Mets to add Andrew Brown to the roster this weekend

The Mets will add OF Andrew Brown to the roster in time for Friday’s game against the Braves, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Brown is hitting .367 with a 1.062 OPS, two homers and 27 RBIs in 98 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Brown is not on the 40-man roster.

The Mets have an open spot on the 40-man roster right now, so the Mets wouldn’t have to designate anyone for assignment for Brown. This is a logical guess, but it would make sense for the Mets to send the struggling Collin Cowgill to Triple-A for Brown. While Marlon Byrd is struggling, Cowgill is struggling more and Cowgill has an option to burn in 2013.

I would have expected them to use that 40-man roster spot for someone like Omar Quintanilla, as they currently don’t have a true backup shortstop on the roster. And, from what I saw of Brown during camp, his defense left a lot to be desired in the outfield. At the same time, I wonder if the Mets would consider using Brown at first base on occasion as well, especially against left-handed pitching since Ike Davis is hitting .138 with a .435 OPS against lefties so far this season…
