spotlight.   He's more than willing to embarrass himself in order to draw attention than any other athlete I've ever seen.  A more mature, disciplined athlete would listen to the medical experts and follow their direction.  Not him, he's going to do it his way.  I'd deal him first chance I got, he's on the fast track to crash and burn.

I think Harvey is just trying to stay in the spotlight. as great as he has been, he seems very interested in the celebrity side of things and being sidelined is killing his desired image. Making proclamations about how many starts he is going to make and when he is going to toss off a mound just get him back in the news. he could use a little superstar counseling from Derek Jeter

Or he's just a young, eager jock that wants to play ball. It is up to the adults to tell him to calm down and look at the big picture. So far the adults have done just that.

@Macacawitz

It looks like Harvey has put on some weight. He should be more concerned with his fitness program than pitching right now.

@Macacawitz I thank g-d you don't own the team.  The best pitcher in baseball is in Queens and you want to Dick Young the guy before we even get to enjoy him?  You, my friend... with all due respect.. are making a crazy statement.  I get that he rubs you the wrong way personally, but the idea is to win championships and be entertaining.  We have what could be the most boring team in all of MLB and next to the islanders and WNBA, the least entertaining sports product in NYC.

As a rule, Fred Wilpon & Sandy (not Jeff) do not like big championship personalities; they're turned off by it. The only way we'll get one is when it's by accident; like Harvey was.  By the time he unleashed the Dark Night Of Gotham character, it was too late for them to deal him.

NYC is SUCH a hard place to play and many athletes seem to hate the attention; don't we NEED some stars who want to embrace what NYC is?  This is the media capital of the world... Harvey is like Seinfeld's David Puddy and Apollo Creed all wrapped up in one package.   We need that guy.

@Macacawitz Couldn't agree more. Harvey is a bona fide petulant little boy. They would, I think, be afraid of backlash if they traded him. But I believe that he will bolt as soon as he can anyway. I know it's a stretch, but my dream would be a trade...Harvey for Giancarlo.

@Macacawitz his behavior is exhausting? I dont care if hes the biggest a$$hole in the world. As long as he pitches the way he did, he can pitch on my team anytime

@joe21 Joe, you have to explain Met fan's love affair with the man who could be the most boring NYC star in history if our own David Wright didn't exist.  Jeter's legend was built on the shoulders of Mariano Rivera, and George Steinbrenner's wallet.

I hate Derek Jeter (the player/ not the person).  I don't think I'm alone.  Beyond being over-hyped, he's dull and being celebrated for being boring.

I wouldn't kick him off my team, but give me Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth, Mantle, Mays, Seaver... those types.  I don't see ol' Fruit Basket winning any championships without his buddies, do you?

The Mets are losing and I'm still here, but this boring athlete fetish stuff is killing my enjoyment of the game.

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer  How do you know he can pitch?  The typical healing process from this injury is 12-18 months, maybe shortened because of better rehab and players being in better shape, but cutting it to 10, maybe less?  That's just a risk not worth taking for games that will be meaningless.

joe21
joe21

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer  you are right, if he can pitch, why not, but no one knows if he CAN pitch yet, so speculating this early is meaningless

DON'T BE SLOPPY

@openmind6 Harvey said he's going to play about 10lbs heavier then he did in the past. He said at a lower body fat percentage it took him longer to recover from soreness.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@qualcomm @Macacawitz No one's rooting against Harvey, but I get the sense you have this idealized notion about him that may not be true.  He doesn't have a champions personality, he's actually a mass of insecurity.  Jeter has a championship personality, Jeter would never say or do some of the idiotic things that Harvey has, and Harvey's only been around for a year.  The kid's got to grow up.  David Puddy and Apollo Creed are fictional characters, I'm beginning to believe that Harvey is nothing more than a parody at this point too.

Steven Molello
Steven Molello

@qualcomm @Macacawitz Qualcomm you're missing the point. We all need and like Harvey we just don't want him coming back to soon from Tommy John surgery and have his arm fall off. If he comes back this year and wins 5 games, who the hell cares? We need him for the future, not 2014..

qualcomm

@Ed Renner You want to FACE Harvey over and over every year? lol Yes, I think he'll bolt too, but only because he's not appreciated here.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@Nick Catino @Macacawitz He has a 12-10 record in the major leagues.  This Tanaka kid the Yankees have is 9-1 pitching for a lousy team.  Hasn't said word one, even if he could speak English.

Steven Molello
Steven Molello

@qualcomm @joe21 This could be the worst post I've ever seen on this sight. We want to win games, not be on Entertainment tonight. Derek Jeter overhyped? You're nuts. I hate the Yankees, but guy get a brain.

If enjoying the game is about guys in the newspaper and not wins and losses, you've lost your perspective.

qualcomm
qualcomm

@Macacawitz No, I don't think you're rooting for him to fail and I do have a realistic vision of what he is.  He's brash and often misguided... like Reggie Jackson, Joe Namath and tons of other larger than life personalities. I just happen to enjoy those characters.

As far as a championship personality, in my life time (40 years) and before me... teams with Matt Harvey types not only won titles, but are remembered.  Nobody remembers the Phillies of the 70's before McGraw, but the Big Red machine and Bronx Zoo are legendary. The late 90's Yankees were all about O'Neill throwing tantrums, Darryl Strawberry, David Wells etc..   the moment the personalities left, so did the titles.

Jeter wouldn't do what Harvey did because he's dull.  Dull people don't do all that much by nature.

Apollo Creed is a dramatization of Cassius Clay -- We all know a David Puddy.  I think you're over blowing it because you don't like the guy.

Ed Renner
Ed Renner

@qualcomm @Ed Renner

The guy is not God. We would face him what, maybe twice a year...maybe three times? Yes, I would face him those times. Especially if I can get a major bat.

@Macacawitz What does record have to do with it? Seaver one 16 games in 67-68 while being allowed to pitch complete games. The team is terrible.

You'd rather have an ace who had his power to communicate removed?  Let's just have a team of robots on the field.

@Macacawitz @joe21  you are correct, but Dennis Rodman did travel to the worlds most oppressive society to snuggle with a gruesome dictator....TWICE.

qualcomm

@Steven Molello As far as Jeter; you've GOT to be kidding.  He's a good All Star player but he's made out like he's been a clean up hitter, batting champ, gold glove for 20 years.

qualcomm
qualcomm

@Steven Molello @qualcomm @joe21 Steven, the Mets are a TV show. You need both.  Having the best pitcher in baseball helps winning and him doing goofy radio spots with Dan Patrick has zero impact on wins and losses. Actually, it has a positive impact because we get national attention which makes Fred money and it comes back into the roster (sometimes)

Anyone saying they want him off the team is saying they want to win less.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@qualcomm That's not true.  With the right psychotropic medication and with a psychiatrist added to the training staff, I feel he can enjoy a successful major league career.

qualcomm

@Ed Renner He's not god, but he's the best pitcher in baseball. If he's healed, I'd trade him for Mike Trout.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@qualcomm @Macacawitz I like edgy, I like cool, I have no problem with free spirits, I just don't like stupid.  If a player for my team embarrasses himself, he embarrasses me. The Qualcomm fiasco was stupid, not listening to the doctors is stupid.  He can says whatever he wants, that's his right, just don't be stupid.

joe21
joe21

@qualcomm @Macacawitz  if you had an Ace who didn't make a proper fool out of himself every time he communicated, you might have a point, but Harvey has demonstrated an uncanny knack for making an ass of himself....just ask Dan Patrick. I see him everyday at Starbucks and couldn't resist asking him about the Harvey interview and he said most bizarre behavior he has ever encountered, athlete or otherwise.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@Nick Catino @Macacawitz Yankees can't hit either, and their bullpen - with the exception of Betances - has been awful, he's still 9-1.  If Rivera hadn't retired that kid could win 30 games.

Macacawitz

@joe21 @Macacawitz If Harvey spent the weekend with Kim Jong-un I'd be impressed.   Especially if he brought home one of those flame throwers they use for executions.

@Macacawitz Can we hire that guy for ownership first?  Actually, knowing the team... he'd be from Kansas City and not know what he's doing.

@Macacawitz What didn't he do that a doc told him to do?  If you get turned off by embarrassing things, this is not the organization for you. I like championships, so really I guess I have no idea why I'm here too.

Psychology is fascinating isn't it?

qualcomm

@joe21The Dan Patrick thing was hilarious.  It was awkward, but who cares?  It's Dan Patrick... nobody cares about that guy or his stupid show and terrible radio network.  I bet I have more fingers than Patrick has listeners in NYC. Harvey's been great to Met fans and hasn't done that to any NYC media venues.

He's a real life David Puddy... it's entertaining.

Macacawitz

@qualcomm @Macacawitz  Yes it is.  Guess we're all masochists.  Given the normal recuperation period for Tommy John surgery, he shouldn't be pitching this year.  We were told he would miss the season.  Once again he's forced the Mets hand to the point where they have to make a public statement by telling him to slow down.  Yes, we're drawing conclusions with respect to what the doctors are telling him, but my educated guess is that he's rushing it.  The Mets are not going to be in a pennant race this year.  Those 5 to 7 starts will be during "garbage time".  From this it's easy to draw conclusions with respect to what's motivating him.

@Macacawitz haha The two of us and anyone on here are tools.  We spend so much time debating moves on a team that does the opposite of what any of us want and couldn't care less about us.  We provide hits and free press to an ownership we all want out.  Cheers to all that!

I think a start or two would ease everyone's mind, but not if he's going to pull a Johan.  None of us know where he is or how he's taking to rehab. Let's just enjoy the ride.
