Ike Davis 6 (Baron)

Mets still open to trading Duda and Davis, at least 2 teams need a 1B

Sandy Alderson has started to reach out to teams that once showed interest in 1B Ike Davis, a source familiar with the discussions said (Rubin, Mar. 18).

He is also open to trading Lucas Duda, who has seen interest from at least one team in the American League (Rubin, Mar. 18).

In addition to Davis, Red Sox 1B Mike Carp, Phillies 1B John Mayberry and Nats 1B Tyler Moore are all likely available (Stark, Mar. 18).

The Pirates and Astros continue to show interest in acquiring a first baseman (Stark, Mar. 18).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Umm, at this point, I’d argue the Mets need a first baseman, too. I mean, I’d take back Carp in a second, given his ability to hit right-handed pitching as a compliment to Josh Satin. The same can be said for Duda, but not if he’s hurt and not if he’s traded. Man, what a mess… By the way, the Astros make a ton of sense for Duda, who projects as a DH down the road.

1:25 pm: The more I think about it, given that Davis must have very little value, I’m wondering if this is a sign the team is considering releasing him before the start of the year. Remember, if they do this, they’re only on the hook for $600,000 of his roughly $3.5 million salary.

If the Mets weren't so cheap, we wouldn't  move Flores 3 times a season. We should have gotten a SS and put Flores at 1B everyday. Anyone can see that except Sandy of course. Wasting a future Star at the plate. They are determined to ruin this kid.

What is the front office waiting for ??? Get rid of these 2 players who have had their chance and pick up Kendry Morales who is a proven guy before someone else does....

I'm all for trading Duda the dud,but I'd keep Ike this season, one last shot, sink or swim!

Seems to me most of you people forget how talented Ike is. Guy had a bad season, cut him some slack. He looked much improved when called back up last year. It was only the season before he hit 32 hrs. Let's see what he does these last 10 days before crucifying him. Cause if he is the guy he was before last year, the Mets have a much better lineup

Just send them both down to AAA Las Vegas and when they start hitting, trade them both while they have a little value. They have no business being on the Opening Day roster.

When is Jeff Wilpon and by extension MetsBlog going to do a James Dolan-like declaration that they know nothing about baseball?

Additionally,  Mets are open to Trading Lannan and Torres (and others) to teams seeking Starting Pitchers. They are ready to deal Tejada and Quintanilla to teams needing Starting Short Stops. Finally,  Kirk N. is on the blog for any team seeking a Starting Outfielder.

yes...this all makes sense!

I agree ... mets are not sending a 3.5M salary to AAA.

Well, at least Duda and Davis are just two in a bunch of awful first basemen being dangled out there.

Anyone know if the 7Line will be selling "FIRE SANDY" shirts this season?

I'm not the biggest Alderson fan but the lack of signing big free agents has nothing to do with him. The amount we were supposedly able to spend this off season decreased each month. Our owners are broke, we are no longer a big market team and the only thing sandy can really do is sign a bunch of flash in the pans. Sandy was recommended to the Wilpon's a few years back as a gm that can help rebuild a franchise. Our minor league system is so much better than a few years ago. Do I think Sandy has handled everything he's ever done the right way? absolutely not. However, if we are bitter about not signing big free agents then we are blaming the wrong person. Its not in his control.

The Pirates need a LH first baseman and have shown interest in Davis, they also have a strong bullpen with excess arms. They're shopping righty RP Vic Mazzaro who probably fits right into the Mets bullpen. Could be a possible trad.

Sandy is a CLOWN.

Why the media gives him a pass is a joke.

There is some degree of truth to the principle of "addition by subtraction" at this point with regard to the drama of the 1B situation, so dispose Davis for money and get something even if not much for Duda.  For 1B, use Satin and/or some other minor leaguer for the time being.  Duda and Davis isn't giving you much and months more of 1B drama is tiresome to contemplate.

Meanwhile, you still need a SS.

Sandy is a joke...has not constructed this team at all. Ownership probably held him back from dishing out more money...blah blah..true. The fact we are so dismal at 1b and ss and nothing being done is both laughable and frustrating.

The Mets are a soap opera, unfortunately. They need to figure 1B and SS...please!!!!!!!

Interesting there's no post about Justin Turner's negative comments about the Mets on the site today.

Personally, who cares what that clown has to say, but it still is interesting..

@Shawn M. Milburn  A bad season and a half out of 2. Cut him some slack. he cost us about 10 games in April, May, June each of the last 2 years. Don't cut him slack, cut him, save 3.7 million

Jerry Colfer

Good points. His play has been erratic since the freak infield injury. Even his 32 HR was sandwiched around a horrid first half of 2012 and a forgettable 2013. Duda has done nothing to replace him so get Ike major and minor AB's over the next 10 days. If he is good he plays, if not then it is time to move on.

@Shawn M. Milburn The guy he was before last year sucked too.  32 HRs in meaningless games does not make up for being an automatic out roughly half the season.

@gqinxs Yup....and NO ONE is looking for Davis. I'd take Carp from the Sox though.

@bcleveland So he's stealing an update of an update based on Rubin's actual reporting?  And why is everyone so angry on the internet?  Its a baseball blog, climb down off the ledge.

@bcleveland take it easy. One thing to plug another site on this one, another to call the guy a clown. The guy works hard and does a good job. You aren't forced to visit here and he didn't take your money.

@bcleveland  Actually Cerrone posts something as soon as Senior Unpaid and many times Uncredited Personally MetsBlog Correspondent Adam Rubin of ESPN New York posts something. This blog doesn't make news, isn't creative, has high-school level mongo analysis, is a conduit for Wilpon-ic thinking and has a lousy message board system.

There's just the little fact you're missing that Flores couldn't play SS in the minors. Playing in the pros will make Quintanilla look like Ozzie Smith.

@ponzies86 as much as I'd love to see Flores win the position, until he proves he can turn a routine double play with regularity and comfort there is no way he should be handed the position.

@vimets  as bad as Ike has been I believe he is worth more than  Vin Mazzaro. The guy was a pinata until last year

@tullydew  Sandy's around because he has a magic plan that guarantees sure victory two years from now.  Now of course, he's been peddling that magic plan since 1989 with no success, but that's because the magic plan always calls for success two years from now, not now.   The owners love him because he does such an exceptional job peddling his magic plan that rube fans always buy into it and wait patiently for the magic plan to kick in, which it hasn't for over a quarter of a century.  Sandy's magic plan always includes completely untouchable, sure fire prospects that will be the best players in baseball two years from now.  If Sandy had a time machine, the teams he runs would win every year.  The problem is that the magic plan has a proven track record in the future, never the present.  I think he needs to work on that.

@BringBackDaveTelghe  I care to the extent that Turner's absolutely correct. Whether Carlos Beltran being anonymously trashed for not attending a Veterans' hospital (when he was in Puerto Rico and had informed the organization he'd be there to launch his own charity), Ike Davis being anonymously trashed for "partying," R.A. Dickey being characterized as selfish after being traded, Turner being anonymously trashed for "not hustling," or Tejada being anonymously criticized, there is a disturbing trend of the Mets badmouthing their own players or former players behind their backs. It comes across as petty, pathetic, and spineless to me. If you don't like something players are doing (and some of the accusations don't even seem to have merit), handle it within your clubhouse, not behind their backs.

It's bad enough the Mets have the chutzpah to talk about winning 90 games, while not spending the money to address glaring needs like a shortstop, but it makes it even more frustrating when the franchise I love is trashing its own players.

What's wrong with him? Other than the fact that he has a huge hitch in his swing and couldn't hit a beach ball if it was placed on a tee right in front of him. Oh and his nice little .150 avg is sporting

@Macacawitz @Dr. James DiTuna @BringBackDaveTelghe  couldn't agree more with Turner. This Tejada bashing is absurd. He's the least of my worries. Our 'top prospect' catcher looks God awful. We have no first baseman, no 5th starter, bullpen, etc.
