Mets refute report that says they re-signed Dice-K

Mets officials said there is no truth to a report in Japan (Newman, Jan. 14) indicating they’re close to re-signing RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (Rubin, Jan. 14).

That said, re-acquiring Dice-K this off-season is “still a possibility,” according to a source (Martino, Jan. 14).

In an effort to a sign someone to a minor-league deal to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation, the Mets have been reportedly linked to Bruce Chen, John LannanPaul Maholm (Heyman, Dec. 10), Freddy Garcia (Puma, Dec. 10) and Johan Santana (Lennon, Dec. 10).

Dice-K went 3-3 with a 4.42 ERA and 1.241 WHIP with the Mets in seven starts to close out 2013. He was 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA with a 0.8355 WHIP in his last four starts of 2013.

Honestly, who cares? These will all be guys signed to minor league deals. Anyway that agrees to a minor league deal.. Sign them up!

Freddy Garcia?!? Was Galen Cisco unavailable? Real hard to get excited about ANY of these options. Does anybody really want to see Daisuke, Chen, Harang or even Santana in 2014. Maholm is an interesting choice. But that's another one whose best years are long behind him. Make it a legitimate open competition in Spring Training and see who impresses. I honestly don't mind third or fourth place if there is hope on the horizon. Or see what Mejia can do and keep Carlos Torres as a swing man.

The current rotation is Colon / Niese / Gee / Wheeler / x.

X should be Jennry Mejia.

Since Mejia has had recurrent injuries, we need someone not too expensive to be there just in case.  Dice-K showed improvement in Sept. and is further removed from his past injuries.  I think he's as good as anyone else out there.  The questions:

will he be as cheap as we need him to be?

and can he be an effective reliever if starters are healthy?

What is the point of refuting the report?  Can someone tell me?  If it is not true, who cares, do people believe every rumor and what harm does it do?  Please someone enlighten me because I am clearly missing why they bother to refute it.

if he is the stop gap before Montero and Syndergaard fine. those two will come up post June . Dice K can keep the 5th slot warm enough. as long as he does not get too much money . I am fine.

Why not? He closed out the season very well. He won't go to waste.

sometimes you gotta roll the dice, k?

Look I don't really wanna invest 3 hrs for 5 innings every 5 days. Can we get someone else

I don't mind Dice-K coming back, although it would require signing 17 guys for the bullpen to finish his 3 inning starts

cool...once he got past that horrid first few starts (and I do mean horrid), he was actually pretty darn good..

Bring him back on a minor league deal. If he does not cut it he can be released. We all know DeGrom, Montero and Syndergaard will start the season in Vegas. However, I'm rooting for Mejia to win the 5th spot in the rotation. Last year even with an injured elbow he finally showed what he can do.

I would rather bring up OUR pitchers after and AA start them regularly. The Cardinals sure did that AGAIN last year and won a World Championship because of it. Do not sign anymore crap like you have for the last 3 years with terrible results

No harm, no foul. If it means that Mejia and others get more of a chance to simmer and season in the minors then its a win. He'd only be a placeholder for 10-15 starts as it is

i rather have Maholm then John Lannan  then Johan if healthy then Dice K. I do not want Garcia at all been down that and the Bruce Chen road before as well.

Once he got some innings under his belt, he pitched pretty well. He hadn't pitched in a while when they threw him into the rotation, but if you recall after his first few starts, he was good. No reason not to bring guys like him in. This team has a chance to have some good pitching depth this season.

Denise Mulé

I don't know if I can take another season of him pitching!! He certainly wasn't all that impressive last season when he would pitch and it took forever to get out of one inning.

so while the real teams are going after Tanaka, the Mets are bottom feeding as usual

He looked like Dice Koufax in his last few starts. If he was willing to sign a minor league deal, why the heck not?

We do need another starter. Relying on Mejia and degrom is an iffy proposition....we definitely need one more guy with some experience. And yes, one or more of our starters WILL be hurt before syndergaard is ready to save the day in July. Relying on Mejia as ur 5th with degrom in the wings is a stupid move.

Just a thought...could dice K be used as a middle reliever if he doesn't make the team out of camp? I don't see why not

Mike Dell Italia

@Kenneth Meltsner on minor league deals why not? but i do hope mejia is the 5th starter instead of one of these guys. But you do want depth for sure.

I don't want see Torres start at all, he was so effective in the pen, leave him there all year we need him.

nymetsrule

@Maury FeldmanHe doesn't pitch deep into games, and it takes him 6 hours to get through 4 innings. Please, just let Matsuzaka go.

BringBackDaveTelghe

@Maury Feldman For what it's worth, Dice K has a first inning era over his career of 5.78, he's a very bad option to transition to the pen.  He's also not a very good 5th man, hasn't been relevant in years and crushes the pen the majority of the time he's out there.  Considering we have so many short options in the rotation, I'd much rather a Paul Malholm type who can get hot for a month at a time when he's going well and can give some serious innings.

@Howie Avery - You are overthinking it buddy.   They get asked questions, and gave an answer.

The fact that it makes this site as a news story is the issue.

Basically Sandy said: "Maybe"   But that's the case for probably a dozen pitchers, starters and relievers, right now.

@Ron Davis Why not just give Montero and Syndergaard a chance to make the team in spring training?

@drmetfan Couldn't agree more.  I'm really hoping Mejia can get past the injury bug and lock up a spot in the rotation.  He ain't just a thrower anymore - the dude learned how to trust his other pitches.

@trevordunn On a minor league deal, how do you not try to sign Dice-K? Let's see, $1 million with another $1 or $2 million in incentives for Dice K! Forget Tanaka. Why spend all that money on an unproven (in the states) guy. Pitching is not our problem. We need another hitter or two.

stemog
stemog

@yankeehater I love getting the chance to watch the young guys try to win a spot. It costs next to nothing and they're fighting for their professional lives. Dice-K would be nice to throw into the mix, but if it were Mejia, DeGrom or Montero for the fifth spot, so be it. Most of you say we're going nowhere anyway, so why not see what they've got?

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

Who cares what he looked like in a couple of meaningless games? He hadn't been relevant in years and the best case scenario has him going 5 innings and crushing the pen each time.

xgamblorx
xgamblorx

@G.T.O He has one relief appearance in his American career and that was 1 IP in an extra inning game in 2011. If he did sign with the Mets and didn't have an end-of-ST opt-out clause, he'd be best served pitching in AAA and being ready in case of injury.

stemog
stemog

@G.T.O I don't think so He's one of those guys that takes an inning or two to get going. After that, he's usually pretty good.

chasesimms

@G.T.O Absolutely not.  Asian ballplayers make horrible middle relievers.

mets2014
mets2014

@Hodges14@Ron Davis it's a player control issue...since neither are on the 40 man roster they will not be called up before june...that would allow the mets an extra year of controlling them...that being said deGrom is already on the 40 man roster, so he could be involved in the competition for that 5th rotation spot

@stemog@chasesimms@G.T.O  Haaaa!! No kidding there are no records.  It was such a nonsensical comment, I assumed it would be obvious that it was a joke.
