Mets to send scouts to see Joel Hanrahan

The Mets will have scouts watching free-agent RHP Joel Hanrahan at a showcase in Texas on Friday, Sandy Alderson told a group of season ticket holders on Thursday.

Hanrahan, 32, went 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA in only nine games for the Red Sox in 2013.

He had season-ending surgery last May to repair a torn flexor tendon muscle in his right arm.

Hanrahan saved 76 games for the Pirates between 2011 and 2012, allowing just 96 hits, 52 walks and nine home runs in 128 innings.

Hanrahan could have a lot of upside. Before his injury, he was still throwing very hard and he was dominant in his two seasons in Pittsburgh before being dealt to Boston last winter. He’s a hard thrower with two pitches – a fastball and slider – that fit the profile of a closer. He often struggles with his command, but he typically misses a lot of bats and keeps the ball in the yard. If he hasn’t lost too much velocity, he should be able to return to form when he’s 100 percent healthy.

Love Hanrahan.  If he can still bring it, I'd definitely sign him.

With those numbers he should fit right in. Seriously, stop shopping at the Distressed Merchandise counter.

The discount bin is still where we make our bones. When will the WilMarts grab Drew and Cruz, even Arroyo!

The Mets bullpen has some upside unlike last year. Parnell & Black are good and will most likely improve from last year. The rest of the bullpen can be pulled from Familia, Germen, Torres, Leatherstich, Rice, Edgin, Farnsworth, Lannan, etc. We just need to sign one more legitimate reliever such as Joel H and we'll be set. We have some other arms in the Minors we can try out and maybe Sandy will find a steal like Reid.

This could be a good addition.

I think this would be a good fit...not confident though that Mets brass will have the same opinion...he will be on the Royals next season

Too bad Mo had a Cutter, oitherwise he'd fit the profile of a closer.

The mets still have season ticket holders? Those meetings have to be getting pretty empty. Heard last one was at a Dunkin Donuts

@Hey_its_Don @bigmetsfan123  Was he not one of  the best closer two seasons ago? So he got injured, Matt Harvey got "Severely injured" and could come back and suck, but does that make him not a major league pitcher? The logic, it does not exist.

@bigmetsfan123 no he was severely injured and had a 10 era in a few appearances. He's also not ready to pitch.

@metsonmymind @bigmetsfan123  We had outbid the Rays FOR BALFOUR. He wanted to pitch down south and be close to home. We had the money on the table and offered more. We did all we could, why overpay for a relief pitcher? Seriously? There is no logic in that

@metsonmymind @bigmetsfan123  What is this "pathetic excuse" of a bullpen? Who is bad in our bullpen? We have a spectacular closer who can throw 100 mph past you 3 times before you take a breath. We have Vic Black who is also a young firearm to set up for Parnell. We have two solid lefties who overall do well in the situations they are put in for with Rice and Edgin. Ryan Reid could be a steal who is also young and has a good power arm. Not to mention guys like Germen, Familia, Farnsworth has experience and can be a veteran presence. So tell me, how is this a pathetic excuse? This could be a very solid bullpen.

@bigmetsfan123 Rice got hurt and Hawkins is one of those rare good finds, the bullpen will remain bottom 3 in the majors if we keep this up

@bigmetsfan123 he averages nearly a strikeout per inning and is coming off of two solid seasons, 2/14 is a drop in the bucket

@bigmetsfan123 my point is, they are two different people, we can't live in fear and not sign someone for reasons like this
