Ruben Tejada 1 (Baron)

Mets underwhelmed with Ruben Tejada… again

The Mets are again underwhelmed with Ruben Tejada‘s conditioning, despite him attending an offseason health and fitness program with other teammates (NY Post, Feb. 25).

“He looks pretty much the same,” a Mets source told the Post’s Kevin Kernan.

According to multiple reports last Spring, Tejada arrived to camp out of shape, which was followed by a below-average season and injury.

“We’re always looking to improve,” Sandy Alderson said in January (NY Post, Jan. 24), regarding his roster. However, he added, “We will be happy going into spring training with Ruben penciled in as being our starting shortstop.”

That said, the Mets continue to be connected in rumors to Mariners SS Nick Franklin and free-agent SS Stephen Drew.

He showed up out of shape....again and they didn't go right out and find a replacement?

This is the definition of a losing organization.

The Mets will always be second rate with Wilpon as owner and Alderson as GM. I don't see how it can be seen anyway else

Play Wright at SS Murphy at 3B and EY at 2B

If i have to give up pitching to get franklin then no dice!  Pitching is what we have. its the only thing that makes us special. i do not want to give up a future arm that will come bite us in the ass later. i would sign drew to a two year deal. you already know the yankees are going to pick up the best shortstop thats available. So we have to look at the second or third.. dont forget we are the mets. not many players want to come here. i will take drew if it dont work out with him then we trade him sign us a short stop next year. Franklin sounds great but i dont want to give up any pitcher. pitching wins championships!!

For a guy who has accomplished nothing in his professional career this takes some balls. To come into camp out of shape again, after a bad year is disrespectful. Take some pride in your job and your craft because there are millions of people who would love to have that job.

He needs to be cut. The kid is a clown.

Then ask Marty McFly to take you back a couple years and re-sign Jose Reyes!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is an anonymous source needed to reveal that Tejada came into camp looking the same? Aren't there reporters down there with, you know, eyes?

Either way, is an in-shape Tejada really this team's answer at short?...it seems the powers that be on this team are trying to crucify the guy and place the onus on him rather than admit that perhaps they've been wrong in evaluating his talent level.

"He looks pretty much the same."  Well, another nutrition and conditioning camp proves to be all about nothing.  I hate to say I told you so, but....I TOLD YOU SO!

No, actually I liked to say that.

There's a freaking surprise. Tejada's showed up in camp out of shape. AGAIN. After TWO stints in fat camp this offseason.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, guys like Tejada need to work 2x as hard as the next guy to stick it in the majors, and he's never shown the commitment to do that. Anyone who says Stephen Drew would not be a VAST upgrade over Tejada is overrating Ruben in the extreme.

@SNYtv Mets know the player Tejada is & Ike also. They`re not fooling true fans. Did They think they`re gonna turn into Ripken& Pujols?

Wasn't the program only 2 weeks long? Anyone who works out knows that that amount of time is going to do nothing if you're not being disciplined the rest of the offseason.

Last year Tejada hit a home run in his first spring game...not much after that. We need defense at ss. Saying that would dismiss Flores from the solution, and I've never seen Franklin play. It's time to stop dicking around and make a decision about Drew.

How can you go to a fitness camp for weeks and still be out of shape? It makes no sense at all, The whole purpose of being there is to get in shape by working out everyday with professional personal trainers who also teach you about proper nutrition. It's not like Tejada was 50 pounds overweight, he just needed to lose that baby fat and tone his core a bit. Now this doesn't necessarily make Tejada a better SS as far as hitting and fielding goes, but it certainly can't hurt. This article is either entirely bogus or Ruben Tejada's days are certainly numbered as a NY Met. And if the Mets really are disappointed and losing patience with him, they better get Stephen Drew or Nick Franklin as soon as humanly possible. Either one would be a nice upgrade over Tejada and make us a better ballclub. I've been on the Stephen Drew bandwagon for weeks anyway and nothing has changed my mind about that...and we don't need to give up any players to get him...

I really don't want to see Flores be traded but I'm sure if we don't wanna give Vic black up it's gunna take degrom or Walters and Wilmer Flores possibly to get him

There's nothing we can do. There's nobody out there. The mets should just take the season off. Just not show up and play just come back strong in 2015

@metsblog At this point just cut ties and move on. The front office making these statements dont help Drew negotiations anyway.

I want Franklin but I don;t know about trading Montero for him. Keep pressing Flores.

Chill people if it was a credible source they wouldnt have made him a"source" his name woulda been out there. Tejada has potential but I too would like to have franklin. Do I think tejada is ok? Let's see how he does in a couple spring games or let's pick up franklin and put tejada on the bench idc something has gotta give though

This is such a hack job by the Post.  Every other article about Ruben has been to the contrary.  Are the Mets looking to upgrade at SS?  Yes.  Are they looking to upgrade because Ruben is not in better shape?  Doubtful.  This is not about the shape that he is in. It is about finding a better and more competent major league SS.  Yesterday they go after Davis.  Today they go after Tejada.  It's a hack job.

go and Get nick franklin! Enough of tejada and his bad attitude

So the guy went to THEIR fat camp and did the entire program with no incidents? Then he doesn't look any different? Sounds like YOUR fat camp might suck Sandy.

Or maybe this comment came from the "unnamed source" that said Justin Turner didn't hustle?

I've never seen a business go so far out of their way to devalue the products they are trying to sell (to us or some other team).

billennium

Until someone other than "a source" comments on this, I am not that worried. "A source" could be a ball boy, a groundskeeper or an equipment manager. Why don't we wait until he plays a game or two before we try and jump all over him?

Michael Egan

Just sign drew already. He can't be worse than tejada.

Give the SS job to Flores and be done with it.

How's his hitting/fielding? Isn't that more important than how he looks?

Clearly the "source" is Scott Boras. Terry seems pleased and that's enough for me.

Tejada is just a waste of time. He is clearly not interested in playing baseball. He needs to be released which I can see happening if the Mets sign Drew or trade for Franklin.

zoddie

Then trade for Franklin. Of course, if this only is the Post saying this...

Matt, what do you think? This is one of the benefits of having you down there. Is he a lard ass?

What a shocker. Might as well just give Drew a two-year deal and be done with it!

@steve333  so you don't think it's possible that Alderson could do a good job if he had the spending ability of the Yankees or Dodgers?  It's pretty clear that he's been hamstrung by the Wilpons lack of cash flow.I agree that the Wilpons need to go, but Alderson has done ok with what he's been given to spend. Marlon Byrd is a perfect example of that.

Mario Caraballo
Mario Caraballo

@Chris Kujawa  has wright played shortstop? you think you can just pick up a position and be good at it in a month? wright is the start of the franchise and a third baseman. so bad idea.

@nymess Actually, they were right about evaluating his talent level.  They just simply ignored it.

Starz31
Starz31

@Eddie_Dean  What's weird is they didn't say he showed up out of shape this year. They're trying to insinuate that he did based on the quote that he looks similar to last year, in which he did show up out of shape.

It's an odd public criticism pointed at him.

zoddie
zoddie

@Kurt Carson The initial program, which was voluntary and paid partially by the players, was 4 weeks long.  Then Tejada decided to go back a SECOND time for another few weeks later in the winter.

I'd like some confirmation in addition to an "unnamed source" and the NY Post.  Those two sources aren't exactly reputable.

anymos
anymos

@fast_eddie I wouldn't get bent out of shape about a comment made by one 'unnamed' source who said 'he pretty much looks the same.'  If Terry or Sandy said he came into camp out of shape again- that's one thing.  This is just garbage reporting.

zoddie
zoddie

@billennium Or Matt Cerrone can report back with what HE sees.  That should be the great thing about him being down there - we don't have to reply on an "unnamed source" reported by the NY friggin' POST.

billennium
billennium

If your reasoning for signing Drew is that "he can't be worse than Tejada," then I don't want him. The Mets, or any other team, would have signed Drew if they thought he was significantly better than what they had. The current cost of a potentially slight upgrade is about $13.5M.

Christopher Masiello
Christopher Masiello

@nwmets No way! If performance counted more than looks than they would sign a fat old dude who can pitch like crazy. Oh wait....

Robert Morrow Kirilloff

Wright has played shortstop for the mets a few games but I still agree with you that he needs to stay at third. I would like to see EY or Murph get some reps at SS though just to see.
