Mets ‘unlikely’ to make deal, says Alderson

Sandy Alderson said it’s “unlikely” the Mets make a trade soon (Rubin, July 28).

“To make a guess, I wuold say that nothing will happen,” the GM said (DiComo, July 28).

The Mets have reportedly been shopping Bartolo Colon and Daniel Murphy, while also looking to acquire an outfield bat or shortstop upgrade.

New York has reportedly seen little interest in Colon, who could be dealt during August, even though he would have to pass through waivers (MetsBlog, July 24). The team is even willing to contribute to some of the $2 million he is owed the rest of the season (MetsBlog, July 25).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

This doesn’t surprise me. He manages expectations incredibly well — maybe too well, actually.

To refresh your memory, he also said it was unlikely he would trade Carlos Beltran, unlikely he’d trade RA Dickey and unlikely he’d release Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo and Jason Bay. I’m not saying he is likely to make a deal this week, because I actually don’t think he will, based on what I’m learning about the market place. I just think you should take what he says with a grain of salt.

I can't imagine getting a guy like Tulo is going to work out for the Mets.  The only way it could is if Tulo finds a way to stay off the DL and the prospects traded have inflated ERA's and yadda because of where they are playing.  I don't think that Tulo will change this team.

As long as Sandy and Terry are in the Mets organization, the team will still be a loser.  It's time for them to go.  The sooner the better.

The team IS playing better, and they are loaded with young pitching, but i still think he is a pompous jerk.

Patience everyone,.  This is a process and it takes time.  A LOT of time.  By 2017 its looking like "we" might just be a piece or 2 away from being very close to being another piece away from getting close to contention.

Colon will go after tonight's performance,..

And,

Depending on how you feel about him,...

Murphy is going too after his performance tonight,..

...Wilmer will take over second.

Love DM,...better get something GREAT for him.

They are both gone though. Put it in the book.

Sandy never tips his hand and anything he ever says can be taken seriously.

If you cant find a team to take Colon, or any of our pitching prospects you shouldn't have a job. This could be him just blowing smoke, but if no deal is made he might as well hand in his resignation. We're not a playoff team, our offense needs improvements. Major ones.

You morons don't realize that blockbusters generally happen in the offseason. I dont wanna get fleeced. Sandy spins brilliant trades

Seems like Sandy has a very long timeline. 2 more years at least until we are serious contenders., but the string along and promotions will continue.

I think Alderson has done a good job on the whole, likely operating within budget constraints that we're probably not fully aware of. I liked the Beltran trade, the Dickey trade, the Byrd trade. Trading Pagan, not so much. I liked signing Wright and Niese long term. His decision to hold on to Duda rather than Davis certainly looks good right now. Granderson and Colon were good signings. I was never thrilled with getting CY. Really,  the main thing I'd fault him on is not trading Reyes if he knew he wasn't going to sign him. We're in good shape  for the future and I'm glad he won't rush into any deal until he feels it's the right one.

Sandy and the wilpons will not do anything because there revenue is down.  Thats why the wilpons hired Sandy because thats his mentality.  Also, with the money he spent on the players last winter shows he has a poor selection choice.  He thinks he's still in the 90's.  The game has changed and is passing sandy & the mets behind in the dust.  get with the times man.

So happy SA is doing everything possible to improve the roster.  Hate this guy.

and so it continues... I don't think we can make a deal now, probably better options during the off season,,,flash to winter meetings,,,i don't think we can make a deal now, probably better options at the trade deadline especially if we are in it....flash to trade deadline.....not sure if we are in it or not, I don't think we can make a trade now, in the offseason we can get some things done.  OVER AND OVER AND OVER for 4 years now, I am really tired of hearing this, it just makes me feel continually led on. Something really needs to get done before next season, I am done with this Sandy tango.

Let SA do his thing. I feel things are coming along nicely. I can see Colon traded or maybe some other smaller type move but anything big will likely happen in the off season. I like how we have a stockpile of good arms. We will need most of them but eventually some will have to be trade bait. Maybe Syndergard, Montero and Gee for that proven power bat. If Duda can keep it up, he solves one issue and then we can either look for a potent SS or LFer.

You can use the Sandy quote: "To make a guess, I would say nothing will happen" to describe his effort to improve the team in 2015 as well. He seems to pride himself in doing nothing.

If you trade BART you better get a decent OF or SS in return. .since he pitches so well in Seattle they should trade him to the Mariners for their SS Franklin . .just a thought.   I like Dbacks SS's but not for giving up young prospects

Mets need to keep MURPH he is a solid lefty stick in their lineup.  I wish EY Jr. was in the lineup more as his speed can jump start the offense. They need to get Campbell in there somewhere and maybe platoon with Duda until he becomes comfortable against Lefties. .  Tejada has had a nice season fielding and he has shown glimpses of some hitting but he is an extra out in the lineup. . he doesn't move runners over with Sac fly or bunt . . that's what they had pitchers batting 8th.

By 2017 Harvey will be in the middle of his arbitration years and be trade bait for those missing pieces, which will be ready for the majors in 2019. (The same year Harvey is the World Series MVP for the Yankees or Dodgers)

@Max Denby  I swear I've posted this three times in the last two days.  How much do you hate Wheeler?  And Dilson Herrera?  And Brandon Nimmo?  And Travis d'Arnaud?  And Thor? And Vic Black?

Thought so.

His "sit on his hands"approach is his favorite option.Would it hurt to at least make an offensive deal or two to bring in a decent bat to MAYBE help us this year possibly contend?

I,like some others am not asking for a tulo type guy right now,Its most likely very unrealistic at this point. But,there has to be a few decent bats out there at the deadline that we wouldnt have to sell the whole farm for.

Or,who knows, maybe standing pat is just what we should do.This offense definetely needs another guy or two who can drive in at least half of the guys we leave in scoring position every game though,if we expect to end this season on a high note going in to 2015.

@jsecurity  Of course it does.  The only reason not to trade him is to placate irrational fans who like him because "he tries really hard' or because he 'leads the league in hits'.

@Kevin VanTassell Haa!!  People love us on this blog, Kevin!  No doubt!  The thing is I'm only half kidding when I make these comments.  The Mets have been a joke the majority of my life.   I was too young in 86 to be hanging onto that season.

I have no reason to expect anything different.  Especially when I can recognize history repeating itself, and the same complete bs coming from the front office.

This is a huge market team.  Playing in the greatest city in the US, filled with true baseball enthusiast and I'm supposed to buy into this wait and see, things take time, bs approach?

How is it Billy Beane keeps putting a winning product on the field?  I'm not a mlb GM but I suspect its because Beane has surrounded himself with smart baseball people and he makes smart decisions.

Idk,...but,...will likely be a SS and a prospect or 2,...it will be another coup for SA...

jsecurity

Disagree. Not saying Murph is great 2nd baseman but on a team with little hitting that is looking for hitting I would be reluctant to get rid of someone who can approach 200 hits consistently. That being said it's going to cost money to keep him and trade for two other decent hitters. That remains to be seen.

benmoz
benmoz

@jamets @jsecurity Trade him 1 for 1 for one of those SS prospects from Arizona or Seattle (or with a bit more for one of the Cubs SS) and trade for Cargo.

Put Flores at 2B until Herrera is ready.

jsecurity
jsecurity

Right. 4th highest BA in MLB for 2B. .975 fielding%. Trade a bat because he's on a team loaded with hitting. Irrational to me.

jenkins

@jamets I was open to Franklin until I saw him in the AS game. Really bad looking swings.

@Mushroombarleysoup So what happens if you're wrong...do we just forget about your supposed bold prediction? I mean let's face it you went so far out on that ledge why come back now? Just tell us who we are getting in return so we can sleep better knowing the trade fairy I'd coming to bring us good tidings of great joy....Jerk

jamets
jamets

@jsecurity That's really the point.  I don't think you can spend $40-50 million to resign Murphy.   I would rather get a couple of prospects for him now - maybe we find our future SS or RF.  Then spend that money somewhere else.

Kevin VanTassell
Kevin VanTassell

Murphy is about to make $$$$$$, Flores in 2015, and Herrera in 2016+ will be much cheaper.

benmoz
benmoz

@jsecurity Yeah don't cite his .975 fielding percentage when we still see him making game losing errors in the field (just this past series for example)

jamets
jamets

@jsecurity You just proved my point about Murphy supporters by citing his batting average and fielding %. I used hits as my example, but yours are just as good.

jamets
jamets

@jenkins @jamets He is Seattle's version of Flores.  He's killing it in AAA again this year but hasn't shown anything in the majors.  His track record is just too good though - eventually he will hit and he could still be a star.  And unlike Flores, I think his D is good enough to handle SS in the short term, and undoubtedly good enough to play 2B.  Definitely worth the gamble if we could get him for Colon.

Mushroombarleysoup
Mushroombarleysoup

It stands to reason that SA wants nothing of Colons salary next year, and he would struggle greatly to deal him in off-season as his value is at its highest here and now.

Murph, on the other hand, would absolutely go for the right deal(though I don't want him to) but I could see this playing out into the off-season.

Sorry if I farted in your Colon jersey,...

jsecurity
jsecurity

Not sure I am a Murphy supporter. My point is it's not 'because he tries hard'. It is that he is an ok 2nd baseman and I don't believe you trade 200 hits at 2B and not have an upgrade ready to step in, when we need production from LF and SS.

jenkins
jenkins

@jamets @jenkins I mean, he was missing breaking balls inside by like 18." Then I thought maybe he can just bat righty, but he's 6-39 on that side, 0-8 Lefty. Not worried about his D, but man-that swing ..
